Re: Yuengling Shamrock Marathon anyone?
SGH and Wings - I hope you guys are feeling better. That stomach flu can really screw things up with your training!

I need a good kick in the butt over here! I just can't get my miles in during the week. I'm getting my long runs in (with the exception of last week) so I guess I'll be okay for the marathon. As I've mentioned before I'm in the "hope I finish" category anyway so I guess if my long runs are obtainable then I should be okay.

Question: What is the longest run on your schedule? When I trained for MCM I ran a 24 miler but this training schedule only takes me to 20. I was thinking about going ahead with the 24 miler anyway. A long-time marathoner friend of mine said in my current position he wouldn't run a 24-miler. If I do he said to split up the run in one day. Maybe run 18 in the morning and the rest in the evening. I don't know about you guys but if I run 18 miles in the morning I am in NO SHAPE to run even 1 mile in the evening!

Comments???

Re: Yuengling Shamrock Marathon anyone?
Well, add me to the list of one who runs with the flu LOL-ran only 17.1 today instead of the scheduled 19. But, as I was loaded up with orange juice and lots of drugs/tylenol, it felt pretty nice(temp was in high teens, yet there was no wind). 21 is on tap for next Sat, which is usually my longest pre-marathon distance..........Run Well All.........

Re: Yuengling Shamrock Marathon anyone?
^^ I ended up missing 2 runs due to the stomach virus. My 13 miler over the weekend ended up great - I am glad I waited until then to start back. The temperature wasn't so bad (around 40 degrees or so) but the wind was horrible. Steady 15 mph with gusts of up to 30 mph! I hope the wind is not too bad for the race.....

I plan on doing 22 this weekend and then I will start tapering!

To answer your question above, my longest run will be the 22 this weekend. The plan I am following called for two 20 milers. However, I feel like getting just a couple of miles closer to the 26.2 distance will give me a little more confidence come race day. But, this is my first marathon so what do I know!!!!

Actually you just may know alot more than you realize! Before I ran my first of 6 marathons 21 mos ago, a co-worker advised me to do a 22 miler, which I did 3 weeks before the big race. It was the BEST advice I ever got vis-a-vis marathoning. I remember hitting mile 23 of my first marathon and thinking "I got this thing in the bag". Enjoy your 22 miler this weekend.......

Re: Yuengling Shamrock Marathon anyone?
Diva, my longest run this time will be 23 this weekend. Maybe you could split the difference with 22 if it will have you going into the race feeling more prepared? Especially if you aren't getting weekly runs in, that could help you in the final leg of the race.

I would not want to split a long run up like that, either.

After more or less recovering from the flu I did 22 for my long run last weekend, with 7 at goal race pace. It was supposed to be 10, and what can I say? I've had a hard time pushing myself in workouts lately. On almost every hard workout I am struggling with worrying about personal stressors, lack of confidence, why bother, etc. Not fun. With this week being the last before taper, I'm focusing on doing my very best each workout. I need to turn my mental stuff around, and quick!

Happy final hard training week, everyone.

Re: Yuengling Shamrock Marathon anyone?
Hi everyone,

I'll be running my final long run this weekend - 22 miles. I've had success in the past with completing three long runs of 20 miles +. I haven't gone over 23 miles and I've done well in my previous marathons. In my eyes, nothing can prepare you for the last 3 miles of the race. It isn't about training or preparation - it's all about guts. If you've got the guts, you'll get through the race.

Good luck to everyone this weekend! Just a few more weeks until that beach party!

Re: Yuengling Shamrock Marathon anyone?
I'm entered for Shamrock but won't be running.

My training was going great in January, fell apart in February due to other work/life complications. About a week I made the decision to bag it because I didn't see how I could salvage my training plan and be ready by mid-March.

Fall should be a better time for me to take on my next marathon.

Good luck to everyone in the race whether it's the half, full or 8k (or some combination thereof).

Re: Yuengling Shamrock Marathon anyone?
Well, ran my 21.1 miler today, which is my usual longest run before a marathon. It was cold-9 degrees, I was tired and neither Rev. Running Buddy nor I felt like running fast. But hey, I got 'er done..........

