Yes, where is our leader? And mrpat too.

Health store didn't have Kefir. Proprietor made some odd comment about having to have a bazillion gallons of yoghurt in order to make it. I think the woman's had too much soy, to be frank. She said to check back in September.

Mixed up a nice batch of soynuts, dried cranberries, wee dark chocolate chips, raw cashews, sunflowers, pumpkin seeds. Quite yummy snack.

La T, I love crushing fresh mint leaves in lemonade. Virgin mojito (VoMo).

Crookneck squashes are taking over the neighbourhood. Could probably substitute them for zucchini in a cake or loaf, ya think?

Re: August Boomer Eating Healthy or Battle of the Bulge Challenge
My sister and I would hollow out crook neck squash, thread a leaf onto a stick, stick the stick into the hollowed out squash and send it sailing down the ditch after it had rained enough to make the ditch a canal of sorts...

But, I suppose you could sub a crook neck squash for the zucchini in zucchini bread... I sort of favor the color of the zucchini, though.

Tonight, I chopped up broccoli and carrots and sautéd them in olive oil, a splash of balsamic vinegar, garlic, pesto, parsley, salt and pepper. Then I tossed that with whole wheat penne pasta.

Ta da.

Here are some good looking recipes for Zucchini from the NYTimes mag last sunday. I am thinking I would like the chilled soup on the second page.

Re: August Boomer Eating Healthy or Battle of the Bulge Challenge
Just a quickie.

What a relief to know it's the fat that's making me slow! It's the old BMI defense. Sounds like a t-shirt or bumper sticker.

SS, remember what George Karlin said about yogurt? "If yogurt is rotten milk, who decides when the yogurt is rotten?" I can mail some Kefir. It will keep. I bought 2 strawberry and 2 plain today. I like a mixed drink. We don't have any of those other good flavors here.

Wish I had those green squashes and I wouldn't mind a NYTimes.

Re: August Boomer Eating Healthy or Battle of the Bulge Challenge
Hi, everyone.
I'm back from a conference. Free and unpredictable food makes me kindof crazy -- feel I have to eat everything that is offered.

Speaking of zucchini -- last summer I got a zucchini cake recipe from Food Network that was based on a boxed spice cake mix. Anyone else have this? I can't find it now, but it was excellent. Very simple, just cake mix and 2 c. grated zucch. and maybe a container of plain low-fat yogurt? It was fabulous -- moist enough to not need frosting. Cake mix was probably not the healthiest, but at least it didn't have to 2 c. of oil that my zucc. bread recipe has. The whole family liked it, which was a plus.

Re: August Boomer Eating Healthy or Battle of the Bulge Challenge
Egret - it sounds as if we have had similar experiences. I found that combining my carbs with proteins and fats has sustained my energy level and I somehow feel - although I don't know this - that the carbs help me process the fats more efficiently. My weight has dropped a bit, but the real benefits are a smaller belly and leaner legs. Apparently I seem unable to tolerate some foods as well as I have in the past. While on vacation I (of course) splurged on an ice cream cone. A mini might have been a better choice as my energy dropped, so I took a nap and then woke up with the worst head-ache. I would love to not blame the ice cream, but I think that I may know better.

Rose - love the squash boat story - what a wonderful memory. The stir fry sounds yummy, but as you may now suspect, I would be likely to add a few nuts or black beans to what you created.

Hally - I'm not seeing the recipes

My health plan for this week is to buy extra goods from the farmer's market and preserve them for a winter treat now and then. Canning is out, but drying or blanching & freezing might work. As is baking a few zucchini or squash breads.

Any suggestions?

Re: August Boomer Eating Healthy or Battle of the Bulge Challenge
Hey La T, I think you have to subscribe to see them, it's free though. Also after a bit they archive them so if you like em you have to either save em or pay to see them.

E, interesting food plan. I admire your resolve but I couldn't do it. Obviously that's why you look like you do and I look like I do
Still, I don't think that a daily serving of a whole grain like brown rice, quinoa, oatmeal, etc is going to be bad in the long run and your colon will thank you down the road. I wonder if the Kenyans eat such a noncarb diet, I tend to think not.

