5k fun run to start the season

This was a classic fun run on a flat out and back course on a newly refurbished bike path. The race featured a fairly large turnout for mid-week, with 400+ registered entrants, and at least 30% of those seemed to be kids 15 or under. My 12 yr old son was just going to watch and hang out, but last second decided to jump in. He was disappointed in his debut 5k the other day, finishing 6 minutes behind your younger brother will tend to do that, and I guess he wanted make up some time.

After a hectic first mile (police car sirens, finding position against some fast starters, and taking in some insults from smart-*** teens on bikes) I kept a very even rhythm and took 3rd OA in 17:47. There were no splits, but between the start, turn-around, and back my pace was exact. Almost caught 2nd at the end but without any speedwork under my belt I didn't want to blow a gasket or bust a nut or anything so just kept an even effort to the chute, to finish 3 sec back.

The most exciting thing my son's run. I was so surprised to see him sign up. He ran about 2:45 faster than the other day and he wasn't even wearing running shoes or shorts. Most importantly, he did it on his own, was glad he did, and said he had fun out there. I couldn't be a happier runner.

That's great Roger! I saw your time on the sheets and thought that was pretty good. Ben sure is fast... need someone to challenge that guy! I didn't do this race this year but got some itchy "should've done it" feelings when I picked up my son. Last year I had such a problem with running into strollers, walkers 4 abreast, kids all over, etc on the return trip I thought heck with it. Looked like fun though! That's so cool about your son. I love it when they surprise you like that.

Wow, now that's fast! Congrats on a fine race with your son too. Better check Nordic's I.D. to make sure he's a boomer!

Well we already know you're fast, but congrats on the OA place, and well done. What is neat here is how your son wanted to do this with no prodding from you. That is always the best way and you have every right to burst with pride to see him give it a shot. I hope you and the family have more of these events to share. Spareribs

Sounds like a great season starter for you! You ran an amazing time and showed good self control at the end. Too bad for the start issues, the taunting from those dimwits must've been annoying. Not enough to spoil the great day, though... Congrats on the OA placement.

that's what I liked too about those liberating spring/summer Alaska races after being wrapped around in skins and furs all winter.
