I'm glad you're looking at it, but understand that as a newbie to running the lack of a search function severely limits the utility of this site.

The articles are nice, but they are limited. The true value of a site like this lies in the wealth of knowledge, experiences, and opinions stored in the archived discussions. All of which is useless when it cannot be searched.

Hi,

I'm a long time lurker, first time poster. I just thought that I would sign up to share this nugget in here.

If people are truly desperate to search the site they can use google to accomplish this. You can tell google to search a specific website. e.g. I wanted to find all posts related to Asics GT2100 shoes at coolrunning so I went to google.com and I typed in:

site:coolrunning.com "Asics GT2100"

and I get the following results:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site%3Acoolrunning.com+%22Asics+GT2100%22[/URL" target="_blank">

I hope this helps in the short term.

Indeed, that is a workaround that works reasonably well - Thanks for posting it.

The only thing is I find I have to look at the cached version since the direct link from Google keeps coming up with a Page Not Found from this site, I suppose due to the discussion having been moved to the archive. And while the cached page is certainly useful, it is frustrating to be unable to go to other pages of the thread. (At least I've not found a way).

I miss the search function too, but Mark seems to have a good way to search the cool running posts.

One way to get to the restof the pages is to simply reply to the post. This will bump it to the top of the threads. From there you can get to page 2 and beyond.... At least it has worked for me on threads that seemed "locked" on page one.

You might put your searches in more of a Batch mode rather than interactively showing your results. You can then control the amount of resources that gets assigned to the batch processing. So you provide the search it just might take longer. You could then put the results to the requestors email address. The off the shelf software you mention might limit you from doing this but that is how I would approach the problem as a system designer....my day job....Good luck.

Also consider some additional, mandatory limiters into the search which would reduce the search set. Then again, if it's all flat file, it's blow anyway

I do agree, search very valuable, so worth the effort to figure it out. Can you leave the link and in instead of going into the search, it displays a note saying what is going on? "i.e. hey due to heavy volume this is off right now, try again later"

just a thought, not everyone knows about the Suggestion box - and those who are newest are probably those who want/need the search.

Whatever, rock on.

Bump because every good American forum deserves a search feature.

So what is the deal with the search feature? On or Off? You turn it off because people use it, but is that not the point?

Having a search feature would prevent having the same topics posted over and over again.

But then we wouldn't be able to show how considerate we are by replying to them over and over again.

One result of the absent search feature has been the setting up of the Newbie FAQ[/URL" target="_blank">. Bookmark it - it's got answers to more questions than you can imagine.
