Hey y'all. Just curious what kind of training schedule is everyone doing? Along with the help and knowledge of people who run alot more than I do, I made up my own schedule to deal with the stupidity of running the Goofy. It starts September 4th, and the first week is 30mpw, with the long run at 9 miles.

I am following the Hal Higdon's novice program. I am running a half marathon on Sept 30th and then will continue my training from that point.

Re: Disney World Marathon 2007
I completed the Goofy Race and a Half Challenge in January on a relatively low mileage plan. Because of a busy schedule I could only do 4 runs a week normally, but I focused my efforts on doing progressively long runs on Saturdays with a run of roughly half that distance on the following day. I worked this up to 20 miler on Saturday with a 10 miler on Sunday and did this 3 weeks and then tapered. My total weekly mileage at the peak was only around 40 miles. I met my goals in the races of 2 hours in the half and just under 5 hours in the full. My PR for the distances is 1:40 half and 4:01 in the full, so I was conservative in my goals since I'd never attempted anything like the double before. I plan the same approach this year only hope to insert some speedwork into the mix to improve my times. I finished both races in surprisingly good shape (relatively speaking). I bonked at 20 miles in the full, but had expected it sooner. I admit that I was taking short walk breaks at the water stops too even though I hadn't trained doing them.

P.S. It was VERY COLD out there! The year before though it was way too hot, so like others have said take a bit of everything and layer if you need to.

Good luck!
Jim

Question for the 20065 Goofy people...

When did you get your Goofy medal? Cuz I guess they have to prove you did the half in order to give you the Goofy at the finish of the full, and I just can't fathom how they accomplish that.

Im guessing they'd have to send it, right?

Snooze. you get your medals at the end of your races; your Donald at the end of your half, your Mickey at the end of your full and the Goofy in a special tent just past your Mickey. When you register at the Expo they put on a special bracelet for Goofy participants. When you finish the half you go to a special tent and have the original bracelet removed and they give you a second bracelet for the full. When you finish the full you go to a special tent and have to have the second bracelet on in order to recieve your Goofy.

For those participating in the Goofy, they take your picture outside the special tent after you have recieved your Goofy medal....make sure you pack your Donald medal in your pick up bag so you will have all three medals to show off in your picture. I did last year and everyone wanted to borrow my Donald so they could get all three medals in their picture....this year I'll be charging $1.00 for the use of my medal....

Good running all.

Re: Disney World Marathon 2007
I am running the Disney marathon and it will be my first one ever. I am a little nervous so I tend to stick to the "rules" when it comes to doing something for the first time.
My question for anybody that has run this race before has to do with MP3 players. I see on the Disney website they say no headphones for safety reasons, but I was wondering if that is one of those rules that is not really enforced or what?
If any one has any feedback it would be much appreciated.

Re: Disney World Marathon 2007
Charleston,
I love running with my tunes in training and have even used it for some races. You won't get pulled out by the RD or anything like that - just keep the volume at a reasonable level so you are aware of what's going on around you, particularly in the beginning when it's crowded.

Sign up with one of the pace groups as well - it's more fun to run with other folks as you can distract yourself for a few miles at a time by talking with others.

Pacer and Snooze>
Thank you guys for your input. I like the idea of listening to the crowd cheer you on. That will definitely be motivation enough for me!

Hey Snooze T.

My training is going well, though I've has a few weeks of less mileage than plan (Pfitz 18/70) due to vacations, etc. But I feel in good shape and will kick it in this week and next.

Bill

PS: the WDW Full is 95% full as of this post.

My training is going well for the 1/2..running the Baltimore Half in October..that'll help keep me where I want to be for January. I'll have the base mileage down, no problem. I think between October and January I'll incorporate more hill and speed workouts as well.

Training is going pretty well. Got the base training down and ramping up the mileage a bit and adding some speedwork. Ran the Maui Half Marathon last week and had a blast.
