boomer/noobies 7/16

Hey guys!

I've been mia, but still running. 26.6 miles last week, 5 miles this morning. So humid.

Laurie - saw your other post. Glad you're questioning the experts. Hear them. FWIW, I run 5 days a week, but take an extra day off every now and then and just run 4. I wonder, too, if you're going all out every time, or almost every time, you run. The veteran runners will give you a more reliable answer, but my understanding is this: if you run 5 days a week, one run might be long, one run might be fast (tempo or intervals) and the rest would be moderate, normal, easy, etc. It does sound like you need more rest.

Mike - 10 miles you say?!?! You just slipped that in. Please elaborate!

Linda - wow! You're doing great! So pleased for you! Woo hoo!

Eliz - WTG on the sailing test! You've got some real skills there!

Kevin, hope your aches and pains have resolved with rest.

Deb, how goes everything? Thanks for asking about ds. He is much better than a couple of weeks ago, and I'm pretty happy about it.

Kimble - you are officially MIA! Hope all is going well.

Re: boomer/noobies 7/16
Home again for two nights to do some errands - hair cut, allergist, pay bills, stuff like that.

Wow, running is harder than sailing! I took a whole week off from running for sailing class. Went out with the intention of doing 3 miles Sunday morning to get back on track with the 10K plan. Made it 2 and wasn't hurting miserably, but enough that I thought it wise to be kinds to my joints and walk the last mile. Felt great in terms of cardio, but my hips, knees, and ankles were not happy. Will stretch and do ankle and quad strength exercises tonight and attempt to get back on track with 3 miles tomorrow. (In hilly Pennsylvania rather than on the flat boardwalk - yikes!)

Paddled almost 2-1/2 hours this morning and, happily, that felt great. Started out with almost no wind - the bay was like glass - BEAUTIFUL. Intended to ride the tide back in, but when I got to the farthest point from the put-in, the wind came whipping out of the north (opposite of the tide and of where it usually comes from), so it was a long slog back.

Hope everyone's week is off to a greta start! Eliz

Re: boomer/noobies 7/16
Hello Everyone,

Jem, Glad to see you back. Yes, I did 10 miles on Saturday. It's part of my "get ready for the half on labor day" program. However, I felt so bad by the time I finished that I figured I needed to take a couple of days off to recover. I think I figured out what went wrong though. I have a couple more chances to get 10 in before labor day. Most of the training plans I have seen only have you running up to 10 miles in order to get ready, so I think I am right on schedule. I am still no where near your weekly mileage though. I admire the work you put in each week.

Laurie, I am really looking forward to that half in Phoenix too. DS2 is moving there in 2 weeks. I am not ready for that though.

Debbie, Wed afternoon. Let me know when and where. I hope abby is doing OK

Linda, did I read the daily thread correct that you are rindaroo too? Maybe I should come up with an alter ego. Hmmmmm.

Eliz, I am glad that your summer is going well.

Anyone seen Kimble? Who else are we missing?

Peace Everyone.

Re: boomer/noobies 7/16
Is this a good place to introduce myself as a boomer who is new to running? I've been hanging out in the Newbie Cafe but figured I might fit in here. I just started in week 4 of the c25k program.
Some data, I'm going on 52, used to run at the marathon level. I ran 4 marathons and several halfs, my best marathon was right at 4 hours even. Gout put an end to my running but now I desperatly need to get fit and healthy. My last marathon was in 1996 and I quit running and everthing else active shortly after that. My gout is now under control with medication but I never got back into running.
I live on the Central Coast of California in Santa Maria, married with two grown kids. I just married the last one off so we're empty nesters now!

