Oh Tet, you sure are a funny guy with your subliminal messaging and descriptions of Portland v. Bellingham. The St. John's Bridge incline is only half a mile long. A welcome respite from the flat and boring industrial district. Whereas Bellingham, remembering that I lived near there for two years, is flat for the first six miles, then it's ALL hills afterwards. I think full disclosure is required.

My first marathon will be my home marathon. I believe that's the right thing to do.

I'm jealous Tet - the Torchlight Run was one of my favorite runs in Seattle. That one and Beat the Bridge. For Torchlight, it was so much fun to finish up that last stretch coming down the parade route with all the folks that were sitting on the curb to watch the parade, cheering the runners on. Such a fun fun race!

Yes, Lab - your first marathon should be your home marathon - that is the right thing to do!

tammy -

You got that right about the Torchlight Run with 300,000 bored Seafair specators waiting for the parade to start (many since as early as 6am) cheering on each and every runner.

However, how about this one?

7/22 tetsujin - Swedish Hospital SummeRun 100K, . . . I mean 10K, Seattle.

I once spent some time there where it starts at the Swedish Hospital up on Capitol Hill and includes a one mile descent down towards Montlake and the UW and then back up again down near Broadway.

Incidentally, except when goddesses are involved, I'm a support-your-local-athletics fan too and do the Seattle Marathon no matter what (but really glad that goddesses and dromey and maybe jura along with peripatetic MM Karl will be able to join locals lynden, dove, mariposai and me in Bellingham).

Since you lived in Seattle before, we'll give you local credit too any time you can jump in the hot tub with us up here, . . . I mean join us at the Pink Door, . . . I mean come up for a run, . . . I mean all three, . . . and that goes for all boomers from everywhere, anytime.

ps - have you ever been in the hot tub on the slopes of Mt. Baker?

Labduck, don't cave to the pressure...

I agree that despite all the hype the bridge is a cakewalk. However, don't underestimate the slight incline that follows for a few miles after the bridge... that's the tougher part and right about where I begged for my Boomer hug last fall.

Tet -- think I may join you for the Torchlight Run. I just haven't gotten in the biking I'd hoped to do before the Bellingham duathlon that a.m. I've done this du the past two years and would be annoyed with myself if I didn't do better on the bike after improving last year.

Re: B & B Intrepid Racers - July 14 & beyond!
My running life was so short lived when I lived up there and there are just so many great races! I lived there for almost 10 yrs and it was only during the last year or so there that I discovered running. I felt like so many years were wasted {sigh} I have not heard of that Swedish run - but based on your description, I know the route. I lived near the U Village (70th and Sandpoint to be exact), and Swedish is where I had my son, so that route is familiar as I made many doctor visits to and from that area.

No, never visited the hottub at Mt. Baker. I'm not a skiier - so never have even been to Mt. Baker.

Ah, Tetsujin, you are a charmer! I have decided to keep things very simple this fall. Unfortunately, that also means I won't be at the 20 mile aid station for others -- which was a total blast last year.

thank you econodaisukisensei. we're already planning something special at the Pink Door (and elsewhere you know where if you can stay a little afterwards, . . . with as many as possible econo-sisters okay!) in your honor not only for your Portland Run but for so much you did for us all (and especially me i-owe-you-for-the-rest-of-my-life) in making the our inaugural Eugene Marathon so fantastic. I hope you can take SR to the Amazon Trail (but don't tell him about the boas and piranhas).
