The Bellingham Bay Marathon B&B Party

As the time is getting closer to our up coming Bellingham Inaugural Marathon (October 7th) I would like to start this thread to help us get organized. In order for me to do that, I would like to see if I can delegate some of the tasks to the â??local Boomersâ??. My goal is to show our â??warmest welcomeâ?? and the grandest hot tub party a-la-Tesujin to the out of town Bommer god and goddesses who will be gracing us with their presence. To date we have 6 Boomers who will be running the Bellingham Inaugural (aka bellymary). I have a dream that others will join us since we still have 9 more weeks to go. http://www.bellinghambaymarathon.org/[/URL" target="_blank">

Gordon, would you mind finding us the lodging information? Something close to the starting line would be great. I was also thinking if there are some cabins that we can rent for the weekend it would be nice. Just a variety of options, I guess, just to give people choices. It would be also great to find some information on what is happening that weekend in the city and surrounding areas, like a calendar of events from the chamber of commerce, so non-running families could keep themselves occupied.

Tet, could you be in-charge of the "night before event" such the victory lap you did in Eugene?

I, the butterfly goddess will start investigating about the carbo-loading possibilities for the inaugural bellymary and the â??slumber partyâ?? of course.

I hope this is an OK arrangement. Please let me know. I would love some lovely pictures of Bellingham if someone can get it for me to post in our initial thread.

Nancy

Re: The Bellingham Bay Marathon B&B Party
nanciposai -

thank you the bellingham information. With a backdrop of Mt. Baker (where I used to ski and climb a lot - ETA - thanks for the hiking photos sounder), it's one of the PNW's more scenic cities but not so big that we'll all get lost from each other.

There's no Hayward Field in Bellingham that's for sure but a day-before victory lap somewhere convenient would be a fitting victory celebration of everyone already having taken the most important step in marathoning of just getting ready to do it. Pink thongs optional.

Thank you again.

In 2005 Bellingham was named as one of the top retirement cities for active seniors in the nation attracting handsome guys and beautiful goddesses from around the world.

Beautiful Bellingham is nationally renowned for its scenic parks, trails, and numerous outdoor activities such as running, ultra[/URL" target="_blank">-marathons[/URL" target="_blank">*, hiking, skiing, skating, hang-gliding, rowing, sculling, paddling, canoeing, kayaking, national triathlon championships[/URL" target="_blank">, duathlons, fishing (and eating delicious seafoods), cycling, criterons, cyclocross, mountain trail cycling and, of course running in pink thongs.

*including the
Baker Lake 50K[/URL" target="_blank"> some marathonmaniacs will be doing the day before the bellymary.

Oh you tease!
Bellingham is a town 10 miles from me. I was psyched.
Oh well, probably can't get to WA one week before Hartford.
Thanks anyway,
Criag

Re: The Bellingham Bay Marathon B&B Party
ahem. You guys need some more advertising for a trip to nearby Mt. Baker post-race ...

You can drive to nearby Mt. Baker and enjoy the climb. Elevation 10,781 feet.

While you're there, get earthy and kiss a tree (watch out for smart aleks lurking in the woods)...

...see pretty Nisqually Falls

...take a little hike and when you get tired (because you just ran 26.2 miles, after all, or you're just in a whiney funk), have someone carry you:

...play in the snow

...await bears

...sit down your tired bones and smile!

if my midwest marathon plans fall through, I'll be there, too.

Thanks for getting this started. I mentioned in another thread that the host hotel is booked, so I'm staying at the Holiday Inn Express (subject to change).

Oooooh! Twisting my arm, you are! Still working on DH for this one... but I have to say it's lookin' better! He's dressing it up to look like a birthday trip, and that works ok for me even if it's a week early. He has a fren in Bellingham who he thinks we can stay with, but I don't know where.

Well, there are some very strict requirements... The boomer Goddess I am looking for have to have butterfly wings, look good in pink flip flops and above anything must enjoy slumber parties... I know I am demanding, but do you know such a person?

Re: The Bellingham Bay Marathon B&B Party
jura - are two of the three qualifications okay?

are you going to be able to bring your aquasocks for the whole mary? I hope so. However, we'll make sure there's some exrra thongs for you and evan along with the other goddesses for the Saturday Pink Thong Run. What's your longest aquasocks run so far?

Evan - doin' the bellymary a couple of weeks after the very, very tough Equinox Marathon (especially with its 2,000 foot climb up Ester Dome at mile nine), you're nuts and will have to be our special guest of honor for sure. In fact, dove, karl and I will probably have a special surprise for you.

Oh, and good luck at the upcoming Humpy's Marathon!

Great photos Soundrunner, you gorgeous goddess! But what is that white stuff all over the place? It won't be there during a race will it?

10K ft of elevation change during a race is a little much....

Actually if the 10K race is horizontal that sounds interesting...

Re: The Bellingham Bay Marathon B&B Party
Hey lapey,

10K ft of elevation? ya been eatin' fermented blackberries or something? They only got 8,700 feet in 50 miles of running around Mt. Rainier in last month's White River 50.

Actually, a friend who?s run the Seattle, Portland and all sorts of other marathons around here (Boston too) was in on the previewing of the BellyMary course and indicates the longest hill is only 0.15 miles, about a block or two, cf 0.5 miles to the top a certain big hill I love in another favorite marathon (and another 0.25 to the top of the bridge).

Of course, I?m with dove and the hillier the better in most cases but the belly will be my second run in an inaugural marathon (in same year, it turns out, as Eugene was #1, thank you econo) and a chance to make up for missing jura?s virgin mary (changed to a half mary so she's still got 26.2 miles to go to lose it at bellingham) at the VIM as well as getting to meet and run with dromedary (and okaasan?) for the first time (konnichi wa), plus maybe reliving a dream I was having on Mt. Spokane earlier in the year about running with butterfly wings. A big out-and-back from mile 10 - 16.5 (16.5 - 22.5) will give a chance to see lynden and karl, . . . and the goddess who get out-of-touch. Sounds like I'll have to put on thongs for about half the course but otherwise not I hope.

The marathon course is mostly flat with some rolling hills, and a couple of very short and steep hills a couple of blocks long at the most with the steepest being only 0.15 mile at mile 12. Since they are short (and faster downhill on the way back), nothing like Seattle or Portland (which are brutal in comparison), there's nothing to slow down your mile pace and it is also flat enough overall to run a PR if you so desire.

The great water views are spectacular, really beautiful neighborhoods and a 12 mile out-and-back on crushed gravel to the turn-around to see other runners and a beer garden at the finish
