Yuengling Shamrock Marathon anyone?

March 17 and 18th down at Virginia beach. Never ran this one before. Pointers? Suggestions?

Thanks
Karen

I've not done it before (I'm sure srlopez has!) but I've heard it's flat & fast and well-run. I'd love to do it, particularly now that Yuengling is the sponsor! Best American beer in my humble opinion.

Re: Yuengling Shamrock Marathon anyone?
I plan on running it this year, but I have not ran this race to date. It's gonna be a special race for me as I turn 21 on the marathon and will run it to be my first. From what the Web page said, the course is flat and fast, but with some of the comments from Marathonguide.com, wind is an issue.

Re: Yuengling Shamrock Marathon anyone?
I ran it last year and it's a great race. Flat and fast and a nice course. The organizers do a good job there too. Well organized and nice people. Last year we were getting there late on Friday and would miss the expo in order to pick up my son's package for the 8K on Saturday (marathon's on Sunday) and I got in touch with one of the organizers and they delivered his stuff to the hotel. The only thing that threw me somewhat last year was the mile marker signs. They're kind of small and I missed the first one and kept thinking, boy this is a long mile. Once I got to mile 2 I figured out what to look for. The weather can also be somewhat breezy since you are at the beach but nothing you can do about that. You'll like this race.

Re: Yuengling Shamrock Marathon anyone?
I have run it the past two years in a row. An excellent course and fast. This year I plan on doing the 8K and the marathon. I would recommend it to anyone. It is a flat course, especially if the run the same route they did last year. It has two little hills on the course (a bridge you cross twice). Two years ago they had a short hill 1/4 mile or so that was pretty steep at mile 17 or 18. But other than that it is a flat course.

Re: Yuengling Shamrock Marathon anyone?
I loved the Half last year and am planning to run the full marathon this time. I am hoping to BQ if all goes well with training & conditions. Wish me luck!

The Half course could not have been flatter and last year was a tad bit cool, but otherwise perfect. Everyone I knew who ran had a great race that day. The whole weekend is superbly organized and a lot of fun. The post-race refreshments included beer, Irish Stew and cookies in addition to the usual bagels, pretzels, etc.

For those in the area, the Tidewater Striders running club has a great 3 race tune-up series so you don't have to do all those winter long runs all alone.

After running Richmond this past November and getting a dose of Southern hospitality, this Yankee has just paid for Shamrock. It will be my 7th marathon since May 2005, and Im hoping a flat course(like my local one in Erie,PA) will result in another PR. Peace, Robert

Re: Yuengling Shamrock Marathon anyone?
I can't believe I am back here posting again but I couldn't be more happy to be running in the same race with SGH!!! Can you believe this is my first marathon since MCM where you ran with me? Of course, having a baby in between didn't help my marathon training much.

I ran 17 last weekend and it about killed me. My training for this marathon has been much harder due to my added "child responsibilities" and my DH's new work schedule (leave before the sun comes up, arrive home after the sun goes down). Anyway, instead of my scheduled 13 for this week I'm going to do 19 because it's supposed to be 70 degrees this weekend. Wish me luck!

Re: Yuengling Shamrock Marathon anyone?
Hi DCDiva!

How's everyone's training going?

I'm a bit disappointed because they posted this year's pace groups and there's no 3:45. I don't get it -- it's a BQ time for a pretty big women's age group. Yet there is a 7:00 pace group? Nothing against walkers ... but they are not trying to qualify for anything.

I had really, really been hoping for a pace group this go-round. I know it would help especially at the end. So -- anyone out there looking to try for 3:45 at Shamrock?

Yeah you are right-I checked the website:

http://www.shamrockmarathon.com/pacers.php[/URL" target="_blank">

Perhaps its not to late to email the race directors and see if they would add a 3:45 pace group(or replace the 3:40 group with it).

As Im an old guy (50), Im going out with the 4:15 group.......Run Well, Robert

Yeah! I also am registered for the marathon run. This will be my third marathon, and I'm very excited for the flat course.

I completed an 18 mile run this weekend...in the snow!! How is everyone's training going? Have you had nice weather?

Re: Yuengling Shamrock Marathon anyone?
New poster to the board....

The Shamrock will be my first marathon as well. I ran the Rock-n-Roll 1/2 in Va Beach before so I know some of the course. My longest training run to date is 16 and I hope to finish the marathon in 3:50 or so.

Here's to a cool, non-windy March 18th!!!!

Re: Yuengling Shamrock Marathon anyone?
I'll be there! My body is ready to go after the goofy challenge....I just have to keep this fitness up somehow. My girlfriend will be running the half marathon which will be fun. Anyone have any suggestions of where to stay?
