you'd think so what with all of them having biblical names. almost every person i have met from there has a name that is from the bible like, nathan, solomon, thomas, james, to name a few of the names of kenyans i have met.

LOL that was pretty funny tho.

I don't really mind hearing about friends drinking, but with teammates it bothers me. We give up pop and lots of junk food, not to mention our lazy summer mornings, to race at our best but then can't even sacrifice enough to stay sober? It just is a slightly scary contradiction to me. And again, I'm not naive and I know its normal, so don't go thinking I'm some stupid prude, kay?

ok dude... we are just talking bout it now, cuz its the summer and all those sacrices and stuff all starts in the real season, and its pretty much a given that no one drinks during the season, cuz yeah when i hear bout teammates drinking during season, i dont like it as well.

But if you train drunk, you've got to race drunk. it's called state dependent learning.

Re: Alcohol and Running? Does it really affect us?
I saw this topic and began to seriously wonder about it's useful relevance, no, in a good way ! I've often heard that the calories consumed in alcohol are useless to us runners, but are they really? Why don't we include (maybe we do?) moderate alcohol consumption as part of a carbo loading program prior to long runs, say a 1/2 or full Marathon? As I understand it, look at...beer, it's a high carb beverage , or at least it can be if you go for a "full flavored" non-lowcarb one , say a microbrew or a good stout (Guiness for example). If you were to have a couple (try hard now!) every night after your taper runs prior to a race, wouldn't they be beneficial? Isn't a carb, a carb, ? I know you don't want to "over-consume" because of the aformentioned ill after-effects but why not include this technique. Maybe some of you have ideas about this? I'd like to hear your thoughts. Cheers!

why dont you post this in Newbie Cafe, Carbo Canten. Get an adult perspective on this rather then other kids saying its ok, because they are obviously going to say it wont affect you.

Re: Alcohol and Running? Does it really affect us?
Drinking before running is dangerous. It can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) - your body has insufficient glucose (sugar) supplied in your bloodstream because when you drink, even a glass of wine or beer etc., your liver detects the alcohol as a toxin to your body and makes it its number one priority to get rid of it. Your liver secretes glycogen constantly (stored glucose packaged by the liver from the food you eat) constantly. Insulin is constanly secreted to allow the glucose from the blood enter cells. when you drink, your body releases cortisol as an intial reaction to the toxin causing your blood glucose to rise. extra insulin is then secreted, and then your glucose is then at a normal range, but the liver is still detoxifying, so your liver does not secrete the glycogen. your body still secretes insulin making your blood glucose lower. Since your body looses its ability to supply glucose to your body, your performance will be poor because your cells are starving. It is the same thing when long distance runners hit a wall.

Um... NO! and NO!

Eating a bag of candy containing simple carbs will do u nothing before a run

Complex carbs are good

Occassionally drinking? No.

Drinking the night before a run.... just say no.
Dehydration is not fun

I read somewhere that alcohol or liquor is dehydrating.
