Ken, besides getting the gout under control, were there any other factors? if you already said so & I forgot, please forgive me.<HR>

Besides geting laid of, moving my family out of state and starting over? No, not really. I had a lot of things going on in my life around then and the gout was just the excuse to pack it all in. Then it's amaizing how fast you get out of shape. Now I have to get going and get fit for my aging bodies health! I know I like to run and will stick with it. I just need to start over.

Question, do you think a Garmin Foreruner 305 is too much for a beginning runner? I'm a gadget guy and it looks cool. I'm looking at something to reward me when I graduate the C25K.

I do not, even though I don't know just what the 305 offers, & am not going to look right now because it's late for me... but I got a pretty good polar when I'd only run for 3 months or so. Probably more than I needed but the features have been really helpful. And now, I actually kind of wish I'd gotten the next step up. You don't want to have to replace it. so, that's my off the top of my head reply. the perfect graduation present.

Re: Boomer Newbies -- week of July 23 --
Hi all -
I'm Laura, 46, from Houston. Wish I had a better user name, but wasn't thinking when I registered. I will do the 3rd day of the 4th week of C25K tomorrow morning. I started running in college, did 10Ks back then, but was always middle to back of pack, nothing competitive. I quit after having kids in my 30's, just no time for it as a working mom. Now I am looking forward to competing in the 50-54 age group in a few years, because it may take me that long to really get my speed down. I ran last year, but started out with old shoes (not too smart, I know), and aggravated my chondromalacia. Now that I'm starting slow with good shoes, it's going much better. I always use a cold pack afterwards, and take a little ibuprofen or naproxen.

Is anyone else running where it's hot? My usual temps to run in are 75-80 degrees, even before the sun comes up.

I'm using www.walkjogrun.net[/URL" target="_blank"> to map my runs and see how far I'm going, since I'm trying to keep track of how much distance I'm putting on the shoes. It's great for travel too. We spent a week in Florida for my son's baseball tournament, and all the families shared rent houses. I could run a circuit in the neighborhood and then map it afterward for distance.

Well, gotta log the 2 days of C25K I did earlier in the week. I'm enjoying reading the posts in here, and hope to learn and share more!

-Laura

Re: Boomer Newbies -- week of July 23 --
Thanks, KenA, I just found this thread.

I'm 59, retired a year ago after 30+ years of teaching, and was becoming a very comfortable couch potato until January. That's when my daughter told me about C25K. In February I began walking and in March began w1. I thought I'd die. I repeated almost every week, even doing w4&5 three times until success. The nine-week program took me about 16 weeks, but I graduated and now run 4-5x a week, mostly at the Y on a TM.

My first race was over July 4th weekend. Hurray! I finished, hardly out of breath. Now for the rest of the story . . . I was the only woman in the 55-59 group, and even though I came in last in the whole race, I got the first place in age group. : ) Everyone in the stands cheered for me when I crossed the finish line.

I'm losing weight, bringing my blood pressure down, and am - gasp - enjoying running. I tried running way back in college but did too much too soon and quit. To stay healthy and keep health problems minimal, I hope to run for a long time.

Laurie, thanks :-). I say, as driven as you are, if you are not inclined to run for a bit it is BECAUSE YOU NEED THE REST. just my humble opinion.
yep, I'll keep running. I got a good answer to my question, will cut back about 20% next week on mileage. this week was 18. last week 14ish.

welcome Laura & lswife!! I'll catch up more soon, I have a) been posting too much anyway & b) have lots to do before the day is done.

i'm putting some hooks in the wall in a back bedroom so I can do 2 of the exercises from my new book that require resistance tubes. hee. I tried a resistance band with a tied loop & hooked it around something, & it broke.

my best quick advice... it you're doing c25k, follow the program! don't push it. I did, not on a program but just winging it myself, & I paid for it. have fun.

lswife, that's so great! now you can help talk me into trying a 5k. I have a marathon planned, but that's not till 10/08, so it's far enough away I can pretend that I can do it. but I've never had the nerve to enter anything.

