River City Days 5 Mile RR

So, KeeMan and I headed out for our 2nd race of the weekend just 13 hours after we finished out last one. Wasn't sure what to expect from my legs, but this was the race I was looking forward to.

Showed up for the race and KeeMan ran into one of his teammates. We went out for a nice warm-up. They cut it a bit shorter than me -- I went a little over 3. At the start, saw that the runner who coach told me to get last weekend was there (for his 3rd race out of 4 this weekend -- yikes!). Looked around at the others, looks like it's going to be a two man race. Oh joy!

Short Version -- 1/20 in AG -- you have to read the rest to see OA...

Fashion report -- same as last night (I did wash everything).

So, we line up on a little path and the starter sends us off. Immediately, it IS a two man race. So, we settle into our pace. My plan for the race was to try to go out a little behind pace and then pick it up. Unfortunately, once I realized it was just the two of us, I threw that plan out the window. Time to run for position!!!

So, we are pretty much running neck and neck most of the race. He would surge a little bit -- I would cover it. I would pull a little bit ahead -- he would cover it. That pretty much summarizes most of the race.

Mile 1 -- 5:46 @ 146 -- not bad -- a little slower than I hoped for, but I am in first/second place
Mile 2 -- 5:41 @ 156 -- right about where I want to be -- still battling
Mile 3 -- 5:40 @ 159 -- Seems like he is fading but he keeps coming back
Mile 4 -- 5:40 @ 161 -- I got him by a couple of steps -- Time to pick it up!

As I surge, I think pull ahead by maybe by 15 or 20 -- is he going to come back? Guess it doesn't really matter! Just run dummy!!!

Make the last turn for the slightly uphilll last quarter -- steal a glance -- don't think he's going to get me.

Mile 5 -- 5:24 @ 164

Time -- 28:11 @ 157 max of 168

1st OA (nice plaque) out of 85 total runners 52 males
25 seconds faster than my 8k PR and a 2:02 improvement over last year's time.

As for KeeMan -- he finished 5th OA and one his AG with a 29:35 -- a 2:45 improvement over last year and a nice PR.

And the data:

hermosaboy,

Congratulations. A 2:02 improvement over last year's time in a 5 mile race is huge. What are you doing different these days? Just getting stronger over time as you keep training, or are you training differently?

Hey, Keeman smoked you by 8 seconds in the mile race, but was 1:24 behind you for 5 miles. What gives? The kid needs to run more mileage, I think. Still a great effort by him.

Your training and confidence has certainly paid dividends hermosaboy. That's a great result for you and keeman. Well done to both of you. My 5 mile race this week shall be somewhat slower than yours but I shall think of this RR for inspiration to try harder!

Skip that silly graph stuff. I want to see pictures of you and Keeman!

Congrats to you both on some speedy racing. One of these days it's going to be you and Keeman going head-to-head for 1st OA.

Hermosa, that was really impressive, especially after your fast mile the night before. Great job on the 1st OA (which meant 1st AG), a huge PR, and redeeming your honor by beating KeeMan. I don't know much about heart rate but Dr. Dale was impressed with your heart rate graph for the one mile race. It looks to me like you did the same thing over five miles so that must be really good. Congratulations to you and KeeMan.

nice win hermosa!

psst - when you run a 5:24 for the last mile, you don't have to look over your shoulder... that's a heck of a finish; your poor competition must have been sucking air watching you drop him like that. (nice )

Great race. Great race. Rather than respond to last night's mile, I thought I'd wait for the 5 and do a 2 for 1.

You are in rare form. That last mile today--what a way to wrap up a terrific week. Not only are you fast, but you are one of the most durable runners I've seen in a while.
