When and what to eat when running early in the morning

Now that the summer is coming, I got a job and it's really early in the morning and ends in the late afternoon. The only time that I have to run would be early in the morning. I eat carbs just before I go to bed that way I don't run on an empty stomach and feel really flat. But I want to lose weight, though and my parents are advising me that I'll only gain weight through this and I'm not helping myself. Anybody have any suggestions so that I can eat healthy but won't wake up hungry and feel as if I have no energy when I run? Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

I advise drinking a sports drink before your run, like maybe 8-12 oz. of Gatorade or Powerade. Try it about 15 minutes before your run. This might put some gas in the tank, early in the morning for you. Then you wouldn't have to worry too much about the carbs at night, although I don't think that is a problem if you have a good solid exercise & diet strategy. At the end of the day, its still calories in vs. calories out that determines weight gain or loss.

Rick is right...It doesn't really matter what time of day you eat as long as you are burning off more than you take in overall. Before a morning run, I often grab a Luna Bar or maybe a peanut butter & honey sandwich, but nothing milk based (like cereal) because it gives me stomach cramps. I don't have trouble with eating before a run, but I don't overdo it and have some huge meal or something. I take water with me (love that Amphipod belt), but I use Gatorade if I'm going more than about 10-12 miles.

If you're trying to lose weight too, check out these websites...They have helped me lose over 40 lbs.

www.fitday.com helps you balance calories in vs. calories out. You log both your food and your exercise. Free.

www.ediets.com is great for meal planning, but if you're still living at home you may not have all that much control over what meals are prepared. Small fee with this site, but it's worth it.

Good luck,
Amy

Eating carbs before going to bed is a recipe for weight gain. I avoid a major meal 4-6 hours before I run, regardless the time of day. I find something like a banana is easily digested and works well if have to have something on my stomach before running. You could try an energy bar or gel, too. Avoid dairy products as noted

I agree with the banana; also a tablespoon or two of honey washed down with a glass of water works for me. Honey is pure and simple carb so is readily available for fuel, and is cheaper than gels or bars. This was recommended by Liz Applegate, a well-known nutritionist/fitness enthusiast.

Re: When and what to eat when running early in the morning
I really wouldn't suggest a sports drink before your run. All that really does for you is give you sugar and water. Drink a glass of orange juice if that's what you want, not those expensive drinks. Also, sports drinks really shouldn't be used if you are working out less than an hour.

When I get up to run, I have something with a decent amount of protein and some carbs to it, like a peanut butter sandwich or something of that ilk. Hoever, I am not a hard-core runner. I'll run, at most, 5 miles in a given morning, usually 3.5-4. In your message, you don't say how much your run currently, how much you are planning to run and what other exercises you do, so it is difficult to suggest things for you to use when you run.

Like was said above, weight gain/loss is still basically a matter of amount in versus amount out. What you should be focusing on is listening and observing your own body. Eat healthy foods, mostly. If you try and go draconian, most will fail. Eat lean meats, plenty of green veggies, cut out most of the **** and be sure to exercise. Body weight is not a measure of health. Two 200lb men can be completely different in terms of fitness and health. Scales can be a great discourager, especially for those trying to lose weight, because you can put on muscle and lose fat and stay the same weight. The number will stay the same, but your strength, stamina and health will increase, as will how you body looks and feels.

Good luck.

Re: When and what to eat when running early in the morning
I still think a sports drink is fine, because there isn't much acidity that could cause stomach disruption, which has happened with athletes who I've had that have drank orange juice or some other fruit juices. Since its early in the morning, the sports drink should absorb pretty quickly (its formulated to absorb quickly). Most athletes I've had who've had this problem with working out in the morning on an empty stomach, the 8-12 oz. of a sports drink does the job, and gets very quickly digested. A bagel or sandwich might take longer and cause stomach upset, especially with the up & down motions of running.

Just my experiences,

I'm sure Gatorade has some citric acid, but not as much as orange juice. I always run first thing in the morning or several hours after a meal. I agree that you don't want to eat a big portion of pasta right before bed if you're trying to lose weight. Eating meals early with help you burn calories throughout the day. Most of the meals that others have suggested sound good to me.

