Lost Dutchman 2007 (Arizona)

Has anyone run this before? I am planning on this being my 2nd marathon. Anyone else doing this next year?

I've done it twice. It is a rolling course... the first 6ish miles are a downhill - makes it very easy to go out too fast. Very nasty but mercifully short hill in the later miles called 'dutchman's revenge'. You'll know it when you get there.

If you can manage getting up in the middle of the night, catch the earliest shuttle to the top and maximize your time at the little campfires. It's nice.

And the sun coming up is very cool.

Good support along the way; nice gathering at the end. Lots of drawings for prizes. Alas, some prizes are more meaningful if you are from the area... but that's pretty typical...

I may do it next year, but not likely. Other good stuff that weekend.

Its a toss up for me between running PF Changs HM or the LD HM. Only drawbacks about the LD is that its on the other side of the Valley for me, and its that much closer to the Flying Pig HM that I am running in May. They say its a very beautiful course and lots of fun. Decisions. decisions.

I'm hoping to do the HM. It would be my first HM. I've heard it's very scenic. I'm from the West Valley, so I will have to get up very early, but that adds to the excitement.

Re: Lost Dutchman 2007 (Arizona)
Ah... so the half is an out-and-back from the finish, whereas the full is a point-to-point from wayout to the finish. The half is pretty, but the full is jaw-dropping gorgeous because it starts in the hills. No idea whether they do the same little campfire thing for the start of the half.

I do know this when choosing between LD and PF Chang. The PF Chang half course is one of the fastest in the country (not counting full-on downhill screamers). The LD course is fairly hard. If you want great desert sites, do LD. If you want a nice challenge, do LD. If you are trying to PR then by all means do PF Chang.

Hey Salty Love your signature, I had that movie permanantely burned into my memory thanks to my kids Judging by your profile, you and I are darn near neighbors, I live in Surprise.

SR Good to see you around again! Maybe someday I will get around to running another full and Ill do the LD. Think I may do PF Changs HM just from the recovery standpoint, plus some of my local friends are running it.

Re: Lost Dutchman 2007 (Arizona)
I have the half at the Lost Dutchman on my race calendar, although I may opt for the Palm Springs Half on that date because of travelling distance.

The Lost Dutchman looks like a beautiful race..... all I have to do is talk my non-running DW into another race/vacation ..... after last weekend's trip to Santa Barabara, she may be reaching her limit

I would like to hear more from others that have run this race.

Thanks,
Jim

Not at all... this could be very useful. Many marathon training plans include races of shorter distances along the way. Just listen to your body... if you feel especially ragged after the half, then take it easy for a few days.

And keep in mind that Lost Dutchman and the RockNRoll races are night and day in terms of attitude and organization. Both are fun. Just very very different.

Hi

Frankie,
I live right on the edge of Surprise. I usually tell people I live in Surprise, since even locals don't always know where El Mirage is. Are you doing any other runs in the area? I'm planning to do the Turkey Trot in Peoria.

Kinda funny you mention that some folks dont know where El Mirage is. When I tell out of state people that I live in Surprise, AZ, they look at me as if to say ok where in Arizona, and why is it a surprise

I am running the Turkey Trot in Peoria too, the 8k. Itll be the first running race that I have run twice ( as I only started ruinning a little over a year ago. ) Hope to beat my time from last year. Maybe we could meet up before and at least say hello.

Frankie

Frankie,

That would be great to meet at Peoria. I'm doing the 8k also, but I walk a good amount of it. Maybe we figure out a meeting place.

Sandert,

I like the name of Why also. I lived in Ohio for a while, and liked the towns of Defiance and Payne. I actually worked in Defiance, which was always fun to tell people.
