Re: OREGON RUNNERS
Hey AG, I just got done with my run outside and I got hailed on! I have a treadmill at home and I was going to use it, but my workout for today was a 4 mile run plus 5 100m sprints, so I had to run outside and finish at a track.

I got to agree with you about running on a treadmill, it's pretty freakin' boring. Thank goodness I have my old college stereo in my treadmill room so I can run as LOUD as I want. That's the only way I can tolerate it.

I've been fighting off a nasty respiratory virus for over a week now, so my last three runs have been tough. I'm entered to run a 10K race in little over a week, so I hope I'm over it by then.

Re: OREGON RUNNERS
Ah yes...it appears our normal March weather has finally returned. I had almost forgotten what running in cold rain felt like! I must be fairly assimulated now (after 4+ years) to the PacNW...I actually missed it!

And I'm glad I'm not the only one who'd rather run in the rain than on the treadmill. I just feel so darn uncoordinated on those things!

Happy Running!

Re: OREGON RUNNERS
btw...I'm kicking around the idea of trying the Portland Marathon this year. It would be my first at that distance. Anyone have any experiences they'd care to share?

Re: OREGON RUNNERS
Hey all,
I found the following book to be a good source:
Trail Running Oregon: Northwest and Central Oregon's Classic Trail Runs, by Lizann Dunegan.

It's not comprehensive (that is, it has fewer hikes in it than a normal hiking book), but if you like to hop in the car and drive out to someplace scenic, you might as well bring your running shoes, right? Good descriptions & maps of what look like very scenic and sometimes challenging runs.

AG, at the UO Rec center the upstairs machines (stairmasters etc.) by the indoor track are better because you have a view of the intramural fields below. Plus, you don't have to be encased in a gigantic glass fishbowl. But like all of you, I think indoor training is like doing time in the state pen.

Re: OREGON RUNNERS
Well, I have an non-PC attraction to nike, having worn one of the first pairs on the market in the 1970's when I was a grade schooler. So I go to Nike Town for my shoes, and have been pleased with their selection.

But for real expertise, try One Step Beyond on East Amazon (I think it's one of those places that does custom fits of some sort, including orthotics if you want them). For outright helpfulness I think Eugene Running Company at Oakway Center has great staff, very helpful & enthusiastic. They'll check your gait and they have a lot of good running clothing as well.

Re: OREGON RUNNERS
Yes, I should do more investigating before I buy another pair. My impression was that Nike was not labor-friendly until the spotlight was on them, and now they are very sensitive to criticism and have cleaned up their act -- possibly more so than other shoe companies that were not targeted. But I admit I don't have full info, and should try to find out more. The thing is, I don't want to penalize a company after they have righted a wrong.

Because of labor & a host of other ongoing concerns, I won't shop at Walmart.

Re: OREGON RUNNERS
There is a place out by the Valley River Ctr that isn't bad for picking up a pair of shoes (especially if you have moody feet).

Hey, is anyone planning on doing the Bridge the Gap in a few weeks?

Re: OREGON RUNNERS
Hello from Astoria. Just finally found and read through the posts here. Glad we have a local thread.

Re: Portland Marathon. I did it last year and it was very well organized. It was a last minute decision to run there (I was suppose to be running in Maine that day but missed the plane...long story) but I wasn't disappointed. It's fairly big, and has lots of crowd support at the beginning and end. Less so, but still some, in the middle.

Anyone going to Boston in 2 weeks?

I'm planning to tdo the Mt. Hood 50M the end of July. Not to sure about elevation training, either. Hope it's not imperitive.

Kate

Re: OREGON RUNNERS
Hello fellow Oregonians. I'm in Portland (live on the east side, near the entrance to the Springwater Corridor) and work downtown. I went to school in Eugene (many moons ago) and got a kick out of alaskagrown's reference to Smith Family Bookstore. I remember it well!

For any new runners in the area, there is a great program that starts this weekend called PortlandFit. Its purpose is to help people train for the Portland Marathon. I don't plan to do the marathon, but I'm shooting for the Pacific Crest half in late June. I've participated in PortlandFit before and it is a really good group. Check out their website if you are interested. www.PortlandFit.com[/URL" target="_blank">

Another local race not mentioned here is the Sauvie Island half, which is on July 4. My spouse ran it last year and enjoyed it. Another good site that lists upcoming races is
