I'm always interested in chatting with people about their encounters with famous/favorite athletes. Had any?
Ozzie Smith was my favorite athlete I've met for a while... but I think Dot Richardson, a member of the first ever gold-medalist winning softball team in the Olympics, is my overall favorite.Love her story.
Mine was Dick Beardsley, just about 2 years ago at a cross-country meet. He lived in the town that we raced at as a team, and I got to 'talk shop' with him for a few minutes about using GPS monitors, how I use them and how he has used them. I guess it was my first real big-time 'pro' I met from just about any sport.
That's very cool. Did you learn that you used GPS monitors differently or pretty much the same?
This is one degree removed, but probably the best famous athlete story I have. My good friend from college served Michael Jordan a turkey on wheat sandwhich at Madinah's golf course when she was in high school. :P
I met Shawne Merriman when he came to watch one of our women's professional football games. He was really a nice guy and was actually very impressed I think with how good our team was. For him to come down on a Saturday night and stand on the field with us was really motivational and I believe that many of us appreciated him for that.
Once my husband and I met Julio Lugo at an Astros game. He was pitching for the Astros then! He was extremely nice and cordial. We still have the ball he signed for us!
Thanks for the great topic!
Phil Mickelson -- totally embarassing since I didn't realize who I was chatting with until later when my friend told me. Whoops! He's one of the best golfers out there.
No Way! Where were you chatting with him?
He's a long-time favorite of mine. I think it was because when I was young I saw him use this shot in a tournament successfully:
The most famous softball players I've personally met are Jennie Finch and Cat Osterman. They are very classy and very nice lady. It's always a pleasure to meet such nice people in a sport you really enjoy.

doesn't have anything to do with softball, but I met (and shook his hand) OJ and Nicole back in '84. They were atcually quite nice! She was gorgeous and he was very nice. He had HUGE hands, so I have no doubt 'the gloves don't fit"!!
I have met Phil Hansen of the Buffalo Bills, he came into the store where I work. Very level headed down to earth guy. I have also met Dick Beardsley at the opening of the running store in Fargo ND that bears his name and Candice Parker at a WNBA exhibition game in Grand Forks ND. She is a very gracious young lady.
I was teammates with Todd Helton of the Colorado Rockies for 3 years of Summer League Ball. We both played for the Knoxville Stars in Knoxville, Tennessee. Great player and great person. He was a centerfielder and I played right field.
Michele Smith. She still pitches for the women's Japan league and took first place last season. She is really a nice person and signs her autograph for all who ask. I met her at the NFCA show last year at the Rip-It booth after she did a pitching demonstration for all the college coaches.
