Re: the pact
I finally figured out a reasonable training schedule through early next summer. Tentatively, March 12 will be my first trail marathon (Virginia Creeper). That will fit into my training for my first shot at Laurel Highlands 70 miles in early June. Hopefully it all works out better than my past attempts.

happy running,
dan

Re: the pact
For shame! What was this forum doing on page 2??!

Anyway, today I did the 88km ride for Multiple Sclerosis again.

Did it 'alone' for the first time cos my biking mate couldn't make it (ok, so there were another eight to ten thousand people too...)

Gorgeous day, blue sky, sunny, not too warm. Great ride!

My least painful to date, but I'm still hurting...haha

Took me 4:34 from start to end, including one 20-min morning tea break, and two shorter breaks totalling 10 to 15 mins. I'm pretty happy with that!

Yay for me! =)

cheers all..

Re: the pact
so i guess i should post on this thing once in awhile....

I'm doing my first marathon in 2 weeks (philly) and i'm pretty psyched for that. Just coming off of my XC season so i'm in top shape and figured I'd just go for it.

The only thing that's a problem is a lack of long runs. We were doing about 13ish every sunday during the season, and i hammered out a solid 17 a couple weeks ago, but thats about it. I'm sort of doing it with more of a 'survival' mindset than a racing mindset, so we'll see how it turns out.

Re: the pact
kenyan, how did you do at philly?

I'd love to do the creeper marathon in virginia in march, but I'm still working on transportation.

I want to do Laurel Highlands this year, but I'll be doing an internship during that time, so I don't know if that will happen either.

in general, it seems like I'm having some motivation problems lately.

happy and healthy running folks,
Dan

it went pretty well! Finished in 3:28 after running at 7:30 pace through 20 and getting raped by the wall. I'll take it for a first marathon though. Live and learn.

The whole experience was a blast. Cant wait to do another. Hoping to get that darned BQ (<3:10:59) within a few years.

Me & my teammate actually commented at 25 that had it been WS, we'd still have 75 to go..... the thought **** near brought me to my knees.

Re: the pact
nice finish, kevin. yeah, I know what you mean about the distance. I did 27 before, and it was one of the more miserable running experiences. with that said, I'm still looking forward to my first official marathon and first ultra finish.

yep, 2015.. 9 1/2 years away...

I also wanted to mention Yiannis Kouros' Coulac 6 day race finish. There's a thread in the ultra forum, definitely worth a read. I wish I could be doing anything near that at half his age. Just WOW. wow.......

Re: the pact
that guy's unreal. He makes the entire 'who's who' of ultrarunning his personal b!tch.....then runs for 5 more days. (**disturbing images of dean karnazes and pam reed bound by leather fill my mind**)

this just makes my job that much harder 10 years from now. sigh

on another note....i totally realized just now that you and ominousguy were the same person. After i had been wondering what the **** happened to him all this time. Score a big one for me. smacks self

Re: the pact
i cant believe ive been on coolrunning for over 3 years, this thread on the first page the whole time, and ive never joined the bandwagon! i coulda sworn i posted, but i searched the whole thread and for the life of me couldnt find where.

well im joining now. ive always wanted to do a marathon before i turned 20...and if im able to go from never running more than 7 miles at a time to running 26.2 in three years, i should be able to go from 26.2 to 100 in another 7 years. i have a longggggg way to go (duh) but where are you without goals, right? it would be pretty cool to actually meet all of the coolrunning people too. we should get matching t-shirts.

some of you guys are way ahead of me though...tell me, how many hours of training a week do you have to do to be prepared to seriously race 100 mi? and how long would your long runs need to be? that's the only reason i would see me not going through with this (besides forgetting)...not being able to find the time to train for it!

Re: the pact
hours per week for a 100.... probably in the 10-15 hours mark, but when you start to do back to backs on the weekends, that might get closer to 20 hrs/wk. if you do a search for ultra running, you'll find some very useful sites (such as www.ultrunr.com)[/URL" target="_blank"> that can give you more specific info.

as for the salted boiled potato question in the Jay Mountain thread, potatoes are a good source of potassium and carbs, generally easily digested, and salt helps replenlish it since you're probably sweating a lot during a midsummer day's long run.

Re: the pact
I'm looking for a race that's doable logistically for next summer. I can train for something big, but I'll be working full time (weekdays) May and June, so I can't go too far from Pennsylvania. I'd love to do Laurel Highlands, but I honestly don't foresee my training getting that high after working on my muscular imbalances. sigh.......
