HI Delaware runner! Is this your first marathon? I like Hal Higdon's intermediate plans, they will get the job done If you are referring to the training on this website (coolrunning) a lot of people have issues with it, mainly the 26 mile training run which is totally uneccesary for most marathon runners.

Re: Philly Marathon - November 19, 2006
I'm coming off an extended layoff due to sickness and injury. Last week was my first full week of running (4 days) in three months. My fitness level is shot so I think my training schedule will be a more like 12 weeks than 18 weeks. Wish me luck!

Re: Philly Marathon - November 19, 2006
I'll be around for a post marathon meet up!! No, I am going to be at the JFK50 Fri/Sat and coming back either after the race or in the early AM Sun. A woman in my running group is running the JFK50 as well and volunteering as well. So we'll coordinate.

I really wish I could do the marathon, I may see if my running group is doing a relay, if they do not mind a slowpoke, maybe i can run a part of the relay. I think (i know) i will be really sad not to run philly this year. Maybe i should talk to my coach about it..... It is not really a walker friendly marathon like Disney, so I cannot get away with walking it. Isn't there a 5:30 time limit?

Okay, gotta not think crazy talk- Hippo it is all your fault

I'm jealous you are feeling so good. Keep up the good work. I'm still trying to get my legs back after sickness and injury sidelined me for two months. I've only been at 15-20 MPW for the last three weeks. I'm not sure I'll be ready to go by November but I'll be trying hard. I think I've finally accepted the fact that if I do run, I'll have to adjust my goal big time.

You have plenty of time.

Q. Does anyone really need water in the first 3 miles? Just asking

Re: Philly Marathon - November 19, 2006
How far has everyone's longest run been so far? My running group is going 20 on Sat. which seems way too far too soon. Of course, many of them are running the MCM which is 3 weeks earlier. The farthest I've gone is 16, which was 2 weeks ago. I've also been battling a cold for the past week and have hardly run at all. I"m not sure how far I should go this weekend.

What do you guys think?

Re: Philly Marathon - November 19, 2006
You don't need a twenty miler yet. But by now you should have decided how many twenty milers you plan to do in training for Philly. I'm running two marathons before Philly as training runs with the first one being on September 17th and I haven't run a twenty miler yet. Since Vermont City Marathon back on Memorial Day weekend I've been averaging just over 40MPW and have done seven races in distances from 5k to 8 miles. I'm planning on 17 this Sunday then 20 in two weeks and 23 in four weeks followed by the Adirondack Marathon as a good hilly trainer. Then three weeks after Adirondack I'm doing the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon which comes six weeks before Philly. Between Mohawk Hudson and Philly I'll probably do a 20 or 22 miler mostly at MP to stay sharp. So that adds up to five twenty milers in thirteen weeks which is probably one or two more than most people need but I really want to PR at Philly.

Re: Philly Marathon - November 19, 2006
I have no idea how many 20 milers I'll run before Philly, probably 2 or 3. (sorry, kind of inside joke.)

I've now let the cat out of the bag that what I'm shooting for is a JFK-Philly double, and just maybe a Richmond-OBX-JFK-Philly Double-double. That's Maniac-speak for "pointless self-abuse." And admittedly I won't be setting PRs anywhere.

I'm doing a bit like what Dr Wu is doing, using a succession of races to prepare. The end of Aug I'll do my first (easy) 50M on 5 days rest after Pikes Peak. Then on Oct 7 a 50K-marathon double the week after Portland. We'll see if I make it through any of that injury-free. My "base" is the races I've run so far this year: six marathons and a 50K since April 17.

But one way or another, I WILL be at Philly. Hope to see lots of coolrunners there.

Re: Philly Marathon - November 19, 2006
Kimmie -- what did you end up doing for your long run? 20 would be overdoing it for Philly or MCM, in my opinion, unless your group is not a novice group.

Hippo -- I should be at OBX (I want to run my last long run miles in the Half, but don't trust myself to keep it easy, so I'll volunteer/spectate) as well as Philly.

3 weeks down for me -- 15 to go! The past week and a half, my right leg has been bothering me. The quad started talking to me during an interval workout, and that somehow migrated to a lot of hamstring tightness this week. It seems to be subsiding now. I've got a massage tomorrow and my coach is having me do a slight step-back in mileage this week coming up with no speedwork, which we hope will calm it down.

I'm concerned I wasn't cut out for speed training, but maybe it's just that I went from none during base building to weekly Tempo or Interval workouts.

How's everyone else doing?

Re: Philly Marathon - November 19, 2006
Had my longest run in months yesterday at ~10 miles. Felt great to finally get some decent mileage back under my belt. I definintely cleared a mental hurdle and hope to start bumping up mileage regularly now.

Re: Philly Marathon - November 19, 2006
I just reserved three nights at the Sheraton, Nov 17, 18, 19. It's the host hotel and they have a discount rate for runners. It's still going to be expensive though, because they charge extra for parking and internet access. But I stayed there once before on business and it's quiet, secure and they have awesome beds.

I ran a 17 mile progression run last Sunday and felt good. Doing 20 in two weeks, 23 or 24 in four weeks, then the Adirondack Marathon two weeks later. After that, the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon three weeks after 'Dack. I think I'll be ready to burn up Philly!

(Sorry if I'm repeating myself)
