Doctor Wu, I thought you said your goal was to pace me to a 3:40:59.

Re: Philly Marathon - November 19, 2006
Did my last long run today, 20 miles in 2:50. After today, now rethinking my goal to a possible 3:40/3:45. But I'm afraid of going out too fast & then totally crashing..... Regardless, still getting excited now that my last long run is in the books!

Re: Philly Marathon - November 19, 2006
What do you all think about a two week taper? I didn't get a last long one in last weekend- I had to cut it short because of time. I ran 16 instead of the 20 I had planned. So, I could run 20 this sat. and then still have two weeks to taper? What are your thoughts? I've run 2- 20 milers this training.

I am always very pro 3 week taper, but for work related issues and what not i am doing a 2 week taper for JFK50 (the day prior to Philly). I would just take it super duper easy for the two weeks. Hopefully two weeks is sufficient! I'll let ya know.

How many 20's did you get in? Regardless, I'm of the opinion that "20" is simply a nice round number and 18 (or 16 in your case) can be just as effective.

Re: Philly Marathon - November 19, 2006
I'll chime in here too.

No requirement for taper is cast in stone. You don't HAVE to have any taper at all, it's just something that a lot of people find valuable. Questions to ask yourself:

How tired are you from training? Are a lot of things sore? Do you feel overly tired from running?

How much are you focussed on a time goal? A good taper will make you faster.

Have you run marathons before? Experience will help you decide on the tradeoffs.

Is the marathon and end goal or just a big day on the way to more stuff? A full taper, hard marathon, full recovery is a tremendous interruption to training momentum. Less taper, slower marathon, shorter recovery is arguably LESS hard on you.

Re: Philly Marathon - November 19, 2006
I've run 3 marathons and always done a three week taper but this time my training has been weak. I've only done 2- 20 milers. I don't feel really sore from training but I'm having some issues with my achilles tendon which is one reason why my overall mileage has been low. I guess I just have to resist the urge to cram. I'm wondering if the mental boost from doing another 20 miler will be worth the physical cost. I've always heard that it's better to be undertrained than overtrained. I do have a time goal this one- 3:45, which is BQ for me and extremely aggressive.

I'll have to decide soon.

Re: Philly Marathon - November 19, 2006
I think I recently read somewhere that the benefits of a 20 miler are not realized until 3 weeks later. (Anyone else see that?). At this point, wouldn't cram one in.

It's better to be undertrained during the taper phase but overtrained for everything that comes before the taper.

Ran 13.1 (of NJ's 26.2) with Dean K. today. Finish time was 2:05 but they were definintely not even splits. It was an absolute blast and made me want to run Philly tomorrow!

How's everyone's taper going?

Good. Did my last double digit-run yesterday (12 miles). I'm doing just the opposite of most marathoners and I'm trying to drop a lot of weight before the race. I was 220 last weekend. I am 212 this weekend. I want to be below 205 for the race.

That's awesome! They moved the Philly time from 8am to 10am and there was no way i could get back to work on time (i am an hour away) boohoo.

Re: Philly Marathon - November 19, 2006
I am obsessing about which pacing group to run with: now it's between 3:50 and 4:00. My race times are SO different from training runs. What's up wtih that? Am I just one of those people that pull something out on race day that I can't imitate during training? i am getting excited, though. Anyone else plan on driving the course the day before? I think that will give me a good feel for it.

AHHH!!!

Re: Philly Marathon - November 19, 2006
I'm getting nerves.

The tri-cities marathon last Sunday absolutely trashed my Vastus Medialis on one side. A huge quartering headwind during the last 8 miles had everyone leaning about 30 degrees to the left and the result was a bit like running uphill on a steeply crowned road. I've just been giving it 100% rest and contrast baths in hopes it will recover by Richmond on Saturday the 11th.

I had been thinking about a fastest-time-for-2006 effort at Richmond prior to two slower efforts on Philly weekend. Now I'm thinking maybe 3:45 at Richmond.

Sorry to be talking about other marathons: I've got that tendency to think about marathon streaks. Just finishing Philly is the climax of this streak for me, and this streak is slightly harder than one I did a month ago, and really the biggest thing for me in 2006. Last streak: Portland (Oct1), Baker Lake 50K (Oct7), Victoria (Oct 8); this streak: Richmond (Nov11), JFK 50M (Nov18), Philly(Nov19), Seattle(Nov26).
