Sorry guys, revisiting the whole "y'all busted the server thing"...I'm a moderator on a different website...Word of advice...when you see the thread reach about 20 pages...you might want to begin thinking of starting a new thread. This makes Sue's job a little easier and that way the thread will not take so long to post to or load up.

I thought I might let you all know so that way you can take care of it yourself and so Df doesn't suffer from separation anxiety and you all know what's happening. Remember, you make your own course...

Happy Racing and Training...

Re: Montréal nouveau
MM, MLC and ralf, where are your race report? How was the evil course of Westmount?

I just came back from my 28.5 km run. It went quite well, kept a low HR and there was no signs of a let down! The only thing is my pacing, I've divided my run in 6 blocks ( average of 4.75 km), the first one was a bit fast, 4.55/k, the third and fourth one were at 5.22/k and for the last two one I average 5.14/k. I didn't really felt the change of pace, so I don't know what relly happen! I'll try to work on that part on my next week 32k.

Have a good week all!

Hi!!

I'm very glad I didn't "race" today, my legs sucked! They were so heavy and slow, I just could not go any faster. The lungs outbeated the legs all the way. I ran down Christophe Colomb and then went on Gouin for a while...then ran back home. Pretty boring. Especially the long slow hill back up on Christophe Colomb. It is annoying because the bike trail has a slight inclined and it hurt my left knee. I ran 8 miles. Between mile 3 and mile 6 I was feeling so bad and slow that I wanted to give up but I had forgotten my little running kit with my bus pass and a 10$ bill. That's stupid and dangerous. Weirdly enough, between mile 6 and mile 8 I felt better, almost good.

I am waiting for the race reports !

Oh and it looks like the bad weather is behind us .

Coureur: Yes I am going to add a tempo run in my "schedule"!
I am thinking about a 4 miles run (1 mile warm up, 2 miles tempo, 1 mile cool down) or a 3 miles run (0.5 miles warm up, 2 miles tempo, 0.5 mile cool down; or 1 mile warm up, 1 mile tempo, 1 mile cool down) ?! Uhmmm...
I'm thinking

Monday: 5-6 miles easy
Tuesday: 4 miles easy
Wednesday 3-4 tempo
Thursday: 4 miles easy
Saturday: 9-13 miles

Well, have a nice evening everyone!

Re: Montréal nouveau
Wow! That is some kind of course... Even familiar with it (put aside a detour Chops and I had never noticed on the maps), the Westmount 5 & 10 K course is a killer.

Lots of hills, great part of town to run in, lots of volunteers, and a fantastic organization overall... Nowhere for $20 do you get Chip time, volunteers encouraging you at virtually every street corner, and such goodies in terms of food, drinks, prize drawings, and more. Hats off to the Westmount YMCA, the Running Room, and Puma.

Shortly after signing up, I caught up to Chops near the 5 K finish line. Within a few minutes, I spotted about 150 meters out a big guy looking at the ground right in front of him, with an occasional rise of the head, kind of like coming up for air. There is only one person I know who looks at the ground like that under heavy effort... "Look Chops! That's Ralf coming down the hill to the finish line!" Ralf finished with a great time, and a strained but exalted look on his face. Good work, Ralf.

At that point, Ralf said he would stick around for some pictures and to see us after the race. Wow... cool. And you know what? He probably covered another 5 K taking snapshots of us from at least 4 or 5 different spots around the course. Ralf... you are awesome! Thanks for the support!

As to my race, I really wanted to hold pace for the first loop, see how I felt, and then perhaps pick up the pace a bit on the second loop if I had hit a good rythm. Typically, I am very slow to get going... I take forever (like 45-60 min... ) to really get into a groove, and under race situations, worried about not being to catch up to a slow start later, I tend to start off way too fast (for me), and just hang on for dear life at the end. I've done this repeatedly over the years, over a variety of distances, despite the fact that I know that my long warmup time makes me a natural to achieve negative splits. Last week's HM was a rare exception. Maybe I can set a trend here...

So first, a rough topography::
1 K: We start by going uphill on Côte St-Antoine (tough start!), pretty flat to Claremont, up Claremont (tough but short);
2 K: very slight incline, with some uphill bumps, up Westmount Ave;
3 K: down Forden, around Mulroney's house, then up Forden, and up the rest of Westmount Ave (the toughest uphill segment of the run), down for 50 m on Cedar, and then maybe 300-400 m at an incline on Cedar until Ramezay... killer segment!
4 K: down Montrose... aaaah! time to catch up a bit on the pace, without overdoing it;
5 K: still going down Montrose, down the side of Murray Hill park, and start up CSA again, 5 K marker is halfway up the hill;
6 K: mainly same as 1 K, but about 200 m later;
7 K: same as 2 K + 200 m
8 K: same as 3 K + 200 m
9 K: same as 4 K + 200 m
10 K: up 3/4 of CSA a third time, but before hitting the really tough part, turn left down Arlington, and race downhill to the finish line (I love those downhill sprints to the finish...).

I missed a few markers, so here are the times I have
1 K: 5:17
2 K: 10:21
5 K: 25:23
7 K: 35:26
8 K: 41:00
10 K: 49:45

Hey! Look at that... another negative split! 25:23 for the first loop, 24:22 on the second. HR was pretty much 95-99% HR max on the uphills, 90-95% on the flats and downhills, except for the last 2 K where I kept the HR at 95% and above, trying to kept up maximun effort on the declines to improve my time. It also helped that I was closing in on Chops, and I could see him about 150 m ahead. Finished right near HR max (177 BPM). I guess this race could go under the heading of a Lactate Threshold training run.