I started logging my food again, time to get back on the downward trend. Although I am going to Cape Cod next week with the bike club, lots of exercise but I make up for it in beer and food after
But after that I swear I am getting back at it!!

sigh. never leave your already too long post to check a link. the one above has a way to figure your body fat % using calipers. bet we have some someplace. scary.

yummy sounding soup, kirsten. dh says he's allergic to tofu.

egret, thanks for the link. I don't have a sense for how much protein compared to the usual recommendations he's recommending. do you know why this program kick-starts your metabolism? does it induce ketosis?

Rose, any updates?? married to a space cadet you get all the space you want. my mom loved that recipe too. also gone 14 years. . where did you live as a youngster?

Lynne, where are you? and how are you?

FF, hi! For me, something is always in a catastrophic phase. (re your mention of what you're eating) I never can do it all. the disasters just take turns. now I'm in a good state of balance. everything is in a moderate state of catastrophy .

I absolutely agree with eating foods as unprocessed as possible. when I'm in one of my good phases (not right now!) to eat something not whole & pure is almost inconceivable. & when I start to eat one of my oatmeal fruit nut things or something like that & do it too fast, I can tell when it starts to influence insulin output & bloodsugar. am picky about which fruits. it amazed me the subtle changes you can notice.

I guess that's just what you 2 were talking about.

I think I'll work on more of what egret & La T are doing...at least to some extent, but gradual changes, that's what's always worked. am finally down a few pounds, not sure why. lunch has been really good all week, salads w/tofu & lemon & ground flax. dinner tonight was trader joe's sprouted grain pasta (hally, have you tried that?) w/chopped raw scallions, tomato, celery, arugula, a little olive oil, & salmon. course, then espresso & a little chocolate. but a couple of nights ago dinner was beer & cookies. do I need to tweak some more?

Kirsten, maybe not what you're looking for, but if you get fresh herbs you can chop them & put them in ice cube trays w/water & freeze them & get a fresher taste in soups & things. am trying to think of other things. I'd have good intentions but not do it.

Barb, have fun at Cape Cod.

jogswithdog, have you recovered from your conference?

Re: August Boomer Eating Healthy or Battle of the Bulge Challenge
Well it is almost time to think about Sept health

Deb - what a lovely post. Thanks for noting each of us. I appreciate the herb suggestion as we are at the end of the farmers market, so now is the time to stock up. Also, just for the record, I used to work in an allergy clinic - unless your DH has a very rare and specific protein allergy, well ... I have tested for bees (all varieties), shellfish (clams, crabs, oysters and lobster) as wel as a plethora of trees, weeds and dust mites, but never tofu. On the otherhand El Senor has never like cucumber and I believe - never will.

Re: August Boomer Eating Healthy or Battle of the Bulge Challenge
La T! Normally I do add black beans!

Deb, I grew up in a suburb of Akron, Ohio. Manchester, now it is called "New Franklin". Sort of sad that they change the name of your town after you leave... kind of like changing the locks.

But. My parents and all of my relatives are from West Chester, Pennsylvania. I have no relatives left in Ohio, except for in-laws. I almost claim West Chester as my "home" area because that's where the roots are.

Ooops! Off to my son's very first Cross Country race... he will probably be way in the back, but that's okay, he has a good attitude!

Happy September Healthy Livers! (pancreas, gall bladder, stomach)

(Oh and no news on the health issues until 24 September)

Speaking of September........has anyone seen Lynne around?
We need a new thread Lynne

And yes, I have tried the sprouted pasta from TJ's Deb, it makes me feel so healthy

If Lynne doesn't surface can someone start September? I am off for the day.

Re: August Boomer Eating Healthy or Battle of the Bulge Challenge
dg9 -- yes, I'm back into my routine, thanks for asking. Did 6 miles with friend yesterday -- was disappointed that it was so tough. That convinced me that I really need to get serious about healthy eating and weight control. My new pledge is to eat small healthy meals and snacks. Sweets are my downfall. I'm trying to limit carbs to whole-grain or veggie.

Egrt talked about body fat slowing you down -- is there a place I could find the research on that??

Can't wait to try the carrot soup recipe when the cool weather sets in. I'm also going to try to make some cucumber pickles without sugar.

Happy fall, everyone!
