Cov Memorial Park 5 RR

How many races have you run where the walkers are weaving in and out of the runners? The Cov 5 miler is one of them. Very strong walking contingent usually led out by a GB team. Having snapped her jaw back into place after being overtaken by a possy of walkers, I told my friend Alex to just 'humble' herself and get on with it. We hit mile 1 at just over 8 minute pace and eased up a little as this was a little quick. The undulations on this course are a little sneaky in places and they come on gradually. Hit miles 2 and 3 at 8.25 & 8.30ish and now getting into our stride. Reel in a couple of runners but no walkers, they're well ahead Coastwalker, you'd love this race! Feel the ascent at mile 4 and I tell Alex to go on ahead. Then nice down hill bit so try and relax my shoulders and lengthen my stride. It feels great to have gravity on my side and I cruise down this stretch and then attack the rise on the other side. Legs feel great but my breathing is starting to labour (that's 25 years of smoking for you!) Turn the last corner and the final 400yds are flat. Concentrate on trying to relax and lengthen again. Pass a guy and kick for the finish. I know I'm seconds from a PR but so what, it's not a goal race and I still knock 2.18 off last year's time so I'm well chuffed. I finish in 42.20 and Alex in 41.39.

It felt good to wake the bod up over this distance having concentrated on the longer distances over the last couple of months. I have no real time goals for my shorter races over the next couple of months. Now's the time for fun racing before knuckling down to the marathon training later in the summer. Thanks for reading.

Those race walkers are pretty amazing.

However, dropping 2:18 from last year's time is pretty amazing too!

Most excellent!!!

Race walkers are cool. I have a friend who is a race walker who goes at about my pace, so we train together frequently.

Nice to have shaved 2.18 too! Sounds like you're going to have a great season.

You should be well-chuffed, Elaine. Great work. I agree with you, you've got to mix some fun stuff in too -- well, of course, it should be fun ALL the time, but I think you understand what I mean.

What? No food or beer apres race? No marmite sarnies?

and no malt loaf either?

Nice racin' Elaine! I got a nice chuckle over your friend being overtaken by a "possy of walkers." How the heck do they move so fast? I like your idea of not having any time goals for your shorter races. Just go and enjoy!

Elaine, congratulations on a great race and shaving over 2 minutes off last year's time. Wow, those are certainly some fast moving walkers. Usually the runners are complaining about slow walkers but it sounds like the opposite during this race!

Elaine! Well Done

You don't half move and you are the first woman I have heard mentioning gravity being on their side

Seriously though, you have taken to this running like a duck takes to water and you are a flier aswell. You just keep improving.............
Undulating? Yeah right, as BAP say's, over here undulating, is hilly.

Nice One

Very nicely done, Elaine! And what stands out to me ... you were a smoker for 25 years and are now a runner! Congratulations kicking the habit, and on your improvements as a runner. cj

Re: Cov Memorial Park 5 RR
You'll find out when you get back into marathon training that these shorter distance races will really improve your marathon time. All endurance training can slow you, so this was a great effort. Over 2 minute PR is definitely chuff-worthy. Spareribs
