Re: Ontario Runners Forum 2005
No headache for me...I was a good boy & went to bed around 9 PM last night. Minus 36C when I got up so I waited to go running. Started out at minus 30C and finished up an hour and a half later at minus 25C - 8.4 miles to start of the new year. Roads have very good traction at this temperature. It takes about 15 minutes of grumbling and gurgling (with a lot of spitting and coughing) before I feel comfortable, but then the gloves can come off and I can watch the frost build up on the hairs on the back of my hands without feeling cold in the fingers! From mile 6 onwards I had sweat dripping down my glasses & freezing on my chin. Right now it feels like whisker (thank goodness it's not whiskey) burn.

Anyone for ham and scallops tonight?

Re: Ontario Runners Forum 2005
Day off today. Only in second day of comeback from injury sideline..don't want to push it. Lamb and roast potatoes for supper...yum! I was good last night too, went to bed at 11pm and swore off alcohol after too much drinkin during Xmas. Woke up feeling refreshed.
Trifle later on with a fresh blob of cream..then I'll run tomorrow to give myself the false impression that I have absolved myself of my eating sins! LOL!

Re: Ontario Runners Forum 2005
I believe I'm going to boycott this one and keep posting on 2004...till Patti deletes it. :-)

Got a migraine last night from not rehydrating after the race and drinking martinis...new year...still dumb!!

Skied today at Caledon...5 cars in the lot when I got there at 10:15.... 25 cars by 2 pm.

Wine and cheeses and munchies at 3 PM...the world arrived.

On New Year's Day you might think people wouldn't need more wine and munchies. WRONG.

Gained 14 pounds since Christmas...bet 6 will be gone tomorrow, but it's not good. Might have to roll through Las Vegas...thank goodness it's downhill.

Eeek! Speaking of rolling jc I just realized that after so long on the sidelines and too much holiday food I gotta try and get into a bathing suit next week for my vacation!

Great job Patti! I knew I could rely on you!!

We're packing up to get on the road for our 10 hour drive home. I hate this drive. You'd think after being in Toronto for 19 years it would have gotten shorter!! We were up late last night, so we're getting a late start today. It's going to be a long day.

Re: Ontario Runners Forum 2005
Fourteen lbs in one week? That's almost 50,000 calories!!! What were you eating JC???

Second day of the year and my second run done. It was a short (50 min) recovery run on freshly plowed but slippery streets. My feet slipped so often I think I actually ran an extra mile!

Weather is supposed to clear but get colder. Oh goodie! I can hardly wait to run at minus 40!

Re: Ontario Runners Forum 2005
Good news tigger...the 14 is now about 9.5...phew. My weight fluctuates tremendously over any 24 hour period so it only makes sense to weigh myself at the same time each day.

500,000 calories...that's about 12 caramel macchiattos at Starbucks...which I don't even like very much.

My long run today got shortened by about 13 miles...just felt crappy...legs were dead from skiing, kinda sick to my stomach, remains of the migraine...we'll try again tomorrow. No way I was going to force it today.

Re: Ontario Runners Forum 2005
Happy New Year to all runners in Ontario. Thought you might enjoy a little race report from the mild West Coast...

12th Annual Vancouver New Year's Day Fat *** 50 Run and Freeze your *** Swim

For an Event Host to suggest that one years event was "better" than another is kind of like your Mom suggesting that one of her kids is "better" than another. However, things came together very well this year, so the 12th annual Vancouver New Years Day Fat *** 50 will go down in the records as extra special.

Weather on New Years day in Vancouver generally ranges from lousy to downright awful. Assuming you didn't spend too much time standing around at aid stations, the weather was just about perfect for a run this year. True, it was a bit misty at the start... some even spotted a flurry or 2 up in the deep woods of Pacific Spirit Park...but by noon, temperatures had risen to the upper single digits and everyone was treated to magnificent sunshine and
a spectacular view of the North Shore mountains.

Ted from CTV was back to document this icon of west coast lifestyle. There were 70 starters this year from as far away as Iowa City and Toronto. A few cheeky runners managed to get their bottoms on national television news. Many more were interviewed and likely had their IQs debated in living rooms across North America.

Most participants agreed to "run friendly" for the first 20 minutes or so. This tradition encourages all runners to get to know one another a bit before the more competitive elements attempt to rip each other's throats out.

Another unique feature of this and other Club Fat *** events is that the route is not marked in any way. That's right, no fluorescent cones, no policemen at intersections, no surveyor tape in the trees or paint on the ground to harm the environment and no white chalk on corners to get the HazMaT (Hazardous Materials Team) all excited...just the written instructions provided by the Event Host.

This year a good 20% of the field got lost to some degree or another, though none for any great distance. Tradition also has it that the Event Host buys a beer for those inconvenienced by bad directions, so the jury will soon be deliberating circumstances around Beaver Lake on the come-home trail through Stanley
Park.

Charges of misleading advertising are pending regarding claims of "no aid" and the requirement that all runners be self-sufficient. For the first time in the 12-year history of the event there were two full-on buffet aid stations along the route. Many thanks to Mark Shorter, Troy Angrignon, Stephanie and David Tatum who set up aid stations at Spanish Banks and the 25K point, and to Keith Nichol and Tom Skinner at North Shore Athletics, Hammergel for the energy gels, Pete Stace-Smith at Norco, and the friends and family who chipped-in home baking and other goodies for the pot-luck aid stations.

We like to emphasize the camaraderie over the competition in this off-season classic, but several competitive records were broken. Dave Cressman, Bill Dagg, Tim Wiens and Jordan Back battled it out for top male runner, while Ellie Greenwood, Rainy Kent and Ann Taylor, Carol Holmes and Celina Kleinschroth represented the top women. Dave kissed the fire hydrant first in 4:33, claiming his third Vancouver New Years Day Fat *** 50 victory. Ellie won top honors for the women in 5:00 and 4th overall finisher. Also of note was that almost half of all participants entered the "Freeze Your Fat *** Swim" in Burrard Inlet. Owen Davis and Doug Kier judged the water to be "bracing". Speaking with a very high-pitched voice at the finisher party, the winner of the prize for the longest swim claimed to have been in for more than 2 minutes...another record!

Speaking of camaraderie and good sportsmanship, there were two particular highlights: Thank you to the homeless man in the shelter on Rawlings Trail in Stanley Park who directed runners toward Second Beach and the seawall. He was howling with laughter by the time I ran by him. Also, one of the top runners slowed to help direct a couple of women who had jogged past a trail junction. "Hey...if you're in the Fat *** 50, you just missed the turn-off!" Apparently startled by the interruption, they both turned around
and responded, "I'm not 50 and I don't have a fat ***!"

This year we moved the post event get-together to the Mosquito Creek Grill in North Vancouver. There was lots of room, good food and a free beer for each runner and crew member. Mark, Troy, Stephanie and David received a standing ovation for their aid stations. Thanks to Norco, Hammergel and the MEC there were lots of fun recognition prizes.

Congrats to all participants and may 2005 bring you good health, happiness and prosperity.