Re: Yuengling Shamrock Marathon anyone?
CMJHawk, sorry to hear that, but sounds like a good decision. Let that motivate you for a fall race!

I completed my 23 mile long run today with the last 5 at goal race pace. I was very pleased that it went well. Now, let the Taper Madness start!

Re: Yuengling Shamrock Marathon anyone?
I'm nearly ready. I don't pack in the miles as much as the serious trainers in the marathon, but I usually put my runs on the quality side more than quantity. Let's just say my runs are for my benefit, not to make the distance, but go and have a great time with the minimal pain.

Yeah, my longest run was 12 miles of rolling hills to get training for this race, but I feel very comfortable. Then again, I'm going at about 8:30 pace (comfortable), but I listed myself as 4:00:00 on the Shamrock as to my first Half-Marathon results from last year.

Shockingly, I don't run no more than 23 mpw, when I'm training for marathons/half-marathons. Oh well, I came for a challenge and it will be fun.

Re: Yuengling Shamrock Marathon anyone?
I am quite thankful that the long training runs are over! I ended up doing around 22 miles Saturday and all went well. I had near perfect running weather and felt as if I could have run the additional 4+ miles. It will be nice to "only do 12 miles" next weekend - it still feels weird saying that since I just started running less than a year ago (March 1, 2006)!

I am having trouble concentrating on anything other than this marathon - I wish it would hurry up and get here!

I still haven't figured out where I am staying as of yet. Does anyone have any experience with parking for this race?

Re: Yuengling Shamrock Marathon anyone?
Well, I ended up doing 20 on the DREADMILL!!! I can't believe it! I have never done more than 8 on the dreadmill previously. I felt pretty good after the 20, though.

I'm struggling with my mindset for this race. I really need some last minute good words, you know? With my struggle to get in the weekly miles I'm not feeling very confident but with my pretty good long runs I am feeling confident. I go back & forth all the time playing out the marathon in my mind and wondering how I'll actually do in the end. I guess I'll just have to keep reminding myself that I finished my first marathon even after throwing up NINE TIMES throughout the course! SGH - I'm sure you are thinking "THANK GOD I am faster than Diva so I don't have to deal with that during this race!" hehe!

Hey, are we going to meet up anywhere before the race????

Re: Yuengling Shamrock Marathon anyone?
^ 20 on the treadmill...yikes! My longest treadmill run was 4 way back in November and I hated every minute of it! I've run in 90 degrees, 20 degrees, rain, etc. rather than on the treadmill. It takes a lot of determination to gut out that many miles indoors.

My weekday miles are nothing to brag about either, but my weekend long runs have been great. I would rather have it that way than the reverse. You'll do just fine.

Re: Yuengling Shamrock Marathon anyone?
Wings -- Happy Anniversary to you! Outstanding progress!! Shamrock will be a great celebration. I wish I knew more about parking. There are public lots near the oceanfront and the streets have some parking. I stayed in a hotel last year so it wasn't an issue. Looks like you'll be leaving early to come in, right? You are farther out than I am. (Elizabeth City)

Diva, you crazy treadmill woman. I think I've trudged through 18 on one of those. I should take my own advice on this, but I think the more you go into the race worried about the outcome, the more mental anguish you create for yourself which isn't helpful. We can remind each other to RELAX.

I don't know about meeting up. When would be good? Saturday morning I'm spectating the 8K which my boyfriend is running. I have a running club dinner on Saturday night. I will probably hit the Expo Friday late afternoon, but maybe go back Saturday, too. Sunday assuming we survive post-race is open, as well.

dorf -- lucky for you you've got youth on your side. Be prepared for the going to get tough at some point on the course. Start as slowly as is humanly comfortable for you and just take it really, really nice and easy. Feel like you're out for a very easy jog. Slower than 8:30 even maybe? (That's just my opinion and feel free to ignore it.) But remember you have lots of beer to legally drink at the end; the easier you take it, the more up for celebrating you'll be.
