Here is the HR and elevation chart.
This last weekend, my DW and I made the journey to historic Stillwater, the "birthplace" of Minnesota. We have been coming to Stillwater for the last 5 years, and for the last 3 years have been there during Lumberjack Days. We stay at a bed and breakfast for our little summer getaway, and this is the second year we have run the 10 mile race. The 10 mile course is a fast one, with lots of very fast runners.
Speaking of very fast runners, I visited a bit with Hermosaboy just before the start. He introduced me to Mike, a very good runner from MNRED who was looking to run a 1:05. That was my stretch goal for the day, so we decided to start out the run together.
We lined up with about 100-150 runners ahead of us, but the first half-mile was really congested. It opened up a bit after that, and soon we were able to settle into a real good pace.
The only tough part of this course is the uphill portion from mile 3 to mile 5. Coming up to the Mile 4 marker, I told Mike that I needed to take my pace down just a little to recover. (My HR hit 181 on the hill, and I knew I was red-lining). We were right on pace when we split, and I didn't want to stop Mike from going sub-1:05.
Mike pulled away gradually, and I slowly recovered over the next 2 miles.
I came up to the 10K timing mat, and looked at my watch. I was planning on running this race at close to 6:30/ mile, but when I saw 41:37 (a PR by 20 seconds), I had some doubts running through my mind. I've just run a 10K PR, how the heck can I continue on for another 3.8 miles??
It was time to throw away those negative thoughts, focus on the positive. I'm feeling a little fresher now, and soon there are some downhill stretches coming up. The next miles went real well, I was passing people and feeding off the energy I just stole from them.
Got to the final mile and just started seeing how many more runners I could pick off. The photos here show one of the guys I passed about 120 yards before the finish. Right after that I put on a pretty hard sprint the final 100 yards to pass one more young runner just before the finish mat.
After the finish, I grabbed a water and walked about 300 yards back on the course to cheer on DW. I was hoping that she would run a good, consistent race. I have been working with her this summer in training for her first marathon this fall, and I told her to run right around 9:00 miles. Pretty soon, she was coming down the home stretch, looking good. She finished in 1:28:25, a PR for her by nearly 2 minutes!!
I see from the results that Mike continued on and smashed his goal by running a 1:04:33! Way to go, Mike!! And Hermosaboy, what can you say about this fast dude!?!?! He annihilated the 60 minute barrier and won his AG!!
Overall, we had a great weekend in Stillwater, and that evening went to the "New Cars" concert. They were OK, but they just don't sound the same without Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr
Split detail from my Garmin 305 (it doesn't add up exactly):
Mile 1: 6:33 - 154HR
Mile 2: 6:25 - 167 HR
Mile 3: 6:28 - 170 HR
Mile 4: 6:38 - 175 HR
Mile 5: 6:49 - 175 HR
Mile 6: 6:49 - 173 HR
Mile 7: 6:17 - 172 HR
Mile 8: 6:33 - 173 HR
Mile 9: 6:43 - 174 HR
Mile 10: 6:05 - 176 HR
423 ft: 0:22 - 183HR (4:34 pace)

. It's also cool you were able to put some faces to the names you read about all the time. I'm looking forward to doing the same someday, hopefully soon. Great pics!
