Heart Rate Monitoring

What is a good Heart rate for a long slow distance run?

what is a good Heart rate for a tempo run?

Would the same heart rate apply for cycling.

Re: Heart Rate Monitoring
I dont know the answer to those questions; I'm kinda curious about it myself...but I was wondering if anyone has one of those watches with the heart rate monitor and the distance shoe tracker?
With Christmas around the corner, my husband wants to know what I want and I think the best thing he could get me is that complete set. (all 3) at least the watch and the shoe tracker thing. Does anyone know if this product works good and is it worth the $200?

I had an ad I had kept somewhere about it but I cant find it to let you know the name brand etc, so lemme know if anyone has any suggestions. thanks, tia

Re: Heart Rate Monitoring
I believe Nike now makes a watch that uses a GPS to tell you how far you ran and a HR monitor. I've heard good things about it. Personally I run on a track or measured courses so I only need an HR monitor that can take splits. I have the Polar AccurreX and it works well for me but needs to be sent in for a battery replacement at least once a year. My Timex HR monitor / watch had a battery go dead quickly too.

Re: Heart Rate Monitoring
Everyone is different for an appropriate HR when distance running or cycling or tempo run. The book titled The Triathlete's Training Bible explains a method for determining what HR to run a tempo at and also it explains that cycling HRs are lower than running and swimming HRs are lower than cycling. I like to run my tempo runs at a pace rather than an HR. I add 30 seconds to my 5K race pace and do 2-3 miles at that pace. You always want to keep your HR below your lactic threshold. For me, that point is about 172 bpm. When I am out of shape I would be running way to slow to stay under 172 so it'll go to 180 but I know eventually I will be in the right zone. A lot of people who train very scientifically would disagree with running a tempo where I go over my LT for the second half of it, but I can't stand to run that slow regardless of the good advice.

Re: Heart Rate Monitoring
I've just completed a Heart Zones heart rate training course and learn a lot about training with HR monitors. www.heartzones.com This website also has the latest products. I purchased a Timex Bodylink HR monitor & Speed & Distance system. $299 Everyone's HR zone is different. This course helped me identify my own zone. The old 220 minus your age is obsolete. I encourage you to check this website out. There are other HR monitors on the market too.

Re: Heart Rate Monitoring
I was just given the Polar S625x and it has the attachment for your shoe and then you can purchase additional parts for your bike. I have not used it yet b/c I can't figure it out BUT I hope to sit down and tackle it soon.

I use the Timex Body link setup which has the GPS and data recorder along with the heart rate monitor and watch that lets you know the information at a glance I bought it out of Cleveland Ohio and Als gift shop, he is the cheepest and very honest as well with excellent service and fast and it all came to around 250 Dollars as otherwise it would have been over 350 dollars or more, it works very well as I have had two heart attacks and need to know where my heart rate is. Hope this helps he has a web site which is how I found it and bought it through.
Good Luck and Happy Christmas David (Meisterbreif)

BE CAREFUL SPENDING ON GPS. KNOW IF IT WILL WORK RUNNING NEAR TALL BUILDINGS OR TALL TREES.
