Tour De France

No running as I did a 12 hour MTB race last week end came 32 second out of 170 not too bad at 57. I've had a rest this week ready for tomorrow

In the morning I'm setting out on my trusty bike to go to London, not to see the Queen but to see the start of the Tour De France.

Its 100 miles down a main road and its very wet in England at the moment. Plus I have to leave early but I have no choice as I have to get there quickly to pick the keys up for my daughters flat as she's going away and she's letting me crash there for the weekend.

Tomorrow night the teams are presented in Trafalgar Square, 'its the prologue on Saturday and on Sunday my mate Lemon is racing his tricycle around Hyde Park, what excitement.

Then on Monday head back "up North" but hopefully taking a longer but more scenic route.

Re: Tour De France
Julian - I'm jealous. Wish I could ride with you and be at the start. My son is big bike racer and our TV will have all the tour on till it's over. My wife and I ride some small 50 mile tours in the hill country of TX in the summer as a break from running in the heat. Keep your trust bike away from the autos.

Re: Tour De France
That will be an incredible sight to see.

Any sense that after Landis, Basso, Ulrich etc... and all the doping stories that the sponsorship or the fans are going to turn against the Tour. There just seems to a mentality that exists in the sport that it is okay to push the limits and find ways to get around the rules to gain advantage. My son was a big Tour fan (his fav was Ulrich), but after last year, I am not sure he is going to watch this year. Is worse in cycling, or as Lance is saying their monitoring regime is the toughest, so more get caught.

Personally I am picking Vinakourov (sp), he is a monster.

Re: Tour De France
I was in London the day of the start of the Tour but didn't make it to the start. It was fun just to be there and see all things set up for it. My family and I were busy sightseeing--three museums in one day sometimes.

I tried to signup to run a 10K on Sunday at Regent Park but it was full so I missed out. I had checked online so I didn't even go. I thought it would be fun to see how runs are done "over there". I happened to see a couple wearing tshirts from the run later that day and asked how it was and they said it was very hot. At least it wasn't raining.

Re: Tour De France
Interesting with the crashes etc.. but the Tour doesn`t seem to have the sparkle for me of past years, perhaps because of the scandals. Hopefully my feeling changes as they head into the mountains etc...

Here's a video that gives the "floyd" perspective on last year`s Tour : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJnYVm4iaqc[/URL" target="_blank">

Re: Tour De France
Well this year's Tour looking like it is continuing the tradition of the Tour de Dopage. To sum up:

Floyd Landis isn't in it as he waits a decision of his case from last year's tour.
Michael Rasmussen is leading and is now favoured to win but given that he missed several tests pre-Tour there is a lot of suspicion.
Team Astana pulled out of the Tour de France after Alexandre Vinokourov, tested positive for a banned blood transfusion---after he made a Floyd like comeback from a crash to win two stages. His claim that the crash must have 'jumbled' his blood causing the results--just makes me roll my eyes.
And now there is news that another a cyclist failed a test for testosterone.
I think I am just scratching the surface, but what another disappointment. Throw Michael Vick and dog fighting, the NBA ref. and betting on basketball games, the continued discussion of Barry Bonds as he approaches Hank Aaron's home run record with a big * beside is name, and it has been very sad.

I am quickly losing people in sports to cheer for---except for Boomers of course. Tall, Pro, rungrl1, San Souci, hermosaboy, and the other Boomer speedsters: break it to me slowly: any performance enhancing substances?

Sorry, got to go take my Glucosamin.

.EDITED TO ADD: And now Rasmussen is kicked off the team and another team quits the tour...sorry the Tour de France is now the new WWE of sports. Hard not to think that the whole tour was and is dirty....and that would include Lance. It would be like saying everyone in professional wrestling uses steroids except for the champion..he just wins because he is a better wrestler.

Spankee, Tall's already admitted to PEP (Performance-Enhancing Poutine) with a chaser of maple syrup. Tsk, tsk, Tall.

Me? PIG (Performance-Improving Guinness). My not-so-sekrit pre-race bevvie.

Sounds like a national dish. I had heard of Tall's excessive creton usage. (creton--creatine: just a coincidence they sound alike: I think not)

I would have never taken you for a PIG. (Okay, maybe if I had a pig to start with) My world is completely shattered.

Re: Tour De France
I'd get that brown sauce and pasty tested, if I were you.

You have excellent points re. testing leading up to the Olympics in China.

But to me, it is a sports issue more than an issue of dictators. True, some of the worst examples have been East Germany and the Chinese swim team, but as someone from the country of Ben Johnson (from hero to zero in 9.79 seconds) it is hard not to forget that 19 American medallists were allowed to compete at various Olympic Games from 1988 to 2000 despite having earlier failed drug tests . One was Carl Lewis, who was given the gold after Ben was caught in Seoul. Lewis said in 2000: "There is no commitment to stopping the drug problem. People know the sport is dirty, the sport is so driven by records." Perhaps it is money, glory and records more than ideology that is driving it.

I love West rock boy's point: we have the broadcast of the Tour DAY France advertising the performance enhancing drug evitra as they talk about the problem of performance enhancing drugs in sports. Should we wonder, there is a problem.

I think I will skip the Glucosamine and go PIG out. Anyone want to take a blood sample, you know where I am.
