CoolRunner Is A Spammers Dream

I registered my organization's run. Then established a dedicated mailbox to receive any inquiries. 72 hours later that dedicated mailbox is getting spam. First one arrived yesterday. Another today. I see a trend.

How about locking down the email list? Take a lesson from eBay, only send emails via your website ... NEVER post the email address for others to take.

I say this assuming you did not actually sell or give away my mailbox address.

Be more than happy to forward the emails and their headers to you as evidence of the crime.

Hi Spam Hater,

Are you reading our thoughts? We are in the process of doing exactly what you are suggesting. Keep the good ideas coming.

Re: CoolRunner Is A Spammers Dream
In the few weeks I have had a coolrunning specific mailbox active, emails have arrived from 45 different IP addresses, representing 14 countries. 3 emails were valid questions. The rest were:

19 - spam, Nigerian financial opportunities
35 - block due to spam black lists
43 - virus attempts (12 today, hence why I am unhappy)
70 - spams caught by custom logic that would have gotten
through otherwise

Whatever your "plans", they are taking too long. My posting to coolrunning was for the benefit of a charity. Therefore my unhappiness must be controlled. Runners, any runners, from your postings must be received with thanks.

But ...

Same here, I posted a while ago, that there should be an
option to enter one's email address in a
Joe DOT smith AT blah DOT org
format.

Re: CoolRunner Is A Spammers Dream
I have been on CR since 2000 and don't recall receiving any spam directly atributable to this site. I have received occasional unsolicited running related emails which may or may not have originated from here but none of the Nigerian stuff or other types of spam you mention. Have you checked your antivirus and spyware software packages to make sure they are doing their function properly?

Re: CoolRunner Is A Spammers Dream
I've been here a few years now and the only emails that I can attribute to having my email listed here are from other Cool Runners and are definitely not spam. Perhaps a few junk emails are finding their way to me due to Cool Running but the Yahoo filter catches all that stuff anyway so it's of litle relevance to me.

Although I would certainly appreciate any improvements made to the website (security, log enhancements, etc) I am grateful to have this website as it is and find it to be a valuable resource.

I've recieved a few ad's over the past 2 years I've been a member, but no spam directly attributable to this site - btw I'm in computer security and I can tell you that spammers don't need a list - they brute force your email.
