NJ on Saturday. I thought a HM with Dean was a great way to taper.

Oh yeah. I think Philly is full mary only. I am still waiting to hear from them about what the real pace is gonna be since i have seen conflicting things on the internet. I don't want to get lost in their dust!

Re: Philly Marathon - November 19, 2006
I'm getting pretty pumped for Philly as well. My last long run will be next weekend on the 28th. Probably do 20, maybe a little more. I've done a 21, 26.2, and a 21 so far. I felt like a slacker when I only did 21 this past weekend.

Now if I can jettison some friggin tonnage, I might be able to break 4 hours.

Re: Philly Marathon - November 19, 2006
wow! seven pages of posts! I would sort through them to see if this has already been discussed- but i don't have the time!

I just ran the Baltimore marathon & am thinking about the Philly marathon in a few weeks (I'm actually moving from Baltimore to Philly on 11/4). Is anybody else planning on doing this combo, or is there anyone else who has before?

B-more was Sunday and today I did my first light running. Felt ok- I just don't want to overdo it.

Kimmie-
I am considering running with the 3:50 or 4:00 group from the start, and try to catch the 3:40's later too. My PR is 3:53- looks like I will probably see ya on the course!

Re: Philly Marathon - November 19, 2006
4 weeks to go!!

One more week of peak training for me, capped off with a 22 mile long run. I'm a little nervous about fitting it in in a travel weekend, but will juggle it into my Friday the best I can. I would really like to finish on a positive note before tapering. Training has gone really well so far -- I've had some less than stellar-feeling runs, but have been consistent, relatively injury-free (knock wood), and not missed a workout.

Yesterday I had a great 20-miler with a running buddy that has me more excited for Philly than last weekend's tune-up half where I was just 2 seconds off my PR, but felt lousy. We held a sub 9:00 min/mile pace talking comfortably the whole way and cranked it up the last 2 miles, finishing with an 8:10 min/mile.

I'm also looking at the pace groups, like some of you, but am still not decided on a race goal. I know I'd love to come in under 4:00 but am not sure yet about if I want to just go for my dream goal or play it safe and shoot for just under 4:00. It could be an ugly "crash and burn" situation or it could be a "shoot for the moon and at least you'll land on a star" result.

I've learned a big racing problem for me is getting enough liquids in on the course but maintaining as much pace as I can while doing so. Anyone have any good strategies?

Does anyone else find themselves thinking about the race all the time?

Re: Philly Marathon - November 19, 2006
I am also obsessing about a goal. I have never run a November marathon before, and am a little worried about it being too cold. But I am determined not to overdress. I am thinking shorts and a tank with a hat and gloves, as long as it's above 40. Anyone have other ideas about what to wear? I'm from Pittsburgh and already think its chilly here!

Sistergoldenhair- when I achieved my current PR I was trying for 3:40 (my dream goal) but landed on the "star" of 3:53. I have to say I wasn't too dissapointed because it was my first sub-4 finish, and there is something exciting about seeing the number 3 on that finish line clock! Realistically I'll probably run about my PR in Philly. Good luck to everyone with their goals! Seems like a lot of you run about my pace.

We have the same dream goal (at least until I turn 35 in April). And of course in just my 3rd marathon and considering my current PR I would be thrilled to see a 3-anything! Just out of curiosity, what is giving you that idea of what you'll do in Philly? Your training?

Cold weather races are my preference, and unless it's unseasonably cold I'm either going to wear RaceReady shorts or capri tights w/pockets and a short-sleeved T/tank under something ditch-able (along with ditchable headband/gloves). I will freeze at the start but feel great once I get going.

Re: Philly Marathon - November 19, 2006
15 hilly miles today at an EZ 8:58 pace. I'm having trouble staying motivated for Philly after my unexpected marathon PR two weeks ago. With two marathons in the last five weeks I really don't need to worry about mileage but plan to do around 52 - 55 in the upcoming week with a fast 20 - 22 next Sunday. That will be my sixth 20 miler this summer/fall. Also planned are 4 X 1600 intervals on Wednesday nights for the next two weeks and hopefully about five more pounds of weight loss.

SGH- i always go to Walmart or salvation army and buy a throw away sweatshirt and leave it at an early aide station.

Re: Philly Marathon - November 19, 2006
SGH- I am pretty sure about my finish time because this will be my 5th marathon this year and all have been between 3:53 and under 4. I am really in a rut. My last race was Erie on Sept 10th in 3:56, and my training hasnt really changed, nor do I believe that one can gain much fitness on 2 month's time. I'll be taking a different approach to my training this winter in preparation for a 3:40 attempt early this spring. However, my plan for Philly is to go out real slow and try to turn it on at the end!

MARTICIOUS- thanks for the advice on clothes. I will probably go with a runner's cap and throw away gloves.

ALL- Anyone have any logistical advice re: the start- how early to get there to have time to pee and line up with the 4:00 pace group? Most of my past marathons have been small low key races. I am very excited about running this one since it will be the biggest field I have experienced, but I know that means everything will be more hectic. I already plan to carry a small water bottle so I can skip the infamous first water station. Any other advice from past Philly finishers would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Philly Marathon - November 19, 2006
The course map for the half marathon is up on the marathon website. Looks as though the half runners start with the marathon and share the course for the first 9 miles or so. Personally I was looking forward to the fact that Philly is a much smaller race than NYC or Chicago. I really hope they get more port-potties this year, because with the extra runners starting at the same time, the long lines from previous years will be even worse.

Re: Philly Marathon - November 19, 2006
This will be my first time running the Philly marathon. I have run the past two NYC marathons. I am looking to qualify for Boston this year (less than 3:10).

Does anyone have advice regarding whether or not I should join the 3:10 pace group? I finished my last half marathon in just under 1:23. On one hand I am nervous that I will start out too fast and crash in the later miles. On the other hand, I don't want to just miss qualifying for Boston because I paced myself too slow.

Re: Philly Marathon - November 19, 2006
Q46, assuming you have done some long runs, a 3:10 shouldn't be a problem based on your half time. If you're worried about going out too fast, the pace group is a good thing for you. The pace groups actually run a pace a few minutes under their time to leave some room for error. How about running with them for the first 16-20 miles, then if you feel good, you can move ahead?
