Re: friday the 13th (!) july boomer runs
Early run but late posting today... A really nice, cool morning, and I experimented with some LHR training, so ran 6 miles while trying to keep my HR at about 125. Being cool probably helped, but my slow-and-easy pace came out at 9:45, which is about 30 seconds slower that I would usually do that distance. But it sure was some easy running!

Gotta run to give a presentation for my work group -- good runs to all and good luck as always to the weekend racers!

Re: friday the 13th (!) july boomer runs
Good morning, all. I don't usually post here but I must say that I am a little nervous about tomorrow morning's barefoot 50K trail run. The furthest I have ever ran barefoot was 40 miles but that was on asphalt. It's the same Psycho WyCo course that I ran in February but that was only a 10 mile trail run.

Should be interesting.

Thanks for letting me vent.

Rick

Re: friday the 13th (!) july boomer runs
Good Morning Boomers!

WRFB ? 11 miles before work, and that?s low intensity? You are one tough cookie. I?m with Susan ? that would put me into a serious nap state by mid-afternoon.

Rick - good luck! I don't envy your feet, though. I've seen pictures of the state they get in after those long trail runs.

I don?t usually run on Fridays, but DH and I went out for a fancy dinner last night (grandma took the kids to Shrek 3) so I feel the need to burn off a few thousand extra calories. I settled for about 550 with a 6.5-mile gentle-paced run (10:20). Don?t want to overdue it with a 20-miler scheduled for Sunday.

About halfway through my run, a large pit bull/boxer-type dog suddenly came tearing out into the street at me at top speed. I skidded to a stop and tried to veer out of its way, but only slightly deflected the impact of 150-lbs of dog plowing into my right knee with its shoulder, very nearly knocking me off my feet. The woman owner of the dog, standing on her porch, said, ?Oh, he just wants to play.? I stared at her, speechless, since the only things that came into my mind to say to her were decidedly unladylike, and limped off while she got her giant dog into the house. Grrr?

Driving down to Cincinnati for lunch and a sightseeing cruise on a riverboat.

Happy Friday!

Holly, the dog will continue to want to play until either you or the owner provide some behavior correction.

Kicking is effective - try for the head, if you can. Otherwise the ribs are a tender area. Do NOT be gentle. - try to kick through the dog You are trying to stop a dangerous habit.

An 18 inch piece of broomstick is also useful. Apply firmly to anything within reach.

Also, call the police and report the incident. They will usually contact the owner and explain consequences of any future incidents.

Re: friday the 13th (!) july boomer runs
Good morning friends. I am getting ready to make the drive back home from my friend's house where I had the funnest "slumber party" in recent years (with pellow fighting, toe nails painting, belly dancing and all, well... there were a glass or two of a fruity merlot there too.). But the greatest and most unbelievable fun was when my friend told me that she had a surprise for me, with that she left the room and when she returned she asked me to close my eyes. When I was directed to open them again, I saw her in running gears and with a big smile on her face she ask me: ready for run my dear?... I could not believe her since she is not, repeat not a runner at all. I guess she has been training for almost 3 months for this surprise for me.

Since I did not have my running shoes with me or any running gear, I had no other choice but to run in the shoes I was wearing, the pink thongs. We ran a 3 mile loop in 47 minutes, but we ran the whole way. I am so proud of my friend since this was the first time she was able to run the whole way thru, and this was my first 3 miler in thongs since childhood.

With the intense heat we are expected to have around here tomorrow I am reconsidering my participation in the 10 mile trail run.

Re: friday the 13th (!) july boomer runs
Got up stretched. Ran my scheduled zero miles. Hmm, maybe time for a nap? Yawn . . .

About the dog: Absent an attack by it I am not sure I would hit it. If a large dog like that decides to fight back rather than run away it could do some serious damage. On the other hand, a few good threats to the owner along with a report to the police seems in order here. At the very least there should be enough documentation to allow for a potential lawsuit. People with untrained pet somehow figure out how to control them when not doing so might become costly to them rather than some innocent stranger. I get apoplectic about this topic because I was repeatedly attacked as a kid when I road my bike by one particular house. (I had no choice it was on my dead end road.) It took forever (read many actual and attempted bites to me and my friends) for the local legal system to finally force the owners to pen the thing up.

Re: friday the 13th (!) july boomer runs
QUOTEOriginally posted by moosie65:
what should I look for in trail vs road shoes (and should I post this in a different area )

moosie - for sure post on the ultra board but describe the kind of trail (single-file, twisting, etc.), terrain (flat, steep/mountainous, etc.) and running surfaces (packed dirt, rocky, gravel, etc.).

In the meantime, good trail shoes have very thin soles to allow almost instantaneous proprioreception and recovery from possible twisting, slippage, etc. Cushiony heels are vebotem. Check with Barefoot Rick re perfectly instantaneous proprioreception and virtually injury-free running.

Incidentally, are you running to stay in shape for skiing or anything like that?

do you like moose too? don't let Spareribs see your prophile foto; he might get eaten.

Rick - I'll be thinking of your soles during my three laps around Lake Young in thongs, aquasocks, and jika-tabi. I'll be able to take 'em all off for a couple of miles too.
{{{rick's soles}}} - good luck.

thongaposie - uhm, .. . could you be in charge of accommodations and activities for this year's Seattle Pink Door Festival and Marathon?

holly - please call up the police/animal shelter and ask what you should do. It's not about you, it's about the little kid who might have been killed.

rest day for me.

Holly- your dog problem is right up my alley. Call your local animal control and report it to them.I am not sure what their policy will be.In something like this our animal control would need to make contact with you to make the complaint agaisnt the dog owner.
