Re: Weightloss Pact, Act II
Hi, Holly.

Yes, I'm in, I'm in! And I'm glad we're starting fresh from today - I was thinking that we'd be counting the past week as the first week.

I lost this past week 1.6 lbs, to mostly make up for the 2 lbs I gained over the Easter week, so I have exactly 5 lbs to go to reach my goal. But it could get tricky because I now have only 5 weeks to go until the Ottawa marathon, so I'm going to have to be careful about not depleting my energy before I run. If I could even just lose 2-3 before the 24th, and then lose the last 2-3 after the marathon, that would work, too. Holly, I know you were in the same position before your marathon - did you find cutting back on your calories made you less energetic?

The good weather is finally coming here in New Brunswick, Canada, which is encouraging. Up until last night, we were running in snow, freezing rain, and winds - there doesn't seem to be any end to the winter weather this year. Today is 6 Celsius (about 43 F), and that's considered nice and toasty for us right now! But tomorrow is supposed to be 17 C (around 63F), so we'll be just about ready to take off the toques and the heavy mitts!

Happy running and good eating, everyone.

Karen

Re: Weightloss Pact, Act II
"NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN" I'm still hovering between 4-5lbs lost in round 1. I've got to get down 5 more at least. start at 171-172

ksrunr
skinnier already!

edited to add this: On a news spot this week on the radio an author said this. The only weigh to lose weight is to eat right and lift weights. Aerobic excericise does NOT cause weight loss and in fact kills the body. I'm not buying it or the book. However, I ran 60 miles last week (most in over a year and a half) and lost no weight and did not notice an appreciably larger calorie intake. I dunno

Re: Weightloss Pact, Act II
I am in, weight 188 pounds. need to get down 180 pounds before bayshore marathon. The author is right about the weight training, though that is the fastest way to lose weight running will help you maintain your weight, but makes you hungrier so you want to eat more. According to my trainer
the weight training keeps your metabolism working all the time so you burn calories even while you sleep. My weight was down to 184 last week but I didn't stick to my diet very well. Would like to get down to 170 eventually.

Re: Weightloss Pact, Act II
Thanks for your reply, Holly. I think I'll follow a similar strategy for the next few weeks and see how it goes. I think that in the weeks between my 20-milers, I'll try to stick to 1600 cals per day, but on the weeks with the 20-milers, I'll make sure I have more, especially in the last day or two before the long run. I run right after work, so I've been trying to have a fairly large lunch, and then go lighter at night.

Re: Weightloss Pact, Act II
Thanks, Holly. The only time we run early in the day is long run day on the weekend, so in that case, I agree, I'll have a good supper the night before and a good breakfast. It's interesting about women and carb-loading. I eat lots of carbs, anyhow, so I don't usually try to eat any more before a long run. Our coach has always advised us to do any carb-loading two days before a long run or marathon, and then to eat more lightly the day before so that our body doesn't feel weighted down and bloated.

Re: Weightloss Pact, Act II
I guess I'm in... more for the "wiggle room" factor than losing 5 lbs. I was actually at my "goal" weight this morning (135) but more related to not eating much due to stress... I don't do well when others around me are hurting and I can't do anything about it. Kids have been sick, horse is lame and not expected to recover, car needs brake work (ok, that I can do something about!) and DH has been out of town. Sum that up to quick weight loss. But, I'm a "fair weather eater" and things should improve soon (kids well, brakes get fixed, DH home tomorrow night) so I'm sure I'll pack a little back on if not careful.

Karen, I agree with Holly that the carb loading doesn't seem to work for women. I never understood what the big deal about it was but guys I k now swear it works. Go figure. Also, I run after work and find I need a good breakfast, mid-morning snack, lunch then mid-afternoon snack timed to 2 hrs or so before my run. Then I'm good to go. Miss any of that and I'm toast. Dinner should be lighter than it usually is, but I'm hungrier in the early part of the day rather than later.

Ksrunr, I don't agree with the author of that book, but like anything there's some truth to what it says. I lost a lot of weight doing cardio AND weight training. When I upped mileage and dropped WT, I gained some but I do believe a lot of that was water weight from glycogen storage. I don't think it was mostly fat. I also find though that if I run consistently over 40 mpw, I can eat quite a bit. I eat more than many people I know...

Gordon and Mary, Hi! (I like Friday weighings better, too...)
