Bweep Bweep Bweep <intruder alert! > <intruder alert!>

You are supposed to be 40 + years old here (or at least 39 if you are a cute guy like millbot)

The Newbie cafe has a 30 somethings thread.

I believe the Boomer generation was born between 1946 and 1964. My oldest sister was born during the first year (1946) and I came during the last year (1964).

I found this whole thread amusing...

I was born after 1964 so technically I'm not a boomer. Shannong4 asked the question going forward, I'm going the other way. I just don't know if I fit here given the Forum's name. Am I squarely in the "and Beyond" part?

I am with you on this being amusing.....

Shannong4 doesn't match the stated dates of being born in the Boomer years of 1946 to 1964. She misses by 9 years.
She says she will...."see you in a few years". Well, if we are going to be technical.....she will ALWAYS miss the Boomer stage by 9 years because the dates are set.

That takes us to your comment Quicksilver about qualifying as a "Beyond"er. THIS has no definition.

The Boomer designation is there because of the BOOM of babies that were born between the years of 1946 through to 1964. This was a time when the world was coming out of the Second World War and the attitudes of people and conditions were ideal for having a family. As a result (to borrow a phrase) "everyone was doing it" and the result was a large increase in the number of babies born at the time.

With this increase of babies came a way of life and attitude that has worked its' way through society because of the experiences that so many of us shared at that time in history when our value systems were being formed.

So how does this apply to the Boomers and Beyond room?

Most of us who are in this age range share so many experiences and ideals, that these form a basis for what we share from our daily lives. Simply put, we have a lot in common.

MY FEELING (and I obviously speaking solely from my perspective) is that anyone feeling comfortable listening to the stories of our lives, hearing what we experience as runners, learning how our bodies at this stage react, and still they want to be involved, they are more than welcome as a part of that "Beyond" classification.

Each person knows they fit if they enjoy our conversations and the information that is shared, filled with items that reflect who we are. Some people will feel more comfortable in another room that probably exists in the Cool Running Discussion groups.

I suspect there are quite a few in our group who do not technically match the Boomer designation, but they are most welcome and fit in very well. We really are not THAT difficult to get along with.

Sooo...WELCOME.....to everyone who enjoys making "Boomers and Beyond" one of the most desired discussion rooms of this web site.

Vista is correct: 1946 to 1964 is the standard definition of a Baby Boomer.

Shannong4, if you're polite enough to phrase your post like that, you probably belong here. You are welcome here.

Re: Is there a certain age I have to be to be considered a Boomer?
This is interesting. A couple of points.

1. The "Boomer" designation is somewhat arbitrary. The actual birth rate changes don't match up perfectly with the '46-'64 period. The '46-'64 period is only one of several used by different demographers and sociologists. It's become the most popular, but there's nothing written in stone about it and some researchers reject it as not particularly useful. (I'm a '62 birth and politically, culturally, etc, have never thought of myself as the "Boomer" generation.)

2. Really, as the front page of the discussion forum makes clear, "This forum for masters and seniors focuses on training for runners 40+, offering advice and strategies for lifetime running." As time passes (and so do Boomers), the Boomer designation becomes less and less relevant. It's a masters forum for those 40 and beyond. Right now that includes those born in 1967!

I you can't read your birthday on a digital watch, you're not a Boomer. So after 12:31:59, you're out of luck.
