Advice for Catfish July 2006 in Cupertino, CA??

Does anyone have some advice for the Catfish swim in Cupertino on Saturday July 22nd (I think that's the date)

I've done a couple of sprint tri's before (longest was .6 mile) but I haven't done this distance. I plan to do the 1.2 mile swim. I haven't swam in a wetsuit in the past so hopefully that will help get me to the end!

Has anyone swam in this event? How's the water (I hear it has a lot of algae)? Is it really competitive or a fun event? Since it's my first long-er distance swim, I would love any feedback or tips.

hi-
the Catfish is a great event. definitely fun and not very competitive. many folks use it to gage how they will do in an ironman (or half IM), so they're mostly competing with themselves. there is usually some algae, but it wasn't too bothersome. the water's warm too!

hopefully you've done some longer training than just a couple of tri sprints. um, it's quite a big difference in distance :)

have a blast!

My only recommendation is don't wear a wet suit if the water is warmer than @65 degrees because you will melt. It may take you some time to get your stroke warmed up but you will appreciate it in the end. Nothing is worse than roasting in your own black neoprene sweat box. if you can check out the swim local at least one or 2 weeks in advance do it, than you know what the conditions are like. Good luck mate!
