Weekly Boomer Eating Healthy or Battle of the Bulge Challenge - 4/09 - 4/15

This challenge will end when you achieve your goal. I didn't want to put an end date on this since some of us may need this longer than others. I'll still start a new thread weekly. Even if you don't need to make any dietary changes to your menu, still post here if you'd like and let us know what works for you. Healthy recipes are always welcome.
Similar to the last challenge....... your goal may be eating healthier, like more fruits/veggies, drinking more water, losing weight or sharing health tips. If I notice you not posting for awhile, I may have a missing in action section. Good luck everyone!!!

Hi, is it too late you join you guys? Some of the pounds I thought I'd lost last fall seem to have found me again, so it's time to banish them for good.

I lost 25 pounds between the end of June and Thanksgiving last year but have rediscovered 5 of them over the last 2 months or so. This reinforces my belief that "losing" weight isn't the right term; when I lose something, I usually look for it again; I don't want extra pounds back, ever.

Anyway, my current goal is to weigh 10 pounds less than I do now on the last day of school, in 10 weeks. Should be easily do-able, with boomer help, of course. That will still leave me with about 40 more pounds to banish forever, but I'll think about after the next 10 are gone.

Goals for this week:
1. drink at least 2 liters of water every day
2. track calories on sparkpeople
3. continue running approx 10 miles/week
4. add strength training 2x/week

I'm happy with my results last month since starting with this group and the Weightloss Pact to lose 5 pounds in 5 weeks. Basically I've been limiting my calories to around 1300 per day, not really eating at night, drinking more fluids, working out with my trainer 2 times per week and a running schedule of around 3-4 days a week. So far it's getting me around 1 pound per week loss - I'll take that anytime.

So, same design this week. On to losing the final 6 pounds, no rush or time frame, just to keep going in the right direction.

Hi Eliz, sure it's fine to join this thread, Welcome!
Lynne, thanks for starting and have you found your mojo yet?
Sherie, I could have sworn I saw where you were eating more then 1300 earlier.
Anyway I am going to try to keep it between 1300 and 1400 instead of my earlier under 1550. If it goes to 1550 so be it, I'd rather it be a little slower losing then starve myself. Also going to cut down on carbs a bit at the suggestion of the nutritionist I saw Friday. Not cut out, just down. Which is fine with me, I was only having so much because of the pie chart at SparkPeople where I keep my food journal saying I was under in them. Pie chart, not a user friendly term for someone endeavoring to lose weight

Good eating and good health to everyone this week

Good Morning Everybody !
My goals this week are to
Log 20 miles inspite of this nagging Plantar Fasciitis. Keep my daily caloric intake at 1500 or below. Add a mile to my long run on sunday, and buy a scale
Have a good week

Morning everyone and welcome Eliz!

I had a pretty good weekend. The only alcohol I had (empty calories) was Easter morning when I had 2 bloody Mary's. I got out for runs both days, but they were really slow and I had no energy! Have you all experienced this with the lower calorie counts? It may have just been because of the colder than normal weather and snow - but I had zip in the tank.

I had a few chocolate eggs - I mean it was Easter afterall! But I am happy that I didn't over-indulge in anything at all. I would like to be able to just eat "normal" and have a treat once in a while without going overboard. That is my goal anyway.

Eliz - congratulations on the 25 pound weight loss! I agree that 10 pounds in 10 weeks should be doable and we will help you along. I think it is smart to loose the weight in segments - it seems more manageable that way.

Sherie - Congrats on your 5 pound loss! Sounds like you are on the right track and doing well.

Barb - I have to go back and read what your nutritionist said. I could not ever cut out carbs altogether - I love them TOO much! So true about the pie chart!!

UMWB - be careful with your running. You don't want to make matters worse do you? I bought my scale at Target - $20 and I love it.

I'm so mad - I cut up some fresh honey dew and watermelon last night and left it at home!! argh . . . .

Hey Mary, as long as you didn't leave it sitting out, now that would be tragic

I am pasting this out of a web site RE: weight training for those struggling to lose and running as your only form of exercise.

It has been determined that anaerobic exercise will burn more calories than aerobic exercise, on a ratio of 5 to1 basis, and even as much as a 7 to 1 ratio. The aerobic exercise will burn 25% muscle and 75% fat, while anaerobic exercise will burn 100% fat.

Examples of aerobic exercises are:

1. Aerobic classes that can be dancing to music or step dancing (fast movements).
2. Treadmills
3. Exercise bicycles
4. Ski machines
5. Air gliders
6. Jogging
7. Sports such as racquetball and handball

Examples of anaerobic exercises are:

1. Weight lifting
2. Machines that offer resistance
3. Dumbbells

Anaerobic exercises use resistance so that you will also be building muscle and bone as an added benefit. Aerobic exercise will have more of an impact on the cardiovascular and circulatory system. Combining the two would give the greatest health benefits.

Hally/barb, I'm not so sure about the statistic you gave us. My past experience is running has always burned more calories then weighlifting. I workout with a personal trainer now. It wasn't until I was able to run again did I start to see the scale go down. I don't know, maybe it's just my body or me - but anytime I've started a weightout routine, I never see the scale go down. Weights does do a lot of other wonderful things to the body, but I just don't know about weightloss on the scale. I think a wellrounded workout of both cardio and weights is the optimium.

I was eating more then 1400 calories a while ago,but I wasn't making any headway, so I lowered it to around 1400 for now. That's when I saw movement on the scale. That, and it just takes time to build up the amount of added energy to burn off that pound.

Uglyman, oh... be careful, running in your condition will not allow your body to heal. Maybe power walking?

Hi Eliz and welcome! I'm a, "newbie" on this thread and the advice is very supportive.

Hally: Thanks for the info on, "aerobic and anaerobic" exercise. Yesterday we had our,"Easter" dinner and I had some chocolate and a piece of lemon meringue pie. This morning woke up feeling guilty. At 5:30pm. I will go to the gym for a weight lifting class!

Thank goodness everyday is a new day and we can try to be our best once more. RIGHT?
Good workouts to all!

Finishing my 2nd liter of water after a pretty hard workout at the gym. I was in a 2+ hour union meeting after school today, so I had lots of stress to burn off. Also did 20 mintues on the elliptical.

Didn't do so well with eating today - way too much post-Easter candy lying around school on the toughest day, kid-wise, of my 6 day schedule. Start tomorrow with my dream class of 8th graders, so fewer excuses for indulging!

Ugly - I'm with the others on urging caution with the PF. It's nasty! Can you cross-train?