Re: When and what to eat when running early in the morning
Well, this is turning into a debate of sorts! I hope we help Flyfeet too! With all due respect to deadocmike, I think he is missing the point. What Flyfeet is seeking in her question is readily available fuel for her early a.m. run, not a balanced meal.
(S)he can't get up 2 hours earlier to eat something which needs time to digest and become available to the muscles. Peanut butter is high fat,and fat is slow to break down. I have the same issue, and I too feel "flat" if I work out after an 8-10 hour fast. You eat the protein with some carb afterwards to help muscle recover. That's why so many athletes eat post-workout breakfasts of egg whites and oatmeal. The balanced diet with the right mix of lean protein and complex carbs from grains and vegetables is the diet to follow for each regular meal. 4-5 smaller meals are better than 3 larger ones for both athletic energy AND weight loss. The night-before carb loading, in my opinion, is what you do before competition (actually, days before). I say, forget that, Flyfeet. It's not called for in the case of the everyday workout. But, as Rick says, for immediate pre-workout fuel, simple sugar is what you want because it's readily available. That's why Applegate recommends honey (see previous reply). Sports drinks work for me too. Buy the powdered form to mix yourself and it's cheaper. It's misleading to say that sports drinks SHOULDN'T be used for sub 1-hour workouts; the thing is, they are not usually NECESSARY for sub 1-hour workouts because you are probably not going to sweat enough to require potassium or sodium replacement (read the label; it's not merely simple liquid carb!). And that's just MY experiences (and a little bit of research!) Michelle AKA Fast 45

P. S. Interesting bit of trivia to spice up the conversation: The former Olympic marathoner, now celebrated coach, book author and Runner's Worldcontributor, Hal Higdon, drinks-guess what? before a marathon---a can of soda pop! Simple sugar to fuel the effort!

Amy's new favorite pre-run breakfast:

Thick, Belgian-style waffle with reduced fat peanut butter and lite syrup.

FIL gave us a very sexy professional waffle maker for our wedding. I buy waffle mix that lets me add my own milk, eggs, and oil. I use skim milk, Egg Beaters, and applesauce instead of oil. I make a big batch at once and freeze the leftovers.

Even my food fussy husband loves these things. I had one this morning before heading out for 18 miles, and I was fine. BTW...There's a reason why Runner's World voted Minneapolis the 6th best runner friendly city in the country...This place has awesome trails!

WRT sports drinks: If you check out the nutritional information on the bottles, you are right, they do contain electrolytes. Only at lower concentrations that your body (and your sweat) so by drinking them, your are actually diluting the potassium and sodium in your body. A little bit of research and some knowledge of human physiology go a long way. I was merely trying to suggest a less expensive way for the young man to get the sugar he needs to get up and go.

Re: When and what to eat when running early in the morning
In my experience, the more you practice running on an empty stomach, the more efficient your body becomes at using glycogen stored in muscles or stored fat for energy. While the 1st few runs on an empty stomach might leave you feeling "flat", after 2-3 of these you will start to feel more energetic on these runs. Fit people can run well even while fasting. Don't be afraid to run without food in your tummy.
The exception to this idea is that a decent speed workout (intervals, strides, drills, etc.) requires some carbs in your bloodstream.

However, everyone's different, so experiment and do what works for you.

Good luck!

Re: When and what to eat when running early in the morning
I would absolutely disagree with what 07mab_2 said about training on an empty stomach. This does not improve your body's efficiency at utilizing glycogen, in fact, it assists you in hitting 'the wall' faster. Who goes on a car trip and fills the tank once they return home? I do not know how many miles you are running in the am, but consider this: You use X amount of energy per hour when you sleep and your liver only stores X amount of glycogen, which is used to maintain blood sugar levels (for repair, heart & lung function, etc.) while you sleep. The amount of glycogen left in the am, depending on your required needs is extremely low. So, the body must create sugars to maintain blood sugar when the liver is empty. Where does the body derive this energy from - muscles. So, you break down what you are supposed to try to improve in the first place. Bottom line, you need some sort of energy before a morning run to replace what was used while sleeping. As mentioned in earlier posts, there are many foods/drinks that will work, but you will have to test them out to see how your body responds to them. The length of my run will determine what I personally eat...short runs I go with a banana -longer runs I eat egg whites and oatmeal. You don't want foods higher in fat because they are harder to break down and can cause stomach upsets. You will have to test it on your own, but never go out empty!!

Re: When and what to eat when running early in the morning
I think you're already doing the right thing and it seems to work for you. You won't have to worry about weight gain if you keep running. However, I eat 100% whole wheat for carbs before bed time. I found that eating regular carbs late at night caused me to get a faster burst of energy and I wound up sleeping less.