hi everybody else. um, kevin, want me to start collecting fines?

eta, laurie, a 10k? woohoo! which one is it? I don't know much about garmins of anykind, but have been looking into them for DD who is becoming more & more interested. try a search with the model you want then site:coolrunning.com & see what you find. it works better all in lower case.

this morning I did my longest run ever.. 6.25 miles, plus w/u,c/d. it was in 1:13:53, ahr was 158, ave. pace was 11:49. I read that you make good adaptions in your long runs if you run them between 60 & 80% of your HRR, so I tried that. which is why my pace was still under 12-- that surprised me. the only thing is, that was a higher hr overall for my long run, I think I probably should have just tried the higher hr first, then added milage. hopefully it won't cause a problem. sure was happy about it :-).

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow! Debbie, that's tremendous! The miles and the pace, both. You rock!

I don't have one, but there's a guy, Eric (sekd256) who got one when he first started and has really enjoyed, I think. If you're tekkie you'll probby have a blast with it.

Hey, newcomers and regular pals, no time to talk now, but keep up the good work, whether it's resting or running.

Re: Boomer Newbies -- week of July 23 --
dg9 - I was afraid of entering a race too. Would people laugh at me - old and overweight? Well, no one laughed, and everyone encouraged me. I do know enough to begin at the back of the pack, though when the person yelled go, I began running too fast, got out of breath, and had to walk soon. Was the slight incline we were going up? Was it the pavement? The heat and humidity? Kids passed me, and a guy who had knee surgery a week before ran past too. We finished on a school track. When I saw that surface, I thought "I can run the last quarter of mile without walking" and did. No, I really wasn't all by myself as about five of us oldsters-who-have-weight-to-lose were together. A 34-year-old woman passed me the last ten feet, and she had told me she didn't want to be last. Oh well. People still clapped, the officials were still smiling and encouraging, I was handed a bottle of ice water and a ribbon for participating . . . and my husband and I went home. I wondered why I had to run and walk, and when I saw my time I realized my mistake - too fast but I was 2 minutes faster than ever before. : ) I really don't mind coming in last; I was faster than all those who didn't run.

I've read that in a race, the people will either be experienced and will encourage newbies or people will be beginners and just as nervous. Go ahead and enter the race. I'm looking around for my next one too.

Re: Boomer Newbies -- week of July 23 --
Hey, everybody. Just have a few moments for a quick hello. I discovered last week that even we tourists can use the public library for the paltry sum of $10 a year, so now I have a new hangout. (I'm such a wild woman!) Good timing, too, since it's rained 4 of the last 7 days. Trouble is, when it's raining, this is where everybody else wants to be, and the computer lab is mobbed. Can only be online for 30 minutes, and the network is really slow when it's this busy, so I ve to "talk" fast!

Spent most of my online time last week updating my CR running log. I ran 50.5 miles in June - my best month so far!!

Had a so-so week of running last week. Managed 4.4 miles on Thursday and 5.5 on Saturday. (Gee, 6.6 would be the next logical thing, huh?) Was supposed to do 7 yesterday, but it's been raining and I've been feeling really tired, so I took yesterday off from exercise altogether - first true rest day since the end of June. Sun's out now, but they're predicting thunderstorms later - I'm going to try to get in an hour of kayaking shortly. Will attempt the first ever 7-mile run tomorrow - nice and hot and humid after all these storms!!

Sorry I don't have time for personal shout-outs - will try for those as the week goes on. Glad to see so many new folks. Will properly introduce myself when the computer lab's not so busy or when I get home for a day next week.

Happy running, all. Keep cool!!

Eliz

<<<<<been posting too much anyway >>>>>

So such thing!

Eliz, I would be happy to run that much! I got in a measly 5 mile run last week. That was all. Hey where are you btw?

Ditto to what lswife said about racing. I've had to walk too. Had good times, bad times and mediocre times. But I have loved every one of them. Dont care if I finish DFL. I just want to finish. Got passed by a woman who looked like she was about 70 last 5k.

Laurie
