Schwartz must be Tinman. If you read this article you realize that he says the same things as Tinman does.

Schwartz = Tinman
Tinman = Schwartz

Doesn't Jim swear by Tinman. He is always quoting him.

Tinman coaches Jim.
Jim is (or was) coached by Schwartz.

Jim knows the "Power of the Schwartz" the greatest secret in running and in the universe.

If I could do 10 sub 6's in a week it would mean that I would be racing a whole lot faster than I can now. If I ran 12 a day for a week I couldn't make that same conclusion. For that reason I'd take the sub 6's, but don't necessarily think it's a better training strategy.

It's true that I think highly of Tinman's knowledge about training, and running in general. I've been coached by him and also used him as more of a consultant. I was following his workouts pretty closely up unitl Cal 10 in January, and then went off on my own with the racing binge. His general rule of thumb is no more than two 10k's in a month.

From my experience, the CV intervals have yielded some of the best results. You do them for long periods too without burning out (providing you are not racing your brains out every weekend).

Ilene,

I saw on some other thread that you run more than 9 hours a week. Is that true? That's a lot leaning forward. My average is about 6 1/2.

Ilene, nice going on the win. And the no spitting was equally impressive.

I imagine there are many good coaches out there, but the reason I like Tinman's approach is that he takes the time to explain the physiological reasons behind why you do what you do. I am of the mindset that I cannot perform unless I understand why I do what I do. Most people perform best this way. It is a known axiom in human performance technology.

The Tinman approach is working quite well for me right now. I get mileage and quality without losing sight of where I am going, and so far I have been healthy and prepared for my next workout. I do not see that the Pfitzinger people can say the same thing. Spareribs

I think the Tinman approach is a good one. Sub optimal gets you further even though there is something very appealing about Fred's "Banzai" approach. I astruggled so much with interval training that eventually I disregarded it and focused on miles and races to get me there. Had I known of the CV concept I might have tried it.

Ilene. There is nothing wrong with not setting PR's but winning hardware. I know. I have 3 boxes full of medals and trophy's out in my garage at home in Oregon. Strangley enough I have very few trophy's or medals from PR setting races. Generally I ran my PR's in very competitve races where I would not finish in the top 3 because the fields were so deep. I always preferred PR's to medals though but I took what I could get.

My best 5K was run in a field of 15 runners where I was third from the last and was lapped once by the leaders who were running in the mid 13's.