Re: boomer/noobies 7/16
Welcome Ken! Good for you getting back to running

Mike - 10 miles! you are doing great!! Yes I'm rindaroo too, my original name on CR was Rindaroo, but I changed it to Live and Learn awhile ago, because I was having so much trouble with the asthma and running, it reminds me to pay attention to the lessons along the way, you know living & learning.. Rindaroo is more my "fun" name, a nickname given to me by my DH early on. Sometimes you'll see people call me rinda, rindaroo etc it makes me smile so, I'm feeling more like rindaroo right now, but don't wanna jinx it yet.

Thanks everyone, yes it feels great to be running again. But really I'm only doing what I can do & no more. Increasing a little bit at a time.. I have a ways to go on the endurance, so am taking it slow. Today is a rest day, & during the week will be on the treadmill, so less mileage & on the weekend, we'll see what happens just like last weekend.

Where are you Kimble????

Re: boomer/noobies 7/16
Struggled through 3.1 sweaty, hilly miles in PA this morning. Amused myself by mentally listing the good things about running at home vs. the good things about running at the shore. Home: can start and end right at my front door; shade; bunnies; quiet; asphalt is pretty even under my feet. Shore: less pollen; cooler due to ocean breezes; FLAT (but bumpy) boardwalk; dolphins; other runners to say "hi" to; great view of the ocean. So, I guess the conclusion is that I'm pretty darn lucky to be able to run at all and to be able to run in two such nice places. (Hasn't this summer vacation just done wonders for my formerly snarky attitude?)

Laure - Kala Puka - LOVE IT!!! What a great name for a boat, a house, whatever costs as much to keep as to purchase. I will keep it in mind for my future sailboat - will definitely have to write it down, though, as said purchase is many years in the future.

Mike - if you're thinking of trying sailing some day, I can't say enough about the professionalism and friendliness that I experienced at JWorld in Annapolis. They have other branches - Key West, Newport, San Diego, San Francisco - all pretty wonderful places to hang out and do fun things like sailing. I have a fantasy of doing a course at Key West over winter break some year. Hey, great job on the 10 miles - you're doing a half over Labor Day? AWESOME! I'm due for a 10-miler in about 4 weeks in my 10K training plan.

Jem - you ran a marathon last week, and a little more.

Deb - love the sailor graphic! Thanks for hunting it down. How's the puppy? I may be in the same situation with my dear kitty Lucia soon - she's almost 15, diabetic, hyperthyroid, and well into her 9th life. All 9 have been pretty wonderful both for her and the family that spoils her, but it's going to be sooooo hard to let her go.

Linda - glad to hear the new mix of meds is helping. As soon as I cross the Delaware River back into PA, I seem to be reminded that, no, my allergies aren't under control. In fact, one of the reasons I'm home today is to get my shots and renew my meds.

Ken - welcome to the board. I'll be the phantom poster for the next several weeks, as I spend most of the summer at the Jersey shore with intentionally limited internet access. My winter home is in the Philly suburbs, but my heart lives next to the ocean all year 'round. "Central Calif. coast" sounds beautiful, even if it is that other ocean. Congrats on getting back to running - if you've done 4 marathons (wow!), you'll do great with C25K - it's a wonderful program. Please keep us posted on your inevitable progress.

Got my official letter from HR saying that I have a contract for the fall, but still no clue about what I'll be teaching. Off to school to remind the principal that I'd like to start some lesson planning soon and to hopefully get a clue what classes I need to plan for.

Byeeeee!

Re: boomer/noobies 7/16
Hi Ken, welcome to Boomers. I was of running for a number of years like you though for different reasons. Used to run marathons. I am back to running my 3rd year now and getting to marathon shape has been slow going, hopefully I will run my first in years this December in Las Vegas. It is great that your gout is under control and you will be able to start getting active again. Larry

Re: boomer/noobies 7/16
Welcome Ken. I am jealous of your location! I love CA especially the central coast. Its becoming a popular destination lately. Good luck with your runs. Keep us posted.

Eliz, I am also jealous of you spending summers on the coast!

Wow. I was just looking up some sea kayaking classes for Mass when DD1 called and said she was in a car accident. Poor kid. Thank God she is fine. The car is a different story though.

