Hey Kate - I live in Norwalk also, for all we know we've probably passed eachother a million times. NYC was my first marathon in 2004 and it's going to a blast! Let me know if you ever want to swap good training routes.

Re: NYC Marathon - Nov. 5, 2006
JohnInNYC or anyone else in the know... is the approach to the Queensboro Bridge on the Manhattan side off Second Avenue? I'd like to do some training runs similar to those John mentioned earlier in this thread, running back and forth over the bridge a few times. I can picture the exit into Manhattan for cars but not for the running/walking path.

Thanks!

For what its worth; you woould be waaaayyyy better off doing hill repeats in norther CP where the grade is more intense. Just do a lotta reps.

I agree your making the bridge a big deal, it's not. Run harlem hill a few times a week. You'll be ready.

Re: NYC Marathon - Nov. 5, 2006
Hi all...my first post on this topic...and it's going to be "interesting"....

I am bigtime afraid of heights but I force myself to plod through things. I thought I could do the bridge at the start because I'm small, it'll be crowded and if I stick to the middle maybe I would feel kind of "protected" by everyone around me.......

Then I read this:
"Running onto the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, I can hear a delighted, surprised whoop up ahead, and it moves backwards through the crowd towards me at the same speed we are running. Suddenly I step onto the bridge and start whooping myself - the bridge is bouncing up and down beneath our feet, it feels like we're running on a trampoline or a huge, molasses-filled waterbed. Turns out these suspension bridges really are just dangling there. "

How can I prepare for this???? Rhetorical...I know I can't really "prepare"...But can anyone offer some experience, advice...anything....I am NOT a quitter

Re: NYC Marathon - Nov. 5, 2006
Thanks paulmitch & webfoot --- running the bridge is more to just get used to it and expect it at miles 15-16, etc. where I tend to start hurdling mental challenges in a run. Running the hills in the north of CP and along northern Riverside Drive too are part of my regular regime --- not my favorite part, but there nonetheless. ha ha.. Thanks for the info!

Re: NYC Marathon - Nov. 5, 2006
Hi guys,
How are you all doing? I too have just added Riverside Park to my training runs and those hills are really adding a challenge for me. Training along the West Side Highway and Hudson River Park, I have avoided a lot of hills, but I know it's time so I have been adding them slowly. We drove out to Coney Island last Saturday and passing the Verrazano I started getting so excited. I'm a little worried about miles 16-20 too...I think that might be a tough stretch for me mentally...maybe running parts of the course ahead of time would help me. That's a great idea...
Happy running...

Re: NYC Marathon - Nov. 5, 2006
I ran the Queensboro Bridge over & back tonight and found it to be not as big of a challenge as I previously thought. It's certainly a long & gradual climb but now that I've done it, the visual of today will help me tremendously when those miles come along the marathon route. Thanks for the idea John.

Good runs to all!

Re: NYC Marathon - Nov. 5, 2006
Sometime in October we will be doing the last 10 miles of the Nyc marathon. It is usually done with a local NY club. If anyone John, or running in NYC wants to join me, then feel free. It's a perfect way to get to know the last 10 miles before you run it for real.

Would LOVE to join in on that! Let me know when it's getting close & I'll run it too. Thanks!

I was planning on using the ferry to get the start. What does it mean by Advance signup??

quote:
Originally posted by GreenMan:
I think there are two things there that got mixed together: The bus to the start that leaves from the ferry terminal, and the ferry itself. You have to sign up in advance for the bus, but for the ferry you just show up.

I have the same confusion as dcv2002, but GreenMan's answer doesn't clear it up for me.

quote:
Here's what the NYC Marathon website says:
Free shuttle buses will transport runners from the St. George Ferry Terminal, Staten Island, to Fort Wadsworth, 6:00-8:15 a.m. The ferry ride from Manhattan is also free. The Staten Island Ferry schedule for race day will be posted at a later date.

But now that I have my handbook, it says "Advanced sign up is required for the bus from the ferry terminal to the start."

Which leaves me with three questions:
(1) Does that cost anything?
and
(2) How do I do it? I went to my profile and while I can sign up for the buses from other locations (for a price), there's no option offered for signing up for a bus from St. George's. The handbook says send an e-mail to marathonmailer@nyrr.org--anyone else done this?
(3) Anyone know if Staten Island Rapid Transit can get me to within striking distance of Ft. Wadsworth?

Re: NYC Marathon - Nov. 5, 2006
OK, there you are in Lower Manhattan, at the Staten Island Ferry terminal, on race morning. You see the ferry itself, and you see a loonnnng line of buses. If you look down at your race bib and see a sticker that says you paid $15 or so for the bus ride, you can get on a bus and ride all the way to the start. (Presumably you'll remember paying the $15, probably at the expo if you didn't do it when you signed up.) Otherwise, your only option is to get on the ferry, ride it to Staten Island, and take the free shuttle from there, no signup required.
