Salute to Joe

I ran my first Boston Marathon 30 years ago, in 1977. That year, my brother-in-law Joe, perhaps inspired by all this running in the family, decided to take up "jogging." And then he became a real runner. And then he became quite a good runner. And first thing you know he is running more marathons and more Bostons than I have. He's mid-sixties now, still going strong.

I was with him in Boston last year; see pic.

SkipAZ has met Joe, as has arf1 and Tallrunner, and perhaps some others. You all know what a great guy he is.

Well, the point of this post is that this week I received a really nice invitation from Suzanne and Joe to attend a party at their house this Sunday. I am afraid I can't go, as he is in Claremont, CA and I am in Dallas, TX, but I wanted to share with all of you what the purpose of the party is.

On Sunday Joe will celebrate 30 years of running, WITHOUT EVER HAVING MISSED A DAY! Not one day! Imagine the dedication, the constitution, the strength you have to have to run for 30 years. He is right up there among the leaders in the country (an internet listing) in ongoing streak leaders.

I am asking those of you who wish to, to post a celebratory word or two and your own congrats for this accomplishment, and on Sunday I will email him the link to this thread. I know he will appreciate it. Spareribs

Re: Salute to Joe
Dear Joe,
I am so impressed with your running ability and your running consistency, that I named my son after you! (ha ha)

Congratulations on running well for three decades; truly an amazing feat... and I'll bet your feet are truly amazing!

Sincerely,

rose

Re: Salute to Joe
Congratulations, Joe, on your 30th Runniversary! Such a remarkable achievement. W-O-W!

Should you ever find yourself in Canada in January, be sure to give us a shout and we'll be sure to have you fitted in some of these to keep the streak going. (We'll throw in a toque or knitted hat too.)

Congratulations Joe! Many of us who started running in middle and high school wish they had never stopped. What will you must have and what an inspiration to younguns and veterans alike. Great pic of you and Ribs. You are always safe around Ribs if you can keep an eye or hand on him!

Congratulations Joe, that's a remarkable achievement. Compared to you, Cal Ripken is a slacker loser.

Wishing you all the best and many more healthy miles.

Joe, I started a bit later than you (age 56) but I hope to get in 30 good years too. Congratulations, and keep it up.

Joe, congratulations. I've been running for about the same amount of time, but not every day. You have my greatest admiration. Keep it going!

P.S. Not only 30 years of running everyday, but 30 years of Spareribs as a BIL, now THAT requires strength and stamina.

Re: Salute to Joe
Joe you are truly amazing! Next time I want to blow off my run I will think of how many days you must have thought that and didn't do it.
Nah........you probably never even thought it

PS, I offered to take Spareribs place at the party but he wouldn't tell me where you lived.

Re: Salute to Joe
me too but sometimes fewer than 10 - 12 times a year (often way fewer until I fell under the influence of SR and his boomer buddies, thank goodness he didn't tell us about you) so I'm so glad sr shared you with us as an example of what I can say running for 30 years is really like.

Sorry to ask too much, if you don't mind, but exactly how many actual total days and miles will it be as of Sunday,
how many years did you run before starting the streak?
what triggered the streak to start and when?
will you keep it going (if so what is goal) or quit/take a break now,
average daily distance,
typical daily run routes,
most run same route,
typical weekly schedule,
any special runs for special days (birthday run, Christmas, etc.),
longest/shortest,
geographical range,
any running through injuries,
bad weather,
hottest/coldest,
overcoming major personal/business conflicts or other obstacles,
biggest challenge,
solo running vs. club/partner,
memorable/famous running partners,
all 24 hours a day or just in the morning,
fastest/slowest paces in regular daily runs,
comparing fastest/slowest races for 5/10/half/full/etc. over the years,
any barefoot,
number/brand of shoes,
biggest changes in your (and running world) in 30 years, etc.;
Thank you.

sr - with one of the goddesses BF's 40 consecutive Boston Marathons probably being listed too, where is the internet streak list

thank you again.

Joe:
congrats on a HUGE accomplishment. I can't imagine 30 years without missing a day. Whenever it seems hard to get out the door, this is one more thing I can use for an inspiration.

Oh my gosh you are truly amazing!! It boggles the mind, to think of any weather, hot, cold, (and Claremont can be brutal! ) windy, and with the flu, when on vacation, national disasters, working overtime, sore muscles, Wow...wonderful!!
We had no idea Spareribs was connected with such a celebrity.
