.......Cross-Training when injured.....A Roll of the Dice...

........a few years ago I had to cross-train while recovering from an Ankle Tear, and now with My Back......

........it gets Old Quick,,,,,,,to break it up, I wrote 6-exercises and numbered them 1-6,,,,,,,some days I would Roll the Die(ce) to pick an Exercise.....

.......since this may be of interest to some of us, here they are:

1-versa-climber (or stepper)
2-x-bike
3-nordic trak
4-Tense and Hold Exercise(I can post link if necessary)
5-HeavyHands Non-Running 3-min sets
6-Run In Place (heavyhands, minimum foot lift)..
.........................may want to use different exercise if Ankle is Injured....

.........hope this helps if you're re-habbing..... any 6 exercise will do......

...................................just a thought...

Thanks, tw tw (I don't know why I want to say that twice. I just do.)

Remind me, please: Why Heavy Hands? Don't you strain your neck/shoulders?

I take it, for some of these exercises, you'd have to wait for swelling to dissipate before you start moving the ankle around.

Re: .......Cross-Training when injured.....A Roll of the Dice...
Ankle injuries need some form of rehab, wheather it's just icing or general non-weight bearing range of motion. When rehabilitating an ankle it is very important to use tools such as baps boards, wobble boards and even foam rollers. When an ankle has been injured the neural feedback loop going from the ankle to the brain and back becomes disrupted. Simply put, the ankle and the brain are in constant communication with each other; with the brain controlling what muscles are to fire. This interuption can cause slower than normal responses because the neural feedback loop is now compromised. Using these tools will re-establish this pathway and can even help your agility. The main point is, without this form of rehab you are at a higher risk for repeated ankle injuries. These tools can be bought at medical supply stores or on-line. Good Luck!!

Re: .......Cross-Training when injured.....A Roll of the Dice...
SS.......sportdoc lists some good ideas for rehabbing the ankle once you are able. While there is swelling and discomfort, you are indeed limited in what you'll want to do. However, once you have gotten on a routine of heat/ice treatment, I find the following to be very beneficial.

Warm the ankle by submerging in heated water, preferably in a warm bath. Then, do some gentle rotations of the ankle joint as the swelling and discomfort allow. If you are in a warm bath, you can basically do this with the foot sumberged in the warm water. Once you get the joint warm and gain a bit of mobility, you are ready to start the exercise. It's a simple technique which consists of pointing your toes away from you, and then "drawing" the letters of the alphabet with your toes. At first, you might have to focus on holding your upper leg steady as you will be temped to compensate and do the work with your hip/thighs. Just rotate the ankle, at least as much as you can do without too much discomfort. You'll be suprised at how taxing it can be on the tendons/ligaments when they are working to protect the injury. Your ankle will tire quickly. Go through the entire alphabet just a couple of times at tirst and then progress from there. Immediately after you finish, ice the ankle.

Re: .......Cross-Training when injured.....A Roll of the Dice...
This forum is great because of the people who take the time to share their knowledge and experience.

Thank you, sportsdoc (Welcome and post often!) and piejones. I've not yet graduated from the ice-only treatment as the foot is still looking like a flaccid football. I have a physio appt on Thursday where I'll be given some exercises along with treatment. I'll be happy to share those then.

Maybe it's a good time to add some of this to MustangSally's wiki, as it seems it's Be Unkind to Your Ankle Week here.

Quick healing to you, PTS.

(I did post in the Daily four exercises that I routinely do to strengthen these stabilizing bits in the feet, ankles and legs.)

Also when resting ones injury it is important to keep your spirits up - knitting and reading are two really good ways to spend some enjoyable time recovering.

Side note - tomwhite how is my friend Maggie?

Where were we? Oh yeah - do any of the injured around here want a nice sock pattern?

La Tee Doe ...

You are a peach. Oh, speaking of which ... did you know I happen to have the most beautiful peach-coloured wool hat in the land? Can't wait for cooler temps to show it off!

As most of my socks end up being moth attractants or oddly misshapen Christmas stockings, I think I will have to graciously decline your kind offer. I'm really a rookie knitter ... and not a very skillful one. Your pattern is likely way beyond my ability.

I am, however, enjoying "A Complicated Kindness" and trying to keep my spirits up. Successfully so far, thanks to you and others.

Re: .......Cross-Training when injured.....A Roll of the Dice...
Tom,

Thanks for trying to help those on the disabled list........ I'm one that ends up on the DL way more than I'd like....just coming off a painful bout with piriformis syndrome with no running for 5 or 6 weeks.

I usually go into hibernation with sinful food and beverages waiting until I can get back to running. I have a tough time getting motivated to cross train.

I promise that next time on the DL, I will try to do better on the cross training........I'd love to hear more cross training ideas from the sick and injured.

Jim

Re: .......Cross-Training when injured.....A Roll of the Dice...
These ankle injuries hurt to much to think about. In my hiking days I used to get a sprained ankle quite often. Then the cure was walk and never let it stiffin' up. That seemed to work. I havn't had an ankle sprain yet since I started trail running and wonder how it would be to try to run on a sprained ankle. Curious if an ankle sprain is anything like a chronic muscle tear. My sprained ankles were fixed in a couple of weeks where the other took months to heal. Good luck and I hope that you don't have to take up knitting. Larry

Though of minor benefit and not a main course of rehab, healing hugs are another ingredient to a full recovery.
