New Charles River Run-7.5 miles

Today was the mostly flat annual Charles run of 7.5 miles along with a 5K run. It brought out about 1400 runners on a beautiful sunny morning in the high 60's.
I had run the last 2, so I wanted to compare my times (since I've been running slower and slower so far this year). Marj opted out for a 10 mile training run and would meet me at the finish. I picked up my packet yesterday afternoon at their expo and had a chance to talk to Bill Rogers who was handing out autographed pictures of himself (crossing the line at one of his Boston wins) and autographed race posters. Bill is a very friendly guy and, while others waited 'patiently' in line we reminisced abut mutual friends and races of 30 years ago.
This morning we jockeyed for a parking spot and I lined up at the back with a few other 'vintage' runners. We started out with the 5K runners and diverged at the 2 mile mark. I kept a fairly steady pace slowing down slightly on the one minor hill.
I finished 19 seconds faster than last year and 2 minutes faster than 2 years ago!
After the race there was a BBQ, but beer was available for purchase (it took place at an American Legion post). Marj and I stood around with Mary and Ted T. and Robin Travers (none the worse for her trail adventure yesterday).
Awards were one deep (traditional) for that race. But when the got to the 70+ age group (no women in that group today) the RD acknowledged all of us (I was 3rd out of 4) and even bought me a beer. All finishers in the 7.5 received an attractive medal. Unfortunately, they ran out and the back of the pack didn't get one. However, the RD, promised to send us an e-mail and buy more for those who missed out.
So, all in all, another wonderful day of road racing in New England.

What gets better than this Henry? You chat with Billy (and yes, he loves people so much that he can go on and on, but that is what makes him lovable and human).

And as you point out, as we age, we all slow. So getting a new, faster time, better than last year and the year before is huge. I am so happy for you. This has been a good year for you in running.

MaryT is one of the sharper people on this site with a great deal of running experience and knowledge, and someone I would like to meet. And of course there is our wonderful Robin, (who of course only made conversation at the party because she didn't have her cell phone! Sorry, just making a bad joke. Robin don't get mad at me.)

Thanks for sharing the story Henry. Best to Marj. Spareribs

Henrun - sounds like a wonderful day. We never have 1400 racers at one race in S. TX. I miss the excitement of that.
Congrats on such a fine run.

What did I tell you, henrun? You didn't let a couple PW's stop you from getting right back out there to give it another go, and look what happened!

And what a pleasure it must have been to top it off by chatting with Boston Billy. He was one of my idols after I took up running in the late 70's, and by all accounts a really class guy.

"So, all in all, another wonderful day of road racing in New England."

I look forward to reading about the next one.

Aha, you're back! What a great race. You got to see friends and set a new course PR for yourself. Very sweet. You are one of my inspirations, henrun and I hope to run with you again someday.

I loved reading this report. "Vintage" is such a great descriptor. You improved your time, had a chat with Bill Rogers, spent time with boomers and got a free beer. Wow! Your "class" oozes out of this report.

Well, that about says it all, doesn't it? Congrats on beating your time of 2 years ago. Great racing!

Henry
It was good to see you and Marj and Robin - we usually seem to choose different races than Robin does so it was good to see her in person. We are so lucky to be living in an area where the problem is choosing races from the multiple that are available, rather than finding races to run!

What a beautiful day and a great race! Nice flat course by the Charles, good organization, a BBQ and live music as well! Mr T chose the 7.5 miles as it was one of our designated club competition races for June while I "ran" the 5K. It's really slow coming back from knee surgery and a 5 month total layoff from running (and basically nothing aerobic because my other knee won't take cycling or even elliptical), but it's now 5 weeks since I got the OK to try some easy running, and I am finally starting to see some progress. When I had first received the OK to run I started out mixing a little running in wth mostly walking, then about 50-50, and yesterday made it all the way to 2 1/2 miles before my knee started to feel a little achy and my endurance was shot! I just don't want to take any chances with my knee so I did some walking for a while and didn't start to run again until we got into the finish area. I had hoped to make it the whole way since it's such a nice flat course, but I'm definitely getting better, so I was still happy with the race. Just one month to go and I'm in a new age group, so hopefully my running will continue to improve!

It was so much fun to spot you at the finish line festivities! Congrats on such a great race! And kudos to Marj who looked as fresh as a non-running spectator after her 10-miler!

Nice RR, Henry!
You're defying the aging process and getting faster!
Wow, so much going on in one day: Visit with Boston Billy, BBQ, good friends, and I was little worried about the "beer available for purchase", but then you eased my worries as you got a free one from the RD!
Sounds like an excellent day in Boston!

Yes, henrun, it was a wonderful day for racing. Beating your times for the last two years has to be a big upper. Chatting with Bill Rodgers and other boomers makes the day that much more special. Congratulations.

Re: New Charles River Run-7.5 miles
Great race henrun! It's very encouraging to know that we will be able to get faster as we get older.

Nice that you got to meet Bill Rogers as well. I had the opportunity to meet Kathrine Switzer in Toronto last year (she signed her book "26.2 Marathon Stories" for me). She's really the first "famous" runner I've met in person so it was quite exciting to actually chat with her for a few minutes.

Glad to hear also that you'll be getting the medal you so well deserve!

Re: New Charles River Run-7.5 miles
Hi Henry,

Congratulations on another fine race! Who were you chasing this time, if Marj went for a training run instead of racing?

So, you got to hang with Billy and some Boomers, ran a great race, earned some terrific acknowledgments from the RD, and even scored a free beer at the post-race BBQ! Now THAT's a good day!!

They were supposed to mail some awards after the NCR a few years ago (we didn't hang around because the scoring was seriously delayed), and it took some time and a reminder or two before they got them in the mail. So you may need to stay on top of the RD if you want that medal that they've promised to mail to you.

Congrats on another greta race, Henry!

Jay

Re: New Charles River Run-7.5 miles
henrun -

there's something truly different and inspiring about rr's from the center of the running universe, especially with one of the icons of the running world just like he's one of us.

Improvements with age are especially inspiring blessings out of the blue sometimes without much reason but I'm guessing gettin' to cruise with ilene might have had something to do with it.
