Novice


I wanted to find out your opinion on me entering my first Olympic triathlon. I signed up for Walt Disney Triathlon around 5 months ago. I was hoping to have done all of my training as I had planed, but I didn't for different reasons. Right now I can run 4 miles twice or three times per week and I can bike around 20 miles on Saturdays and 10 miles during the weekday. I try to swim two to three times per week and I can swim 1500 meters but I have to rest after the first 300meters every 100 meters for around 20 seconds. Would it be too much for me to enter an Olympic Triathlon on September 23?

I think it's doable but you'll have to really restrain yourself go out slow in each discipline so you have enough to finish. is there a sprint option?

I think if you have to rest that much during a swim in a pool, you will be very challenged to do a 1500 m open water swim. You could probably muddle through the run by walking aportion of it, and could probably complete the bike, but the swim? Sounds doubtful to me. I say skip it this time and do the training for next time.

I think it'd be good training but agree w/ slow n steady above you may have to go slow and take breaks (which are allowed on the swim!) start in the back to the outside and let the crowd get away from you so you can avoid any traffic. if you do it at YOUR pace (no racing allowed keep that ego in check) i think you can finish it and get a good idea what will be like on your "A" race. hope that helps good luck and have fun

In my expert opinion(for swimming only), I have been swimming for over 25 years, a good portion was competitive. I would say to forego this race, you should be able to swim 1500m easy with no breaks and have plenty left over, by plenty I mean, you should feel fresh getting on the bike if you have conditioned well. Joe is right, an open water swim is difficult and chaotic. There is alot more to open water swimming thatn you may think. Please check out some of my replies to older posts regarding this, I put a ton of valuable tips and strategies there. Another question, have you done any brick training(biking then straight into your run), if not be prepared for quite a suprise when you get off your bike. If you still insist on doing this event, then become familiar with the breast stroke as you may need it to get you through the swim, relax in T1 for a few minutes, get your bearings, then be ready for the run, your legs will be like jelly if you haven't conditioned with brick training, it will take you the first mile at least to find your legs, so don't worry, they will arrive. I am sorry if I have scared you off. If you feel confident you can finish the race then take breaks like Joe mentioned. I would like to see that you enjoy the race and not have to panic during the swim which will throw the rest of your day off.

I'd say go for it. If you need to rest in the swim, then do it. Either way I say do it. Get your first one done and out of the way so you can identify what you need to improve for next season and work on that. The only way you lose a tri is if you don't give it a shot, or you don't learn from your mistakes. Who knows you may do better than you think. But be sure you read up on those open water swims. They will give you some insight as to what to expect.

how about tri shorts? they had a small pad for cycling but are suitable for running (which most cycling shorts are not)
