Re: Grandma's 2007
Running races - Some people love to run lots of them. I don't mind running them without taper - Kindof a training run. If you taper a day - maybe 2 and recover 2 days - it becomes pretty disruptive to training, so once a month is plenty of that kind of racing.

Since I got a late start to training - I'm not really doing another race until Grandmas - I did a 1/2 the second weekend in April. I will pace the 3:10 group at Green Bay - I will try to add 5-6 miles @ MP after that one.

Re: Grandma's 2007
Hey guys, what are we doing halfway down the page again?

Anyway, another week in the bag. Or another week I bagged. Whichever. This time of year is really really really really busy. Got in my tempo (well, that's what I call it) run on thursday 4/26, 10k at about 7:58 pace, or a minute faster than marathon pace. Did some normal runs friday and saturday. Sunday was hectic. Went to a bowling tournament, then the casino. Got home, went on an ambulance run, thought about doing the long run, put it off until monday, got in only 4 miles and decided to get the stats for the bowling banquet done instead. Was up until 4 am on that project.

Monday night was the bowling banquet. I ate too much, decided to put off the long run until tuesday. Tuesday was little league practice, did 40 foot wind sprints for 3 hours, with yelling, decided to put the long run off until wednesday. Good thing since there was an ambualnce run and I didn't get to bed until 3am. Wednesday was chess club. Got done at 5:30, and came down with food poisoning. After I got done throwing up I went to bed and slept for 12 hours.

Thursday was little league practice until 9pm again, and a long run now would interfere with the race on saturday. Friday was a couple of miles and a visit to the chiropractor for some ultra sound (just preventative).

So, Saturday rolls around and it is race day. The Run Around Woman 30k in Longville. I had gotten a total of 3 miles in during the week. Umm, I was tapering, or it was a step back week. It wasn't my fault.

It is cool, cloudy, and windy. Near ideal conditions for us big guys. Everything went very well. 18.6 hilly miles in 2:49 and change, about 9:06 pace. Half marathon in 1:57, nearly 8 minutes faster than any other half this year. 10ks go in 54, 57, and 58. Reasonably strong at the end. 4 minutes ahead of last year, and feeling better than last year.

Hooray. 4 more heavy weeks and then the big day. Good luck, everybody.

Re: Grandma's 2007
We seem to have lost a lot people along the way. **** Rob is on here more than most and he's not even running the the race, just supporting. I'm sitting here early Sunday looking out the window at the black skies and heavy winds. I put water out last night for a 23 miler. Trying to drum up some energy.

Re: Grandma's 2007
Thanks Rob! Made it through a 23 in 2:52 and I wore my racing shoes(Nike Marathoners) with no problems. Only one more 20 on my schedule and a 17 marathon pace run. Everything else looks easy.

Mike good luck at Green Bay. All that talk about the beer and brats really sounded good.

Re: Grandma's 2007
Hey Tuffonfeet - I did a 23 miler Saturday - I was out for a relaxed run and looking for a fast finish - @ 8:00 1st 11.5, then picked it up coming back - finishing 6:09 and 5:49 for the last 2.

Green Bay will be fun - The more fun the more people I get to pace. It will be my last overdistance run before Grandmas - I hope to feel good enough to do 4-5 @ MP as soon as I finish pacing.

Counting Green Bay - I have 4 more 20+ mile runs to go.

Still fat and still 7-10 seconds slower per mile than I would like - enough time to get there, but it will be close.

Hey - Pacer Chris - I will see you at the start and I sure hope not again until the finish line or upstairs @ Grandmas bar / resturant.

In the next few weeks, I will have to except the reality of what ever shape I am going to bein for Grandmas and start formulating a realistic pacing strategy. Sometimes reality blows!

Re: Grandma's 2007
Accept reality? Never! Not even at mile 21.

Monday after Get In Gear, I was sitting down, getting ready to leave work, and I thought to myself, "Wow - I am going to PR at Grandma's this year!" I'm not sure exactly why, maybe it's a lot of little things, but ... I think I might! That's pretty exciting, since I'm running this on straight base and just training through for a fast one this fall. (AKA "a shot to crash and burn this fall." - that's reality.)

Deal. If I see you during the race, I'll poke you in the a$$ with my balloons to get you moving a little faster. If you want more encouragement, buy me a cattle prod and I'll zap you with that sucker if I catch you!

Acceptable places to see you:
The Start Line
Mile 24 - but only if you're running along the course for your cooldown!
Beer Tent
Ice Cream Tent
In the lake (I'm doing that this year for sure - I've skipped it the past 2)

Unfortunately I'm flying out shortly after the race so my daughters can shower me with gifts and adulation on Father's Day, but I will grab a beer after the race!

If you don't think you can -- you won't. If you think you can, you at least have a shot.

Go get em Derek!!!

"If you don't think you can -- you won't. If you think you can, you at least have a shot."

Reality -

This means knowing what shape you are in and what the range of finishing times are possible.

Sure I could go out and run the 1st mile in 5:15 - but it is not in the range of reality so I will kill my chances at a good race.

What I do is train with a goal in mind and then in the last 4 weeks accept what range of shape I am in. My goal was to get to 2:42 shape - At the end of February I was in 2:59 shape. I still have 4 weeks to train, so I am unsure where I will get to. I am currently in 2:47 shape - 2:45 would be a big stretch and 2:47 is not in the bank.

I think if I can get rid of this cold that I have had for 5 weeks - I start antibiotics today - I can maybe take another 5-10 seconds per mile off - But ... The results of 6/4 and 6/6 speed sessions will be my reality check.

If you are in 2:45-2:47 shape and start a 2:36 pace - You are sealing your fate. Although get me to mile 20 and I will force my body to comply the last 6.2 miles - But If I fry myself by 10K like last year - stick a fork in me boys.

I am agrressive with my paces - but you do need to separate fantasy from reality -