L+L, glad youre back to running. Its inspiring. Keep us informed.

Mike, Yep I am still on for AZ in January. Provided I can get over my current slump. I am taking more break days now as advised by the board. My break days will be some sort of easy mild sport like a few laps in my pool out back or a quick racquetball game with DD3.

I found another awesome run today. Mapped out a 3, 4, 5, and 6 mile run in Robinson State park. Great place. Shaded 100% even in midday. No traffic. Hardly any people. My choice of trails or roads. A small beach with nice looking lifeguards. Along a river. Its perfect. Had a lame slow 4 mile run today there but at least I didnt bonk again. I made it without stopping or hurting so I cant complain.

Kim and I are signed up for a 10k in August. Shelbourne Falls bridge of flowers classic. Sounds like fun.

Laurie

Re: boomer/noobies 7/16
Greetings from Fredericksburg. I'm on a business trip down here. haven't been out on a run, but will probably do it on a TM, as it's 95 at the moment and isn't supposed to go below 75. Hey Jem--just realized--I'm closer to you than normal. I see what you mean about the humidity! If things work out and I don't have to work too late, I may actually get to meet Tramps--he lives the next town over.

Deb--have you changed? There's a dg12 posting??

eliz--thanks for stopping in remember hills are your friends. sailing sounds like fun.

can we call you Rind and Rearn? (although I have a thought that it was used previously)

Ken--welcome in. We have very low dues and the initiation hazing isn't too harsh. The rest of the Boomer folks are pretty cool, too.

Time to go off to dinner, so more to follow.

Re: boomer/noobies 7/16
hi guys

not much time, but I'll make a stab at it..

Hi Jem! I'm so glad DS is doing better. what a rollercoaster. I really like your schedule. I couldn't do it. but it is impressive & actually sounds balanced. you are even taking a cut back week.
sweaty.... oh boy me too.

oh yeah, this morning was 15 min. w/u c/d, 55:09, 4.07 miles, ahr 150 (max 170), ave. pace 13:33. I'm really thinking these hills are a problem, they're not big but are almost constant. was determined to do the karvonen's numbers, but didn't make it. obviously. but so far no solution. I don't think the path option i have is safe at that time in the morning. & plus sadie won't get to run if I do that.

Kevin, nope, that's another dg. there are a few. hence i had to pick a number. I remember now your question of who was in -- whatever area it is you're in now. great if you get to meet Tramps! say hi. he sounds like a very interesting person.
hope you survive the humidity. enjoy your trip.

Mike, I sent you an email. 2, actually.

Hi Ken! Welcome. was going to say more, but I'm out of time & energy & have things to do yet.

so, more to follow soon. waves. be good. be smart. have fun.

oh, Larry. so happy about your marathon. the way you handled your 1/2 was an inspirtation.

'nite everybody.
eta, I'm officially going on a diet. not that it's a big deal, or will be structured necessarily, but I thought saying it might remind me when I need reminding.

Re: boomer/noobies 7/16
Did 52 minutes on the TM tonight, 27 min walk- warmup & cooldown & 25 minutes straight running or 1.5 miles ( 15 minutes at 3.6/ 6 at 3.8/ 4 at 3.6). very happy with that, more improvement from last weeks Treadmilling. This type of improvement is actually typical when I'm on a gradual improvement roll (without getting sick).. the last year has been much harder & frustrating. So I'm a happy camper about now

Cool on the names I love them all!

Deb - safety should be your first concern.. but I hope you can get off those hills, they may be what is causing you problems.

Ken - Santa Maria! Its been a long time since I've been there. I was born & raised in Southern California, but about a year ago moved to Southern Oregon.. definitely a major change in pace & a very good move for the family. I believe we are closest in this group.

I think they made me do my first 5k race in nothing but the american flag wrapped around me. Or some bullspit like that.
