4.2 mi rr.

This was my second year of running the Helen Driscoll Memorial Race in Medford, MA. Last year it there was wind driven rain. This year the weather was perfect, 60's, east wind.

The race raises money for a local Alzheimer's Day Center and the route goes from a VFW hall, past the center and back for mucho food. I love the community feel of this race. It's always the Sat before M's Day.

Before the race I met Mary T and Louise who've run every Tufts 10K and great role models. I also met Doug, who runs for his MIL who uses the center. Doug's knees are beat up but he is very up beat.

It was a fun race. After 2 mi Doug, Jack, Mary T and I jocked for position. Doug and Mary razzed each other continually. Mary is 69 and had knee surgery this winter. She's kept in fabulous condition doing lots of fast walking. She asked how old I am and I made the mistake of truthfully saying 64. Mary mostly walked, but from that point on she made sure I was behind her. Whenever I'd get close she'd run a few steps. Walking or running, her legs are powerful It was so much fun to have the company and especially a rabbit and of course she finished in front.

Afterward Guy Noir (who walked the course) and I had burgers and yummy desserts..

Re: 4.2 mi rr.
nowor, it sounds like a great day. The weather made up for last year, it was for a good cause, and you got to run with some inspirational friends. It's neat to have people spur each other on. Congratulations to you and your friends.

Re: 4.2 mi rr.
sounds like a great run nowor, and a lot of fun with friends and for a good cause! congrats.

ps - on race day a good strategy is that you are always 5 years younger than your true age... this really really messes with your competitors' heads

A good time out with friends, you cant beat that even if it does get a little competative. Great run nowor and for a good cause too. The 'mucho food' bit appealed to me!

You did good nowor. I don't know if Mary T was pulling you're leg. I believe she's actually 59. Sounds like you had a lot of fun.

Now'r - You're so sweet to let the older gal sneak in ahead of you. I wish more runners would do it for us though and, whatever our ages, you'll be ahead of me 'cause I'm a ladies-first runner no matter what.

Cute story about Mary. Well, good for her too, especially coming off surgery. Glad the weather was better for you than last year. Sounds like you had a good time. Congrats. cj

I need to remember to be 'upbeat' when my knees are feeling 'beat up'. Congrats on a great race! I can smell the burgers from here.

Re: 4.2 mi rr.
This sounds like lots of fun! And I liked the part about the walker coming in ahead of you (it's happened to me more than once). The social part of the event is often the most fun for me, and I could see you enjoying jockeying for position with the others. Race more; I like your reports!
