Today I did some shopping online for running skirts. I really really like the runningskirts.com site because there are so many color choices. Color choices are a bit more limited with skirtsports.com (Triks). However, I am leaning towards going with a solid black anyways (black is always slimming right? ), but when I see the prices for the Athletic skirt or the GymGirl line they are upwards of about $60. It's really hard for me to swallow spending that much money on a skirt! runningskirts has some that are around $48 I think, but I think I like the longer length of the ones that are $58 (athletic skirt, I think it's called). I have such long legs that I think one that has a bit more in the length would look better on me and not so "mini".

I also looked at roadrunnersports and they have some as well. Has anyone tried those? There is a brooks brand and a Nike brand I think. they look nice and are not quite as expensive (although I still gulp at spending $40-$50 on a running skirt!), but I'm wondering if the liners underneath stay as put as they do on the runningskirts or skirtsports ones? I know Econo and Dove both like triks, as well as a few others that have commented how good they are.

decisions decisions. When I'm spending that much on one piece of running attire, I want to make sure it's good and that I'll be happy with it.

Tammy,
Triks is having a sale on their all-black skirts right now. They still aren't cheap, but the Gym Girl can be had for around $55. Click on the Sale tab on their home page to see the skirts I'm talking about.

I'll check it again Dove . . I think I checked out the sale items but they didn't have my size. I wear a size 8 normally, so if I'm remembering right that puts me at a size 3 in those skirts. But I looked at so many sites yesterday, so I'll doublecheck that one.
Thanks.

Are these skirts that you are talking about only available online, or can you find them at Dick's or running stores? I'm too chicken to order something that I haven't tried on before. Since I'm so short, many skirts hang too far down, or they hang down low in the front but short in the back (because of my oversized butt). I'd love to get a running skirt, though - they look so cute on other women I've seen them in.

I am pretty sure that runningskirts.com is only online. But I seem to recall Triks (skirtsports.com) having a link you can click to find a local retailer. Unfortunately, in Oregon, there was only one place that sold them in stores and it was an athletic club in Sisters, Oregon, which is about 4-5 hrs away.

Dove - I checked again and I was mistaken. The MarathonGirl is on sale, but didn't have my size. I think I would normally go with a medium, but it says the MarathonGirl runs small so to size up and they did not have any larges. But the GymGirl does have my size and is also on sale (not by as much, but I guess I'll give it a whirl!)

thanks.

Tammy - the skirts just went on sale today, that's why you didn't see them when you checked yesterday!

I've seen women wear them in races before ( particularly when I was up in Portland - saw quite a few of them in fact ). I've never seen anyone wear them in local races where I live, but this is small town america and not the hippest when it comes to fashion . . . hence, my desire to wear one! LOL

I'll let Dove answer "why wear one" since she does wear them. But from what I hear from her and others and even online reviews I've read, they are VERY comfortable, they don't have any of the "shorts riding up" issues that some women have and they are cute - girly girl style I suppose - add a bit of flare and fun to running. Certainly not for everyone, but those that try them out seem to prefer them to shorts.

Running skirts? Where do you live that you're seeing women in running skirts? I've never, ever, ever seen anyone wearing one here in Southern California. I don't think I've even seen them in a store. What's the benefit of wearing a skirt instead of shorts?

Sandi,

There were at least a dozen women running in skirts at the Carlsbad Marathon and a handful at the Lost Dutchman Marathon in Arizona. Last year I was the only woman wearing a skirt at the Lost Dutchman so I think the trend in definitely catching on. I live in Washington State... I don't see many skirts up here yet, but I sure do get lots of women asking about mine when I'm out running.

I think you'll see a lot more in the next few years as women try them and discover how comfortable, cool and flattering they are.

I'm anxiously waiting for some of the Boomer guys to try running kilts!

Yes, but without the lining...

I just mentioned this in the daily, but it's more topical here. Mr. Bill posted on the daily thread with the link to One More Mile - his site, I gather, but I looked at the running skirts at his site and they are only $29.00. At that price, I may try one, even though I can't try it on first. Cute shorts, too, which are tempting me.

Sandi, from what you say, we have the same bodies.

Did you notice the running skirt thread?

In addition, here are a couple of comments from the newbie thread:

from Eliz:
I LOVE my running skirts. I ran in Champion compression shorts when I started l and hated the way they accentuated my huge stomach. Tried other shorts over top, but that felt awful. Found this great tennis skirt by Wilson for $20 at Modells. It's a little longer than most of the "true" running skirts I've found and super comfortable.

from me:
Re: running skirts. I received one as a gift, and don't think I'll ever wear it. It's an Adidas, has bike shorts underneath, sits on hips (not the style for me - emphasizes stomach and flab around the middle). It's a little too short, and with the slits up both sides of the skirt, the shorts show a lot, and the look isn't flattering to me. But the idea of the tennis skirt intrigues me. I'm gonna go to Mo's and try one on. If it fits like my "skirtini" swimsuit bottoms, it will look great.

Tammy - real Scotsmen don't wear anything under their kilts...

With regard to the riding up issue, I'm short-waisted so usually tops come down quite low on me, but if you wanted the high-fashion tops, I suppose if desperate to keep them in place you could try sewing some velcro on the bottom edge of the top and the upper edge of your shorts/skirt/pants? I think you can get iron-on velcro too.