Despite the high HR, it's amazing how under these circumstances you can really feel yourself recovering when your HR drops into the low 160s (90-92% HR max for me), down from 170-175 (95-98%).

Hit the finish line, with Ralf taking more pictures, picked up a 4th bottle of Propel (1 in my goodies bag, 2 given to me pre-race), and went up into the Westmount Y's gym for oranges, bananas, bagels & cream cheese, fruit rolls, and yogourt. I didn't go for the fruit cakes, since I am allergic to nuts & peanuts, but there were those, and some soya stuff (blerk!). I listened carefully to the Mix 96 in-home announcer in case I had won a drawing prize, but only Ralf, among the 3 of us, did.

So that's it for now. Great time was had by all on this particular set of evil hills, even if no PBs were set (just not the right kind of course for it).

Ralf, we are on for Tuesday @ 7 AM, and for the rest of the gang, more evil hills on Thursday @ 6 PM.

Take care.

Re: Montréal nouveau
Hey everybody,

sorry for the late report. When I came back after the race the computer was in use and in the afternoon we had tickets for the concert of Han-Na Chang - most beautiful Cello performance I've heard since a long time.

Now to the race. Today, everything worked like a charm. I arrived early, got my timing chip without any delay and even in the restroom I did not have to wait for 15 minutes. I agree with Mars that the race is extremely well organized. Many thanks to the YMCA Westmount crew and their sponsors.

Since this was just my second 5k, and since I did not really train for this distance, I was slightly worried about the correct timing. Knowing the course (including the detour) pretty well, I intended to start not too fast. The first 2 k went by in 5:39 and 5:26. Good! But then came the third km (see Mars report): 6'01. Autsch, I saw my goal time of 27 minutes vanishing in tiny puffs of smoke (no specific color). So, on the steep descent on Ramzey at the beginning of km 4, I let loose. The 5km sign flew by at 4:46. When I came down to Côte St. Antoine I knew that I would reach my goal. So, up the last incline and down to the finish. The last km took me 4:42 with an official race time finish at 26:36. Wow, 26s less than my first bid at this distance (on a much flatter course). Now it is tempting to raise my goal time for the HM next weekend. However, I am not sure that this is too much of a good idea.

The best thing of all was that Chops and Mars were waiting for me at the finish line. Thank you so much. It makes such a huge difference when somebody you know is there.

The rest has been pretty much covered by Mars. I went to the car, put on a jeans and a jacket, took my camera and made it in time for the start of the 10k. Then I WALKED around the course cheering up everybody and trying to get photos of the Cool Runners. Afterwards we enjoyed the food. I even tried the soya beverage once more, although I know by experience that I don't like it - Yuck.

Unluckily the photos are somewhat disappointing. I think that part of the problem was a lack of light due to the clouded sky. This pushed up the exposure times making it impossible to get sharp pictures of fast moving runners. Nevertheless, I have uploaded some of the pics. You can find them on (remove the _no_spam_):

Enjoy, Ralf

PS: Mars, see you on Tuesday 7am.

Wow! Great pictures Ralph. I especially like the one where we can see the 3 of you, after the race. Great shot!

Congratulations to all of you, it's not an easy one, from what I know.

I wish I could have been there but I really still feel quite burned out. I'm going for a short 7k this evening... I'm tired just thinking about it. Well, at least Coureur will be there with his ever going energy.

When's our next social get-together? I will try to be there.

Ralph: Thanks for the pictures.

Everybody1: I would like to find a nice public outside 400 track not too far away from dowtown. Use to go to Westmount High (Ste-Catherines West) but the dirt gets way too bumpy during summer (who wanna be running in truck tracks ?). Any suggestion ?

Everybody2: June 11 is the Whiteface run-to-the-top (near Lake Placid, NY). A crazy race that goes up, and up, and up and away... Picture this: Friends/family can wait for you at the top, picnic, sunbathing then to top it off we could hike our way down through the mountain. Any question ?? Who's interested ??

I sometimes run on the track in Parc Kent (Côte de Neiges). I think it's public (at least nobody asked me any questions ever) and I hope that it is 400m. Ok, there are often soccer games going on in the middle, but I don't care.

Re: Montréal nouveau
Hi Chops,

I ran on the track in Kent Park last summer. Pretty fun considering you get to see a variety of different runners there. From recerational to triathalon training. Unfortunately, I don't recall the distance of a perimeter. Would anyone else know? From the map below, it's pretty close the Jewish General hospital.

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=montreal&ll=45.504974,-73.633329&spn=0.014832,0.028357&hl=en[/URL" target="_blank">

The only drawback about this course is that it is somewhat old and you don't want to run alone there when the sun sets. Let's just say that the darker elements of that area start to turn up.

They have a washroom facilities but I do not recall if they have lockerettes.

Enjoy,

TB

Kent park which is on the corner of Kent St. and Cote des Neiges is a 400 m rubberized track. A little bit farther outside the centre of the city you have a fast outdoor track at Claude Robbillard, and at Parc Maisoneuve there is a track where the Vainquers, and MTLO train.

Re: Montréal nouveau
Hi

Coureur: thank you very much. you are right it looks easier to break it down in two one mile tempo run. I know that gaining speed is hard. that is why I always focus on distance (but I did heard several time that building mileage is the way to increase speed, at first. right?) That...and because the first two miles of everyrun are mostly BLAH, so I don't like short runs. I feel best after 40 minutes. (like mountmars! ) I will try this on wednesday (0.5 mile warm up, 1 miles tempo, 1 mile recovery, 1 mile tempo, 0.5 miles cool down).
I will tell you how it goes.

Those are really great pictures!

Next week, same time, I will be graduating.
Very weird. I'm excited, but already nostalgic.

Véronique
