If you RACE and like to meet Boomers......

There are many positive aspects of this Boomer and Beyond forum association.

1. Learning from each other....being able to ask questions
2. Encouraging other runners when they are needing it
3. Sharing our running stories
4. Accountability of miles and goals....staying on target
5. Reading race reports and learning from them
6. Friendships that develop between us
7. Reading about various life situations of others
8. The occasion jokes, pranks, etc in the daily threads
9. Racing
10. Meeting other Boomer runners

One of the surprise fun aspects for me has been the occasions when I have been able to meet others who are on this web site, at races during the year. It is always fun to put a "face" to the names we have in here.

I think all of us were wishing we could have been at Boston, either to run or even to be a part of the support group along the Marathon route. The other associated meals for that group was made extra special just because there were "several" of our group there.

Here is my thought here.......

It would be fun to TARGET various race locations as official Boomer meetings. This would vary from year to year so that hopefully a targeted race would be near you at one time or another. There seems to be natural "pockets" of runners where there already exists a number of our group and these can be built upon. My thoughts here are to target ONE race a year and give it this special identity. Then as many as possible could plan to attend.

Right now I see good target locations coming from:
1) New England
2) Central East Coast (VA, NC, TN)
3) Pacific Northwest (including BC)
4) Canada Central (ON, PQ)
5) Midwest (MI, OH, IN, IL)

Anytime we have 5 Boomers registered for a race location, this has the potential for a good gathering. Right now there are 5 races on the race board where this exists:
1) Crim .....................Flint,MI....Aug 25.....7 registered
2) Bellingham Bay......Wash......Oct 7....... 6 registered
3) Hartford Mar......... .Conn.......Oct 13..... 7 registered
4) ING...................... NYC....... Nov 4....... 5 registered
5) Richmond............. VA......... Nov 11...... 5 registered

History says that Boston, Chicago, and Knoxville will also have a good number of us register when the time comes.

It would be fun to attempt to have a support table on the race route (like the good people in Boston did) for any race where there are significant numbers of Boomers running.

There are neat things that can be done when someone in the local area does some preparations as host. Pie Jones went "beyond the call of duty" in Knoxville to give those of us attending that race a wonderful experience. I know others do similar things in other locations as well.

To identify in the daily thread when a race location has reached a registration of 5 of our people will help us in planning, and I intend to do that.

I simply wanted to throw these thoughts out. Give me feed back, your suggestions, your thoughts, etc. I don't want to make this a huge responsibility on anybody, but instead would like to organize our forum in this area to make our friendships stronger and our race schedules even more meaningful.

Racing is tiring and painful. And then there's all the training you have to do.

I'm really more interested in the hot tub parties, especially the ones where attire is improper or offensive.

Vista -- I think that is a wonderful idea!! You are quite correct about Knoxville...Pie went out of his way to make us feel at home. We had a blast and I encourage other Boomers to sign up for Knoxville in 2008!

We are having a full and half marathon on 11/4 in Raleigh if any Boomers are interested.

I look forward to seeing how this goes!

Vista,
This is a lovely and wonderful posting. I met my first group of Boomers in Hartford two years ago and it has led to several other meetings and races. All wonderful expericiences.

DH - you are the best!

Really good initiative, vista! Be happy to help out in any way.

BTW - I'd like to add to your top 10 list. My observation is that Boomers really help and support each other during injuries and down time. We all go through 'pain' at some point and the support and advice here is great.

What a great movement Vista. Knoxville was a blast and since our DD lives there, the chances of us doing it again are excellent. I only wish everyone got the same start at the dinner as the natchos were devistated by the time we arived and Tom White definitely was hogging all the beer. Piejones could also have been nicer had he run next to me with an umbrella!!!

Hope to see you all there again this year.

Good running all,
Jim and Vicki

Re: If you RACE and like to meet Boomers......
Right on Vista, I knew that you would come up with a priceless idea on how to post this thread after the fun chat you, PieJones and I had on the topic in the chat room the other night. (Thank you Mustang Sally for creating the wikipedia for us boomers)

My first encounter with the Boomers's support team was in Eugene this year (I was in Portland last year, but was too shy to go to the dinner or to stop by at the support table). My experience in Eugene showed me what a bunch of fun loving, nice looking a crazy group of people we all are in this thread and of course that has changed my view of running and racing as well.

I am speaking here for myself and at the same time volunteering a certain barefoot boomer to serve as a co-host with me for the Belligham marathon. Tet will gather all lodging information a-la-Econo and Tammy; plan all pre and post run activities and will purchase pink thongs for all the goddesses who show up. I, on the other hand will take care of all the boomer gods.

Once again, thanks Vista. And I hope that you and PieJones do come to run Bellingham with us.

Thank you happy birthday posie. I thought we're supposed to be givin' you the presents. I'll check with my cousin and see if they have any Pink Doors or equivalents up there (and, of course, hot tub hotels).

Re: If you RACE and like to meet Boomers......
Thanks for posting this. You're right that the Crim is a good chance for a Boomer meeting, and some of us did meet there for the first time last year, but so far this year we're running at a goddess level of zero! What's that all about?

Let's get a turnout from all our Michigan group!

Re: If you RACE and like to meet Boomers......
Having gone to three boomer gathering type races (portland eugene and the Avenue), I must say that if you get the opportunity to meet up with others at these races, please do so! They are always so much fun and really add a whole new enjoyment factor to running races/marathons.

However, I hate to see DH so lonely over in the corner there. I think I'll go cheer him up.

Wonderful idea, Vista! Thanks for initiating this!
Please make it 7 for Bellingham, I am planning to be there, although I haven't registered yet, not knowing what distance to tackle yet...
