Re: Another marathon in 6 weeks - should I do it?
Holly you can definately do it considering the training you have put in. I ran my 8th marathon (Maine) on October 1st of last year and got a PR by 6:48 and a BQ. Two weeks later on October 15th I ran the Bay State Marathon and figured I would just see what happened, well everything just fell in place and I ended up with another PR by 5:50 and a second BQ!

Now of course everyone is different and as kspowell stated if you run this second marathon so soon after the first be prepared to take some time off afterwards...that was my biggest mistake and almost cost me a serious injury. I got lucky though and was able to nurse myself back. Just be careful and listen to your body.

Whatever you decide I wish you the best of luck.

Oh yeah, I'm sure you can come up with a way to get your husband to "eagerly volunteer" to watch the kids without complaint on Sundays, whether he's been working overtime or not. It still works on me.

Works on me, too! It might even get you a oil massage again, too!

Holly, my take is do what your heart tells you, because your heart must be in it to do another one so quickly. (or another one, period!)
If your determined, you are smart enough to train for it with the remaining time and go for it.
If not, as someone said, do a few short races and have a little fun. I have been having a ball running some local 5k's and 5 milers before I gear up for my next marathon.

Just my thoughts.

Fran

p.s. I think Robin is absolutley right. Your traing schedule is overly aggressive. You have a great base. Stay fit and injury free is more important now.

Re: Another marathon in 6 weeks - should I do it?
Holly, this is an order - don't do it!

Seriously, 2 marathons a year max, several months apart until you become a marathon vet. There are lots of shorter races available.

There are certain posters on this forum who went marathon crazy at an early stage in their running "career" have picked up long-term injuries.

What if you have fun at this one and find out there is another one nearby 6 weeks later? Its addictive.

Its not worth the risk.

Respect the distance! Please don't undo all the good work you have done.

Feel free to ignore this advice at your own peril.

Re: Another marathon in 6 weeks - should I do it?
Hi, Holly.

My opinion tends to coincide with BAP's, but then again, I'm not an experienced marathoner or runner (been running for 3 years). I've only done two marathons so far, and am training for a third in May. Last year, I did a May 28 marathon, and then one on November 5th. After my first in May (I ran a 4:08), I took about 3 days off and started running a recovery schedule that involved 5 to 8 mile runs for about 3 weeks. Our running group started its fall marathon training schedule about 3 weeks after the May marathon, and I know that it took me a good 6 weeks post marathon before I felt my energy return and my intervals, tempo runs and long runs start to feel good again. I know I could not (without injury) have run a long run of 20 miles, let alone another marathon, within that 6 week period. I experienced the same 6 week period of lack of energy following my November marathon.

Again, as everyone else has said, everyone is different and you may be perfectly fine to go ahead and run a second marathon in 6 weeks. This is just my experience.

Best of luck with your decision!

Karen

Holly
I think that's a wise decision. You'll have loads of fun in the HM with your friend and plenty of time to plan for another one for the autumn.
