LifeLine of Ohio Half 7/28

(post copied from RR)

Dateline: Columbus
Weather: Hazy, humid, 73 degrees at 7:30am
Cause: Raise awareness for organ donation
Goal #1: Do better than last year's 2:08 (accomplished)
Goal #2: PR w/ a 2:05 (will have to wait until the fall)

Fashion Report: light blue MIT shirt, black race-ready shorts, white mesh cap, silver/blue Asics 2110's, LiveStrong bracelet, lots of vaseline.

I planned to run consistent 9:30's, which would give me a little time cushion. I hydrated well, E-capped and Gu'd before the start, did both again at 5m, Gu only at 9m, fluids at every stop. Wouldn't have changed a thing there.

A nice group of 4-5 women sprung up after the first couple of miles and we stuck together for the bulk of the race. I usually end up running these things by myself, so it was helpful to have a support group. I saw 4boys a couple of times - she was having a tough time with the heat but was determined to finish.

The 2-loop course starts in downtown Columbus then follows the bike trail along the river. The hills don't seem too bad during the first loop, but the sun broke through the haze by the second pass and faster people were beginning to fade.

I was able to maintain my pace until the 11m uphill, where I crashed smack-dab into the Wall. I didn't see it coming and I couldn't recover from it. I walked through the next gatorade stop then struggled to stay under 10:00.

As a final insult, the finish is uphill. A couple of folks from my training group were there to shout encouragement and help me finish on my feet (my last 0.1m was at 8:27!).

I got it done in 2:06:36... better than last year and still a 20-second PR, but not quite what I hoped to do. I'll give it another shot after the marathon in October.

Jeanne - way to go!! You really hung in there and achieved your PR!! I hate uphill finishes - you did an amazing job and are lucky to have such good team support - especially at the finish where you needed it most. I'm an Ohio girl (haven't lived there for several decades though) and I can't imagine running there in July - heat and humidity. Way to go - you da' runner!!

Way to go, mum2girls! Durn uphill finishes! It's been hot and humid here in NE OH. I give you lots of credit for racing in it! Good luck in Columbus. P.S. You won't need to wait until you're 60

Way to go!!

Sounds like a good race and you had a good solid showing despite hitting the wall. That is a great experience to FACE that situation and GET THROUGH it. You have the grit and determination that is needed.

Nice fashion report too. You were well dressed for the occasion.

I will be watching to see how your running continues so that you BQ in the months that are ahead.

Thanks SO much for sharing this neat RR.

And again....Congratulations.

Re: LifeLine of Ohio Half 7/28
From someone who tends to wilt in the heat & humidity, I feel your pain finishing uphill on a day like yesterday! Great to get your PR, though. This reminds me of my performance in the Dexter-AA half in early June, where I squeaked out a PR in what were really tough conditions for me, leaving me wondering what I would have done if it were cooler and drier.

So your plan to try again in the Fall is a good one -- and good luck with it!

Re: LifeLine of Ohio Half 7/28
mum2girls,

Good job and congrats on the PR.

Personally I wouldn't think about taking Gu for a half-marathon or shorter race. I don't even know what an E-cap is, which probably means I wouldn't be taking that, either.

For a half-marathon or shorter race, I would just hydrate during the race, probably with a sports drink, and rely on the calories from that.

For a 10K or shorter, I probably wouldn't even hydrate during the race.

I'd be interested to hear what other people think.

Re: LifeLine of Ohio Half 7/28
mum2girls -

I'm from West Central Ohio, I have never done this race. But, I will normally run 9 halfs in a year, plus the Homestretch 20 miler and Columbus marathoon.

Like yourself, I will take the E-Caps from Hammer nutrition if I run a Half Marathon or anything longer. I will sweat a ton during a race.

Without the e-caps, my calves will cramp up badly. (Calf cramps nearly knocked me out of the Columbus marathon last year at mile 23) I take 3 before the race, then take 2 more after the run. For a 20 miler to marathon distance, I will take them before, 2 e-caps during & after.

I will also Gu. I will take a Gu somewhere between miles 8 - 10 for a half. I could make it without a Gu, but the Gu seems to prevent a late race performance drop-off.

Congrats on your run. A Half marathon in Late July is a huge accomplishment.

Re: LifeLine of Ohio Half 7/28
Jeanne ? I also live close, in Dayton. Congratulations on the PR, especially with the heat and the hills. Great job!

As for the GU/e-cap discussion ? I have never tried an e-cap and don?t use gels or Gatorade on training run distances of less than 18 miles. However, for the HM I ran in May, I did drink the Gatorade at the hydration stations.
