do ab workouts. they dont have to be standard crunches--my team does all of these fancy ab things at practice sometimes that would be hard for me to explain in words, but im sure you could find pictures and stuff online. not only will they get rid of your "pudge," but (according to my coach) they'll strengthen your core muscles which will help with your running form and make you run faster, or some bs like that.

Many people think that you will run faster if you are skinnier, but this is not true at all. Of course, you shouldn't have 35% body fat if you want your body to operate at top performance. The ideal fat percentage is between 6 and 14 percent. Fat can hold you back, but it will take more than 16 percent to dramatically affect your running and your speed. For cross country, you need endurance. You need to run long distances for endurance training and intervals for your finishing kick in a race. You also need to do squats once a week for more power and speed. And if you want to burn fat, you should run distance at a slower pace that gets you out of breath, but does not make you strain a lot. When you run fast and hard, your body needs energy fast, so it burns the protiens in your blood for fast energy. But when you run at an easier, less strenuous pace, your body doesn't need the energy as fast, so it gets energy by burning fat.

Stay away from sugar. I gave sugar up for lent this year and lost 10 lbs in two weeks. I was in the middle of track traingin as well, but I had never lost that much wieght durnign a season. Sugar is a simple carbohydrate and it can be turned into fat very easily by your body.

Make sure to eat a balanced diet, but I recommend really eating a lot of vegetables. They don't have many calories, they fill you up, and they're full of nutrients. (Of course carbs are important for runners too. :-) Oh, and try only eating a small amount of junk food (candy, cake, ice cream, fries, whatever it is for you) once a week. It's really annoying at first but you get used to it.
Other than that, just run!
