Bryce Canyon HM RR

Short and sweet:

Fast course, 50-65 F and overcast.
1:38:33, a 4 minute HM PR.
5th of ~35 in AG
64th of ~300 men

The rest of the story:

This was the fourth running (my first) of the Bryce Canyon Half Marathon. The park[/URL" target="_blank"> offers breathtaking scenery and year-round outdoor recreation. At almost 8000 ft elevation, the air is thin but the summer temperatures are mild. This is one of my family's regular vacation spots.

The course sounded fast: flat for two miles, speedy downhill for four miles, then a more gradual downhill to the finish, for a net elevation loss of 1800 ft. It also promised to be very scenic, passing through a four mile section of the park. The forecast was for cloudy skies, 50 F at race time, and 65 F or so at the finish.

My HM PR is 1:42:37. Based on my training I set these goals:

Easy goal: sub 1:40
Realistic goal: 1:38:30
Stretch goal: sub 1:37

To hit 1:38:30, I planned to take the first two miles at 7:40, then average 7:30 or better for the rest. I would adjust my pace based on how I felt at 6 mi (after the speedy downhill part) and about 10 mi.

Mile 1 - 7:42, 157 bpm
Mile 2 - 7:41, 169 bpm, aid station

The second mile felt harder than I expected, but the fast downhill miles were up next, which would give me a chance to recover and still keep a good pace.

Mile 3 - 7:00, 163 bpm
Mile 4 - 6:57, 165 bpm
Mile 5 - 7:04, 168 bpm, aid station
Mile 6 - 7:09, 169 bpm

I ran these miles faster than I had planned, but my effort felt right. I knew that if I could average 7:30 miles for the rest, I could beat 1:37.

Mile 7 - 7:27, 170 bpm, aid station
Mile 8 - 7:28, 173 bpm
Mile 9 - 8:19, 171 bpm, hill, aid station

Mile 9 was a struggle. A small hill slowed me down a bit. At the aid station I felt like I needed some refreshment if I was going to keep this up. I fumbled with a gel and water and probably lost 30 seconds here. Need more practice. Or I might have been better off skipping the gel and taking Gatorade from the aid station.

Mile 10 - 7:46, 172 bpm, aid station
Mile 11 - 7:44, 171 bpm, aid station
Mile 12 - 7:58, 171 bpm, hill, aid station

I struggled on another small hill and lost time at the aid stations. I certainly didn't need to stop at three aid stations in three miles. Why were there so many aid stations anyway?

Mile 13 - 7:29, 173 bpm, hill
The rest - 0:43, 175 bpm

The only significant hill on the course was in mile 13, and I kept pace like it wasn't even there. (And I skipped the aid station!) A lot of this is mental, isn't it?

Finish - 1:38:33, 5th of ~35 in AG, 64th of ~300 men OA.
Splits - 47:42/50:51 (+3:09)

I stayed around to enjoy the post-race fun, see the awards, and congratulate some of the winners. I have my eye on a top-3 AG finish one of these days. In this race I was 8 minutes behind 3rd in my AG.

I am happy that I met my goal and that I have a shiny new PR. I am a little disappointed at having made some costly mistakes, but I have some things to ponder as I prepare for my next race.

I decided regarding my customary black & gray running attire that "I am no longer that person" and those colors are "not cute anymore". So I wore red + white + silver Saucony Tangets, red + gray Pearl Izumi shorts, and a white Brooks singlet.

Mr. Garmin reports:

Thanks for reading (or skipping to the end). I look forward to your comments.

Re: Bryce Canyon HM RR
Congrats on the PR millbot! What a scenic place for a race. Did you really use all those aid stations? I think there are faster times in your future (like in early August). Do some medium long progession and/or fast finish runs and you will reap the rewards. But you are right - a lot of it is mental. Good luck!

Great job, millbot. You are a speedster. How do you get such a smooth elevation graph out of Mr. Garmin?

Nice race millbot and good 4 minute PR too. I definately think running can be just as much between the ears as doing the physical bit, but you still did great and have learnt something for the the next one! Well done.

Re: Bryce Canyon HM RR
Woohooo on the spiffy new fashionable outfit, too cute for sure! And the hugh new PR; 4 minutes??!! Excellent, especially at high altitude like that.
Of course you should be on the brink of a new age group soon (ahem ), so those placements in your division will start coming thick and fast soon too.
Congratulations!

Re: Bryce Canyon HM RR
Okay, nice effort, millbot, but where's the pic for me to play with?

Yes, skip the gel for sure. And don't skip Skip's advice. He knows stuff.

I'm getting concerned with how quickly you're progressing. You don't want to beat the Old Gal now, do you? Then it'll really mean woh-wah.

Great racing! Keep it up.

Re: Bryce Canyon HM RR
geez millbot, nice 4 minute pr! that's a heck of a breakthrough... and looks like the course to do it on, except for that pesky high altitude thing.

i've always thought that an early water stop can save two or three late-race water stops... hit the early stops systematically next time, say 2, 4, 6 and 8. gatorade for sure, and you won't feel the need to gel.

try a water stop practice race, where you grab water at every aid station. grab a cup by sticking your fingers in the top, pour out half, squeeze the top of the cup together to form a funnel, and drink without breaking your stride. be sure to burp 100-200m later. getting a gatorade should only slow you down 3-4 seconds... practice makes perfect.

you'll be beating sans souchi... err i mean you'll be getting that ag hardware soon enough!

Re: Bryce Canyon HM RR
What a great race you ran millbot, and a 4 minute PR woo hoo! You can't be too far away from that first time in the top 3 of your AG it is coming I am sure!

I couldn't agree more with mscolar. I find out ahead of time if the stops will have both water and a sports drink or what so that I can schedule what I will take when and usually will take sports drink in the middle miles of a HM. And I would also do away with the gel or at the very least practice with one during a long run so that you can do this on the run. And I do exactly as he explains with my water etc. Grab the cup as close to full stride as you can pour a little out and pinch it together and drink it in. The burp is a great idea as it releases air that is bound to get in due to all the jostling

Once again great race!
