Re: How does your garden grow?
We planted a garden last spring and it was great. We had to share with deer, which wasn't so great. The cantalopes were a treat, however the pumpkins were not productive. I like spring flowers, tupils and irises in particular. http://photos.3scape.net/pic/3297[/URL" target="_blank"> . Every spring the Iris Farm in Traverse City gets some of our money.

Re: How does your garden grow?
My tomato plant source says to crush your egg shells and place them in the hole before you plant the tomatoes. I'm trying that this year. My tomatoes are always iffy.

last year I had a bumper crop of red sweet peppers. Delicious.

I do not fight deer. I fight the more ferocious bunny rabbit in my garden. They ate every single iris that I planted last year (many) It will be interesting to see if they come back.

I'm a mater' lover. I dedicate my entire garden patch of 6X20 to eight plants per year. I end up giving a bunch of tomatoes away.

I also have some roses I like.

Re: How does your garden grow?
I don't garden; my wife does. She plants, I eat. It's a nice division of labor. She just put in a bunch of early plants this weekend...brocolli, collards, lettuce, soy, cabbage, etc.

Ever since this thread started, I can't get Rufus Thomas out of my head. "If you don't know how to do it, I'll show you how to walk the dog..."

Re: How does your garden grow?
This is an interesting thread. We have had a garden ever since we've been married, over 30 years. It is primarily my wife's project. My main job is using the roto tiller. Currently our garden is about 75 ft by 75 ft. but has been a little smaller and as large as 5 or 6 times what we have now. Our asparagus and rhubarb have been prolific since planted about 27 years ago. We always have tomatoes, corn, string beans, sugar snap peas, bell peppers, and summer squash. In the past we have had strawberries, rasberries, winter squash, pumpkins, potatoes, brocolli, sun flowers, and brussel sprouts. There's probably more that I forgot. We also have trouble with deer and rabbits as well as the occasional raccoon. Our garden has brought my wife a lot of pleasure both in growing it and using the produce. I definitely enjoy the fresh veggies for much of the summer and into the fall.

Me, too! I have a small plot (6 x 30) in my backyard that I devoted entirely to tomato plants last year, although I think I had 16 in there. My husband and I love to eat sliced garden tomatoes with seasoned rice vinegar, plus I'm a big salad eater. I froze a bunch for soups and sauces and still have some left to use up. I've experimented with many other veggies, but had minimal success. Grean beans and tomatoes are always my bumper crop. This year I'm adding cilantro, jalepinas, and onions, though, because I, too, am a big salsa lover.

Yes, me too. I have a what is supposed to be "rabbit fence" around my garden, but we always have a family of bunnys move in under the shed in the spring, and last year I watched one fly through my fence like it wasn't even there.

What was really bad though, was the year that a couple groundhogs moved in under the shed. I had waited all summer for my slow-pokey broccali to bloom, and one day I went outside and found them stripped to the ribs.

SteveP, what a lovely pic. I think I'd like to lie down in that iris field and look up at the clouds.

DaveinAAmissingHawaii, I'd take the dishpan hands in return for avocados galore and sleeping on the beach and running up the hills and swimming in the ocean.

Re: How does your garden grow?
That palce has 10 acers of irises. Over 600 varieties. You can buy the cut flower of $1.00 each and the ryzhome for $5.00...Maybe $8.00...My brain acts strange some times. Every time DW and I go there, it makes me think of my grandmother. She was never able to go there with us, however we did get her a bouquet the spring before she passed. I'll always remember her reaction. DW and I get just a few every year. Untill we have some of all of the varities. It's should take about 235 years. I'll still be running.

Here's a reminder of spring for those who are still enduring cold temps...some garden shots from last year.

Some pink azaleas beside my "retreat" that I built myself 3 years ago - before I got fully into running and had a lot more time.

Yellow lillies from last year

I can't STAND those wasscally wabbits that like to eat the tender plants. Once June or July comes, whatever has survived usually does okay!

Re: How does your garden grow?
was going to venture out back to plant stuff this weekend but the snow that we are expecting may cause my plan to not come to fruition. last year our dog kept the rabbits away mostly but since we had to put her to sleep over the winter, i will probably have a hare problem also. but we have so many trees in our backyard that not much grows well or at least meets my grandiose expectations, thus my gardening is more cathartic than practical.

Re: How does your garden grow?
Peter, you built your "retreat"? Wowee, that's impressive! Such a lovely setting too and the azaleas and lilies are beautiful!
