Geocashing - let's talk

Okay, totally nonrunning, but this does relate to a toy many of us have, the Garmin, and it has been mentioned several times lately. Light Googling showed me enough to intrigue me. I talked about it to my son, who is excited and wants to try it, which means that I have to learn more about it. So, tell me a little about your experiences. For instance, what have you found, and what have you left, in geocashes?

Re: Geocashing - let's talk
I do a lot of trail running - and have been geocaching with my three daughters for more than two years.

A great time and I highly recommend it! To get to one particular cache we even swam a decent sized river - 60' across and over my head in depth - QUITE the adventure to swim that and then continue on to the cache and then make the same journey back.

Often caches are on trails that I regularly run, so it's a great way to introduce my daughters to the outdoors.

Re: Geocashing - let's talk
Been Geocaching since beginning of May and I am addicted.
First cache I took the Travel Bug Key to Good Health which I thought was an omen..........and then left it in a park here in Queens and took a CD music mix. The caches have all kinds of neat things, lots of stuff for the kids. Go to geocaching.com and sign up, it's free although the premium membership is worth it if you start to get into it. Your kids would love it, be sure to bring insect repellent and wear protective clothing cause some of the caches are in thorny or poisonous plants areas. Not sure if you can look people up without a premium membership but if you can it would be on your account page. My nickname is hallycat over there and I have some pictures posted too.
What I am loving is getting into parks and nature areas I would never have gone to otherwise, also finding new places to run and incorporating a run then a cache hunt into my day.
Go for it!

Geocaching is a riot. We've done a fair bit ourselves, but haven't been out yet this season.

Holly not to pick on your spelling (in the thread title), but I can never resist a good pun. . .

A good day of Geo-Cashing (sic) is when you hit Pay-Dirt!! Hee.

I keep thinking about buying a Garmin - this may put me over the edge. Hmmm....the baseball game isn't till 8 PM, leaving the entire afternoon for gadget-browsing...hmmmm.

Re: Geocashing - let's talk
I've also done a little bit with my son. We had a ball and will do more this summer. It's a great way to justify a Garmin if you don't already have one. I do remember reading someplace that the one thing you don't want to leave is happy meal toys, I guess they're a no-no. Anyone else heard this?

Re: Geocashing - let's talk
Geocaching with the kids is a great way to justify the purchase of that FR305

My tribe loves it. We've had some simple, fun, caches, and a few epic bushwhacks.

We're experimenting with my old retired Palm Pilot and an app called CacheMate to carry cache data so we can stop dragging so much paper along with us on hunts.

Highly recommended. DaveinAA, thanks for the "friend" invite. I'd be happy to tie in with any boomers - my geocaching handle is the same as my old one here.

Sally, I am using Plucker and GPX-Spinner on the Palm, might try Cachemate but those two are working fine for now. I will add you.

OK.....new education. I have never heard of this and YES, I live in the United States, and YES, I do get out of my house sometimes.

Going to have to check into this new term.

Thanks for the tip.
