Yeah I basically think of a fast paced song and try to think about the words and the beat. I also think about what I did before the race, like go over my day thus far and re-think it in the order i did things, it distracts me for a while, and then eventually I end up thinking about running and finishing that particular race
When I'm just on a training run or something, I usually think about my day and other things like that. In a race, I think it's important to concentrate only on the race and what you're doing. It's easy for me to get side-tracked, not pay much attention to my pace, etc., so I try to keep an open mind and just worry about finishing.
When I'm running, I usually, almost always, think about ... running ... about my form, constantly monitoring, feet, soft landing, push off, posture, breathing, arms, attitude, mental state, relaxation, etc. Especially on tempos and intervals (which I do too much I suppose, I hate LSD). Am I alone?

Right now i am going crazy because i start thinking of my vocab words for english during mile repeats! Its horrible obfuscate-supine-caterwaul-liturgey! and those are just the most common ones. someone help me with this problem!!!!!!

When i run during a race i mostly think about trying my hardest and keeping my pace. I also pray alot. During a practice i usually just let my mind wander over the day and think about finishing.
Whenever I'm running alone i think about all the homework i have to do when i get home, whats going to be on tv that night, boys/crushes.. all the normal teenage girl thoughts. but when im running with all my friends we just go crazy and talk about anything. But those long 'anti social jogs' as my friends call them, are great stress relievers for me because the whole time i somehow think about nothing but running...
No use thinking about anything but the run. Push yourself during the training and push yourself during the race.
No use talking or thinking of your day as a lasp in concentraiton and possibly many seconds off your time. Music is good if your listening to it since you throw your own pace off along with the songs pace when your try to replay it in your head.
No use praying during or before a race since god wasn't a runner. If you want to PR its best to be serious during all your runs with the expection of maybe the long run since your just working endurance.

I think about why I'm running and what I'll accomplish when I'm running. Also I think about if there's any cute teenaged guys around! LOL!!
mostly I think about nothing much at all, but sometimes I think about the exact things I don't want to think about, things that just get stuck in your head and keep repeating themselves!
For example once I read this article about this guy who had that 'John Jacob Jinglehimer' song stuck in his head while he was training, I thought 'that would suck', and the very next time I was running that stupid song was stuck in MY head!!!!
I have solved all of the worlds problems several times during my long runs. You know poverty, conflicts, oil prices, etc....I even invented a drug to prevent all of the worlds diseases. The problem is when I stop I forget everything.
pretty much anything and everything. You've got a couple hours to solve the problems of the world so ya may as well put them to use. If all I ever thought about was running I think I'd get bored pretty quickly.
Races are just illusions to me. I try to put myself in the context of some of my best workouts. Thats what I know to be real and what gives me the confidence to be able to mow down the guys in front of me.
