Re: Spirit of St. Louis Marathon
When will it be. I am training for a spring marathon and might want to head down there from the Chicago area. Do you have a group training for the race. What is your pace?

Re: Spirit of St. Louis Marathon
I'm using the half this year as a training run for Cincinnati. It's definately a hilly course. Nothing ridiculously steep, but constantly up and down. It's not the best course to PR on. I read that they're going to bottleneck the start line to help with the congestion for the first half mile.

I plan to run the full. Hope to break 4 hours, so I'm a long way from pro status. Also hoping for a nice cool morning.

In case anyone's interested, there is a great video and map of the St. Louis Marathon course at:

For those of you who live in St. Louis:

What couple of things should I do on Saturday that you think best show off your city? It's been several years since I've been to St. Louis, and want to check out some local flavor, however tourist-y. I plan to pick up the packet, maybe drive the course, see the arch (?) -- but open for suggestions after that. Traveling solo.

And what's your suggestion for a pre-race dinner? (Prefer downtown, something lively, not wedded to any specific cuisine. Please don't force me to the Olive Garden. . .)

Thanks for any input.

Re: Spirit of St. Louis Marathon
Greg- THANKS for posting that! I was pretty clueless about the course, but now I have a much better idea. I hope a lot of spectators come out, though...

From the elevation map at first I was expecting a lot of hills, but the video just looked like rolling inclines/declines. thanks!

St. Louis has one of the best zoos in the country, and it's FREE (except for a small children's section). In the same general area of town (near/in Forest Park) there is a great art museum, science center, and a world-class botanical garden.

Also, one of the most unique "museums" you will see anywhere, is the City Museum in downtown St. Louis:

It's a great place for the entire family and I don't know how to describe it. (Everything there is made out of "junk" and left-over pieces of buildings, machinery, etc.)

For eating, St. Louis is famous for its family-owned italian restaurants in the area of town known as "the hill". Other good areas to find a restaurant would be Laclede's Landing (near downtown on the river), Clayton, and Central West End.

Here are links that will help you pick a place:

Clayton:

Enjoy yourself and have a great race!

Re: Spirit of St. Louis Marathon
I second the vote for eating somewhere at "the hill." Our hotel staff told us about it. We headed over there and found many, many options! We didn't know which to pick, but the one we picked was awesome and dirt cheap! Four of us feasted (huge portions and sides/salads) for about $35 tip and all.

This is where we ate: Amighetti's
5141 Wilson at Marconi 63110 314-776-2855

Here's a listing of other hill restaurants: http://www.diningstl.com/TheHill.htm[/URL" target="_blank">

Thanks for taking the time and for the great suggestions. I'm definitely going to check out the City Museum, and dinner on the hill looks like a great option.

Re: Spirit of St. Louis Marathon
My mom was going to go and to the full marathon alone. Then my dad has decided that he will do some work in St. Louis on Friday and then run the half. With both of them leaving, I'm deciding if I should tag along do the half...

Anybody else run? It was first one so I don't have anything to compare it to. Perfect weather. Had a great time. What did everybody else think.
